Wyliecat Design Philosophy
Since launching our first Wyliecat, "Mustang Sally", in 1992, the company has steadily grown into what is now a complete family of designs, including the 17, 30, 39, and the 48. All four designs have several common philosophical threads.
While fast, Wyliecats are truly the very easiest boats to sail. No live ballast is required they are the ultimate shorthanded design. Wyliecats use finese not force, with steering and sail handling in any wind or sea. In fact, one rarely uses a winch handle when trimming the sail. The Wyliecat hull forms feature a modest beam, exceptional stability and clean timeless aesthetics. Wyliecats use durable, strong, high-tech core construction in both hull and deck. Of course, the freestanding epoxy carbon braided mast with wishbone boom is a Wyliecats clearest difference. Here is how they function. As the apparent wind increases, the spar bends automatically. More bend happens aloft, allowing the sail to spill wind, thereby postponing reefing to 20 or 25 knots of wind. As the apparent wind decreases, the spar automatically becomes straighter, allowing a full sail with more closed leech. The spar has been designed to bend in concert with the wishbone, sail and hull, so the yacht always has a very gentle weather helm. Even with 40% of her sail reefed en route singlehanded from Hawaii to San Francisco, the Wyliecat 30 clearly demonstrated this. Our fully battened sail has lots of roach which feathers into neutral as the wind builds while going to windward. All the sail is available in a very efficient plan form for light winds and running conditions. In fact, the total area is approximately 135% of the triangle desribed by the luff, leech and foot.
Wyliecats are such a joy to sail and maintain that they are the most consistently sailed boats around.
