Manufacturer Provided Description
The Dean 400 is a new direction for Dean Catamarans. This fast 40-foot cruising catamaran signals the new trend in aerodynamic detailing, while matching performance with unequaled accommodation in well-styled, high-volume hulls. Dean Catamarans have drawn on their experience of constructing over 90 production catamarans to create a new boat that is fast, easy and comfortable to sail. The Dean 400 has a reverse asymmetric hull shape, meaning the wave build-up in the tunnel is significantly reduced. Bridgedeck clearance is a minimum of 800 mm rising to 1.2 meters at the stern, and the inside of each hull features a wave turnover flare further reducing the likelihood of pounding. In keeping with modern trends, the hull and deck is a composite of Divinycell, balsa core and quadriaxial glass, hand-laid and vacuum-bagged. Unlike most large catamarans the Dean 400 is built in one piece - the hulls - bridgedeck and cockpit - deck - and boasts a solid laminate below the waterline. As a result both hull and deck are light and tough. The sail design incorporates a large-roach, fully-battened mainsail along with a roller furling headsail set on a well-raked mast - mast cap being 3.2 meters aft of the foot. The wide staying base and outboard shrouds give maximum support to the 19.5-meter rig, which is easy to handle having no running backstays. The Dean 400's performance belies her exceptional accommodation even by catamaran standards. There is two-meter headroom throughout, four spacious en suite cabins - three with showers, one with hip-bath. The saloon, galley and nav station are elegantly combined in an open plan arrangement. The cockpit extends the social area of the saloon creating 20 square meters of indoor-outdoor living without affecting the sailing functions of the vessel as there is a working cockpit for sail control and the twin wheel steering. Semi-balanced rudders give good maneuverability, quick tacking and fast acceleration out of a turn. The Dean 400 gives one all the flexibility one wants whether cruising, on charter or showing a clean wake to the opposition. The Dean 400 has what it takes to do them all well.

Accommodations

The Dean 400 sleeps 8 persons in 4 x private staterooms. There are 2 x heads. The galley is "down" in the starboard hull and has open sight lines to the salon. Interior surfaces are finished with a blend of molded fiberglass, oak veneers and solid oak trim.

A dinette area seating 8 x persons around a large table is located in the bridgedeck cabin. Storage areas are provided beneath the seats and behind the seat backs. The bridgedeck cabin also houses a navigation station with electronics area and chart table.

Steps lead from the bridgedeck cabin to the port and starboard hulls. The sleeping cabins are accessed from the hulls. The two forward staterooms each have a king size berth and the two aft staterooms each have a full size berth. There is extensive storage in:

  • 4 x full closets with shelves
