History Kai Mana (ex Flash Gordon2) was built by the Cookson Boat Yard in New Zealand (known for very high quality yachts) out of carbon fiber (construction that lasts) under the architectural design and specifications of Farr Yachts in 12/1994. Her electronics, mast and sails were finished in early 1995, upon which she was campaigned on the world-wide Grand-Prix Circuit. In the Mid 90’s competing at the height of grand-prix racing won the Rolex Cup, 3rd in the Southern Ocean Racing Conference, won the Chicago Nood, won the Chicago-Mackinaw, Second at Kenwood Cup, won the Rolex IMS Championship and won Key West Race Week and was voted 1995 Boat of the Year.
Farr Yachts International reports that Farr Yacht Design #329:
“Is uncompromised with her clean hull shape and deep draft keel. The sail plan is generous, but not excessive, and sports a fractional, four spreader, full race rig. She is designed with high stability and has super efficient, high aspect rudder and keel foils enabling her to generate maximum speed in a variety of wind conditions.”
A True Racing Yacht with a Great Record Becomes a More Versatile
Racer-Cruiser: Flash was re-ballasted by Farr Yacht Design to include a
430 lb heavier keel, and nearly all of the bilge ballast was removed and replaced by a very functional interior that is very high in creature comforts and luxury with long-distance cruising and open water racing in mind. Jim Donovan of JP Donovan Design, Inc built a new carbon topmast that was joined to the aluminum mast by an S glass insert which enabled masthead spinnakers across the wind range. The entire hull was re-fared and redone in a Vivid Red Awlgrip with a Matterhorn White nonskid Awlgrip deck. All of the winches were upgraded and most of the hardware throughout the boat was changed, new/newer instruments, computerized navigation, all safety gear to ISAF category 1 and a complete sail wardrobe was purchased.

Remarks Kai Mana is easily configured into a docile long-distance cruiser to the ports of your dreams!
Offshore there is no substitute for seaworthiness! On that lonely day when you are unfortunate enough to be caught far offshore in a real blow, when the skies are grey, the heavens are pouring rain, the wind is of gale or greater force and the waves resemble small mountains, Kai Mana with her stiff carbon hull and seaworthy design will bring you home safely and no worse for wear.
The marginal righting moment inherent in most cruiser-racer designs (too much furniture-not enough keel) is compensated by decreasing the size of the optimal rig, so the result is an underpowered yacht that plods slowly and rocks and rolls through the swells—And that is supposed to be “Sailing in Comfort?” Sailing performance adds greatly to comfort at sea.
In cruising mode Kai Mana is a gentle, well balanced and a delightful boat that TWO PEOPLE can comfortably sail in near breathless conditions or 40 knots of air. The Quantum Kevlar cruising triradial mainsail only hoists up to the runner hounds (still 45’) and Kai Mana becomes a docile masthead rig. Snug the backstay and tighten the runners to 2.5 metric tons, stow the checkstays and forget your worries. If the wind is light to moderate we use the Quantum 141% #1 and if the wind is heavy we use a Sobstad #5... Off the wind hoist the 3A fractional asymmetrical 1.5 oz spinnaker off the tack line (no pole), and jibe the spinnaker like a big headsail. Two people can easily sail the boat in this configuration. It is faster and more stable and gives a better ride than any cruiser-racer on the planet... For long hauls Kai Mana has an additional drop-in and pre-plumbed 55 gallon auxiliary fuel tank.
Add the ability to make your own freshwater (36 gal per day), the ability to refrigerate fresh and frozen food (so you don’t have to eat freeze-dried food a goat would refuse) and the ability to manufacture your own electricity by solar panels, along with the ability to ride the wind makes distant dreams attainable. Relax and enjoy the creature comforts of Kai Mana—take a fresh water shower, sleep in a queen sized bunk and microwave your meals. Get on the Internet daily, check the weather from anywhere in the world, plan your trips around weather and the exotic ports of call become the relaxing world-wide playground of your dreams.
