The design of the Fairey Marine Huntsman and the smaller sister, the Huntress were the inspiration of Ray Hunt and designed by Alan Burnard. These remarkable boats had considerable success in 1960's power boat racing, in particular the famous Cowes - Torquay Race and came to represent the classic type of the period.
The planing hull design has been copied in various guises since but none compare with the style and character of the orignial boats.
28'10" x 8'9" x 2'10" 4 tons displ.
The hull is a relatively deep V with single chine and spray rails. Gently radiussed transom stern.
Built by Fairey Marine on the Isle of Wight. The construction is in laminated mahogany, 5 layers in the bottom up to the chine, 4 layers in the topsides. Once laminated the hulls were cooked in an autoclave to cure the glue.
Teak deck over ply sub deck.
The superstructure is in ply with a swept-round polycarbonate windscreen in a chromed frame. The cabin windows are polycarbonate in chromed frames. Chromed air vents each side duct air into the engine compartment. Chromed stemhead fitting with chain roller. Chromed cleats and fairleads and a stainless steel pull-pit. A stainless steel mast carries lights and a radar plinth.
The engines are placed midships under a sloping deck with a flat teak-laid floor to the cock-pit aft and a drop-down seat across the stern.
The driving position is midships with a helmsman and navigator's seat. This boat is fitted with a pair of smart white bucket seats. Steering is by wheel to Whitlock gear-box and rod to twin bronze spade rudders. Teak grating box for the helmsman to stand on.
Twin Perkins T6354 145hp 5.95 litre turbo diesels with Borg Warner 72c hydraulic boxes and conventional shaft drive give 27knts. Single lever Morse controls. Although the clocks show a little over 1000 hours, in the major refit the engines were overhauled with skimmed heads, new valves and seats, refaced blocks, new heat exchangers and pumps. New shafts and props.
90 galls diesel in 2 GRP tanks each side of the engines.
4 x 12v batteries on 24v circuits.
Deep well in front of the seats with centre door to the cabin.
Galley shelf to port with stainless steel sink, fresh water hand pump.
Heads compartment to stbd with sea toilet.
2 generous settee berths sweeping round forward with forward bulkhead door to chain locker. Exposed hull sides with a shelf, epoxy-bonded to the hull for extra strength. New Campa hatch in the cabin roof. Teak sole. Smart white cushions.
20 gall stainless steel water tank under between the berths forward.
In 2000 this Huntsman had a major refit at a cost of £60,000 in a Bristol boatyard when the deck and beamshelf were replaced and the hull skin in parts to 6" below deck level, new stem to wl, new cabin roof, windscreen and frame, all fittings rechromed and new windows in addition to the engine work.
Polished stainless steel anchor, chain, grid compass, VHF, Nasa speed/depth/distance. Electric bilge pump, horn, fire extinguishers etc. 2005 survey with all recommendations carried out. All bills, refit spec etc available for inspection.
A nice, clean, smart example of the class at a sensible price.
