RELIANCE and her sisterships were originally designed by G. L. Watson & Co. as fishing vessels for tough offshore work, some of which included ocean research. The firm had been designing power and sailing vessels both for pleasure and commercial service for over 100 years.

RELIANCE was built in 1975 by Halmatic and fitted-out by Morris and Lorimer (Sandbank) as a research vessel for the University of London' Marine Laboratory in Scotland.

She was one of 15, 8 of which were built for fishing in the North Sea 12 months of the year, which speaks to her capability--in capable hands of course.

The conversion from the University of London commercial service to pleasure use was accomplished over a three year period with all final fit-out by David Walkey and crew at Gweek Quay Boatyard, Gweek, Cornwall. David Walkey & Co. specialize in and are highly regarded for their rebuild/refit/restoration work of traditional wooden motoryachts and sailboats.

Their workmanship is hi end, some say over the top.

The substantial refit of RELIANCE was completely comprehensive, in any knowledgeable yachtsman's definition; she was totally gutted, all systems were removed and replaced the entire interior of the hull, decks and superstructure were completely thermally insulated to the waterline.

At that point, with exhaustive detail and craftsmanship, she was entirely fit into a luxurious trawler (with beautiful design and execution, finish work and layout) to satisfy the most diligent, attentive and exacting yachtsman.

She has two lovely staterooms with tasteful furnishings, an elegant salon adjacent to both the galley and the aft deck, a gorgeous, large well thoughtout pilothouse.

She smells like new, feels like new and works like new. Considering dependibility as an important variable in the search, the name RELIANCE speaks to the veracity of her being.

A remarkable survivor from a different age of yachting.
Nell was built by Thos Orr in Greenock on the Clyde in 1887 to a design by G.L. Watson for C.L. Robertson, Rear Commodore of the West of Scotland Yacht Club.
Watson was the most celebrated yacht designer of his day, his most famous yacht being the great Britannia for the Prince of Wales.

Length on deck 45'10"
Length water line 45'
Beam 12'
Draft 7'
Bowsprit 14'
Sail area 1210sq'
25TM

The design is inspired by the Loch Fyne skiff type of fishing boat common to the Scottish West coast with straight stem, long keel and distinctive pointed stern with the rudder hung on the stern post.
She has ample freeboard and generous beam with a flush deck.

Planked in 1.5" pitch-pine, copper fastened to heavy grown oak frames.
The bottom is copper sheathed.
External 7 ton ballast keel.
Oak floors with additional fabricated steel floors.
Laid pine deck, caulked and payed.

The original rig was a gaff cutter, changed at some time in the distant past to the present gaff ketch on massive masts and spars.

Built without an engine, she now has a Petter Lister 90hp diesel installed in 1990.

She has a small aft cock-pit, bronze tiller, a flush pine deck and original teak sky-lights and entrance hatch.

The interior has survived more or less original and is stunning, panelled in oak in raised and fielded panels with fluted pillasters, iconic capitals and beautifully carved egg and dart cornicing in ebony.
2-berth aft cabin with the engine under a large box between the berths aft.
Next forward a stbd heads compartment and port storage locker.
Through into the amazing panelled saloon cabin with port and stbd settee berths, sky-light above, modern wood burning stove.
Forward of the saloon is the galley to port with a Taylor's cooker.
Double berth guest cabin opposite to stbd.
Through in to the 2-berth fore cabin.

Sold by Wooden Ships to the previous owner 15 years ago and rescued by the present owner 3 years ago, she has had a refit to get her back in commission and is now sailing again.

In the recent refit, several shifts of topside planking were replaced, the topsides recaulked, the deck sealed to make it water-tight, the standing and running rigging replaced by the classic yacht rigging specialists, TS Rigging of Maldon with new blocks.
The internal iron ballast was replacedwith 4 tons of cast lead - a huge and very worthwhile job.
The bottom end was strengthened by the addition of several fabricated mild steel floors.
New keel bolts.
Rewired on 12v circuits

Very serviceable suit of sails comprising mainsail, mizzen staysail, flying jib and genoa.

100 galls fresh water in 2 tanks
100 galls fuel in stainless steel tank.

Compass, GPS, VHF, sounder. Original windlass, lots of chain and several anchors.

Nell is surely one of the greatest surviving yachts from the period and now needs a new owner who appreciates her cultural value, prepared to give her the refit she needs to ensure she is still sailing in another 100 years.
