UPDATE 2/2013:
COMPASS ROSE has recently been professionally gone through by her yard and looks great! Two coats of fresh Epifanes on the teak trim, wheelhouse ceiling repainted, cockpit sole re-Awlgriped with non-skid, twin Kahlenberg horns installed - essentially anything that needed tending to was taken care of. All reflective of the fine care this vessel has received by her present owner.

COMPASS ROSE is an outstandingly handsome and top quality Downeast flying bridge cruising yacht. Originally crafted in 1959 she was completely restored and brought into the modern age in the years since 1990. In 1990/91 she (formerly STEPHEN MORGAN) was completely rebuilt by a top Maine yard. The restoration including the cold-molding and epoxying of the hull - this work was performed after the original hull was stripped and repaired anywhere needed and fully refastened with bronze. The cold molding/epoxying consisted of 3 layers of mahogany plywood diagonally laid over the original bronze refastened planking. Mechanical + epoxy fastened. Sheathed with fiberglass and coated with West System. Lastly the entire hull + topsides were painted out with Awlgrip.
In 1992, at the Newport Wooden Boat Show, she won the award for Best High Tech Restoration because of the thoroughness of the restoration and the extremely high quality work done. She has been lovingly maintained ever since and the quality and stability of the work performed has clearly withstood the test of time.
This boat turns heads everywhere she goes and is truly one of the most attractive and unique Downeast Cruisers on the market today.
Among work completed during rebuild or subsequent: new fuel (aluminum), water (stainless) and holding tanks, new marine head, Volvo diesel, new shaft + prop, dripless stuffing box, all wiring and circuit breakers. Propane cabin heater. New floor timbers and sheer clamps with new fiberglass over plywood decks. The cockpit and superstructure were coated with West System. New soundproof engine box and cockpit sole. New bronze portlights w/screens. New teak exterior trim (varnished). New Bomar aluminum cockpit hatches (two). Custom radar mast. Custom bronze stanchions and all heavy duty bronze hardware. Hydroslave power steering. Laminated glass wheelhouse windows with one DIamond Glaze in center. New flybridge bench seating. In 2008 + 2009 she got all new electronics as well as AGM batteries. In 2009 the topsides received fresh Awlgrip and the engine was removed to allow for a thorough overall of any component that needed it.
She will sleep four to five comfortably with upper + lower v-berths forward and a filler for the lower ones. The dinette converts to a double berth as well if additional accomodations are needed.
COMPASS ROSE is a rare and wonderful combination of timeless lines and the fine handling characteristics of a true downeast boat - and also the ease of maintenance and reliability of modern technology. She was built as a yacht and retains the original interior with some upgrades of course. She is not a boat with many systems to maintain. Nor is does she have the plushness of today's production cruisers. But she is truly handsome, functional, easy to maintain and a joy to operate.
COMPASS ROSE is an elegant and classic, yet simple Downeast Cruiser. You are welcome to get in touch with David if you'd like to learn more about her. She was commissioned in the summer of 2012 and used occasionally. He has photos of the rebuild from 1991 and, as her former owner for nearly 20 years, has considerable knowledge of her history.
