Yacht Brokerage and Marine Services

On beautiful Casco Bay, Maine

Introduction and Greeting from Merle Hallett, President
The Hallett family and our staff welcome you to Handy Boat! As a sailing professional, I am driven by a love and enthusiasm for the sport. This enthusiasm is best served through the maintenance of the highest professional standards that reflect the integrity, honor, service and fair dealings of my company.
Looking back over my 34 years as director of Handy Boat, with the help of my family I have tried to keep the fun in sailing. It has been my goal to offer our customers the best in service and the latest in materials and procedures, at the most competitive prices possible.
Handy Boat comprises a fully equipped marine complex, capable of every type of repair and fabrication.
Our brokerage department has one of the few heated indoor showrooms in New England.
We have moorings for 300 with launch service, and winter storage for over 150 vessels.
Hallett Sails, a 5,500 square foot sail loft, has acquired a reputation for advanced racing sails.
The Chandlery stocks every marine need from anti-fouling paint and cordage to the latest in yachting fashions.
Our Sea Grill Restaurant has been voted the best seafood restaurant in the Portland area, and boasts a panoramic view of water and islands.
We are located on beautiful Casco Bay, Maine, well above Portland’s commercial traffic – an aesthetically pleasing destination, and a convenient stopover for those heading Down East .
My family and I look forward to seeing you at Handy’s! As always, if my staff members or I can be of any assistance, please call us.

Multiple Sclerosis Regatta
Twenty-one years ago, a group of dedicated sailors wanted to create a regatta that would support a good cause. Ever since, Merle Hallett of Falmouth's Handy Boat, and Dan Wellehan, of Sebago, Inc., have been the driving forces behind the MS Regatta. Now, the MS Regatta is the largest sailing race in Maine, a GMORA sanctioned scoring event, and the largest charity sailing race in New England.
The event has expanded into a weekend celebrating Portland's waterfront, with lots of land based activities including a benefit auction, the famous tugboat races and other good stuff.
Visit MS Regatta Web Site for pictures, dates & events, race results and information. (There is also a link on our "Interesting Maine Links" page.)

Jennica II

The single sail rig, with wishbone type boom, makes the Nonsuch perhaps the easiest boat to sail ever built. Powerful, lean and fast, the Nonsuch 36 provides blue water capabilities and superb handling characteristics. "Jennica II" won the Cruising Class Falmouth Me. to Yarmouth NS race in 1992. The Nonsuch 36 is aptly described by the builder as "A Greyhound Masquerading as a Catboat". An ocean voyage or an afternoon sail can easily be managed by one or two people from the security of the cockpit.

The layout is compared often with interiors found in boats of forty-five feet -the Nonsuch 36 is a true three cabin arrangement, featuring a special navagation area, an enormous galley, a large head with stall shower and a private owner's cabin with 6 1/2 feet of head room. At base of companionway there is a teak grate with drain and adjacent hanging locker, so wet gear can be stowed without dragging through main salon. The galley is designed to function well both in harbor and offshore - the "U" shape is alligned fore and aft to provide security for the cook on either tack. On demand propane hot water, refrigeration and freezer. Propane cabin heat. The head has a fully enclosed adjoining shower stall with teak sump grating. There is access from both the aft cabin and the main salon. Beautiful satin varnished teak throughout.

The electronics have all been replaced in recent years. Below deck Autohelm 6000 with remote in cockpit and all interfaces installed 2002. A JVC Radar was installed in 2003. Also GPS, VHF marine radio and sailing instruments. Recent main. Liferaft.
