MAJOR PRICE REDUCTION - OWNER WANTS OUT!
This is a great cruising boat that is ready to go! The Hans Christian 38 is a true cutter rig, with the two stateroom and the sought after pullman berth to port forward. Our Defiance has good electronics and powerful below deck autopilot along with all the comforts of ac/heat, Espar diesel furnace, and 12v refrigeration. A new Solar Stick which incorporates a wind genset PLUS two solar panels properly wired and installed. She also has a watermaker, spares, and everything else that a cruising voyagers would need, except maybe a raft. There is proper ground tackle and a powerful horizontal windlass with saltwater deck washdown, which makes anchoring a breeze. The batteries are large Rolls 8Ds. The 12 volts refrig keeps food and wine chilled. Her interior shows extremely young with absolutely no water damage anywhere, PLUS what’s ever so important on a vessel of this age, ALL thru-hulls and hoses were just recently replaced, fuel/water/and holding tanks are in excellent condition. Chainplates were replaced as was some of her standing rigging. Her bilges are spotless and her exterior work and brightwork are newly conditioned.
The listing broker sailed this beautiful and well cared for, Hans Christian 38 MKII Cutter alone, from her home overlooking Downtown Manhattan to Annapolis, Maryland to be sold. The trip down New Jersey’s Shoreline took less than 24 hours for a 140 mile run. The sail was an easy beam reach in 15 knots for the entire trip. Getting to the ocean entrance to Cape May very early in the morning, she hove too in classic fashion, for several hours to get some much needed rest. Catching the flood through the Canal and up the Delaware Bay and then down the Chesapeake was easy and uneventful; she made it door to door in just under 45 hours. Everything on this boat worked. The sails are still in good workable condition, there were no creaks, no noises except for water flowing pass her powerful hull, the engine worked flawlessly, plus the sight from her helm down her flowing steer to her powerful bow is a sight to behold.
A sailing vessel of this style brings ever so fond memories of what sailing ships should of looked like years ago. I like the Hans Christian series of offshore voyagers. We have sold many; with this offering being one of our best.
Defiance as she’s called is the Hans Christian 38 MkII which dates back to 1978, introduced only two years on from its predecessor, the popular Hans Christian 38 Traditional. They share the same designer and the same Taiwanese boatyard, Shin Fa. To the untrained eye, it’s easy to mistake the two. The 38 MkII continues with the same family looks and configuration; a traditional heavy displacement double-ender, with a springy sheerline, large bowsprit and a cutter rig. However the MkII has some important improvements made to its underbody.
In the interests of more boat speed, the beam was carried further forward and aft, the bottom sections flattened and the turn of the bilge was tightened. The forefoot to the keel was made shallower and the rudder placed further aft.
In addition to the hull changes, to mitigate its predecessor’s tendency for weather helm, the mast was moved 12 inches forward, and to improve light air performance the rig was three feet taller and carried 11% more canvas. The result was a boat that performed substantially better all round, it pointed higher and could move much better in light airs.
Below decks, the 38 MkII can be immediately recognized by her sink which is mounted on an island bench, gone is the U-shaped galley. Another important change worth considering is the placement of the engine to under the companionway stairs.
Defiance is a good boat ready to be a comfortable home and safe powerful world voyager; and is ready now for her next adventure. She’s a wonderful offering. Her Proud Owner wishes to move onto his next adventure and finds no more time to use her. Bring offers. She sits on the hard, near Downtown Annapolis for easy viewing.
