The answer to the trailer - sailor's lament: "I love sailing, but I hate setting up." The Picnic Cat is a 14 foot, gaff-rigged cat- boat that is a pure delight to sail. But it is our Mastendr Quick Rig Sailing System that makes it unique. Setup and retrieval are effortless - a matter of less than 10 minutes - because gaff, boom, sail and hinged mast re- main on the boat while trailering, as do the shrouds. All that's necessary at the launch ramp is to raise the mast, attach the headstay with the quick release lever and sail off. It's as simple as that. On the road, the mast, gaff and boom stow securely on the boom gallows, assuring worry-free trailering. Unlike a sloop's, her mast, because it steps in the bow of the boat, does not extend beyond the end of the boat when folded to horizontal. In the water, her stability comes from broad hull form and low-center-of-effort gaff-rigged sail plan. The centerboard and centerboard trunk in the Picnic Cat are made of stainless steel. This unit is a subassembly that is built in our ma- chine shop and then installed into the bottom of the Picnic Cat. By building the unit in the machine shop, we are able to build every one exactly the same, and stay within machining tolerances vs. the large tolerances required for a fiberglass assembly. Also, the stainless steel centerboard assembly is much stronger and many times less susceptible to damage than traditional fiberglass centerboards. The trunk is fitted over with a varnished, solid mahogany box in the finished yacht. If you are familiar with Com - Pac Yachts, you'll know what we mean by Com - Pac quality. If not, think of solid, hand-laid glass, elegant varnished mahogany, solid teak, brass rubrails, flawless stainless and bulletproof construction. The Picnic Cat's timeless design is from the drawing board of Clark Mills, who drew the lines of our 16CB and 23/3 as well as the Optimist Pram and Windmill One Design.
