Model History
The 34 Convertible was introduced in 1999 as a replacement for the retiring 32 Convertible and is built on what is accentually a stretched version of the earlier hull. However, on deck and in the cabin, significant advances were made in layout and ergonomics. Examples of this include the molded-in stairs to the bridge, expanded bridge deck, larger cockpit, offset cabin berth and separate stall shower. In 2004, Luhrs realigned the model designations and changed the name of the boat to a 33 Convertible. 2005 was the final year of production for this model. During the production run, only minor updates were made to the boat, the most significant being the change in 2002 from the light maple wood interior to the darker cherry interior.
Construction & Design
Luhrs uses tried and true construction techniques. The boats are made with E-glass fiberglass woven roving and polyester resin. The hull is laid up with a solid fiberglass bottom and the hull sides are cored with balsa above the waterline. The superstructure is solid glass with balsa cored decks. The stringer system is made of marine grade plywood and is completely encapsulated in fiberglass. The Luhrs product is designed for offshore use and is heavily built. The hull design features a double chine configuration and single lifting strakes port and starboard. The running gear is a conventional straight shaft design with bronze struts and rudders, Aquamet stainless steel shafts and Nibral (4) blade propellers. (The is no recess or prop tunnel for the propellers)
Vessel Walk Thru
From the cockpit, the cabin is entered on centerline via a sliding door. As you enter the salon, the galley unit is immediately to port with all the necessary amenities. Across on starboard is the electrical panel and storage. Moving forward, the salon has L-shaped settees port and starboard with a movable table between, which has (2) folding leaves and storage inside. A TV is recessed in the forward bulkhead to port while other electronic components are recessed to starboard. The salon also features large fixed pane windows on either side with mini-blinds. Moving forward and down three steps, there is a split head with the WC to starboard and the shower to port. The stateroom is in the bow with an offset double berth on port.
