1969 Ohlson 38 "Seriphos"

Built in Sweden to precise standards by mastercraftsman, the Olhson 38 has been heralded as one of the most magnificently built sloops of all time.  Mr. Ohlson, Swedish designer of world-championship and other successful racing yachts, developed in the Ohlson 38 a medium displacement hull that proved extremely successful on on the race course on all points of sail.  Over the years, the Ohlson 38 has come to be known as one of the most balanced, sea-kindly boats by all who have sailed her.

"Seriphos" is in exceptional condition as she has been constantly upgraded and beautifully maintained by the same family who in 1969 took her for her first sea trials off the coast of Sweden.

Accommodations

African mahogany interior with satin finish throughout, white fiberglass overhead and bulkheads, varnished cabin sole. The entire cabin interior below the trunk has a hand-rubbed varnish finish, with no fiberglass showing whatsoever.

The forward cabin features two 6'5" berths with one drawer and one locker under each.  Storage shelves are located over each berth.  The forepeak has stowage room for anchor gear.  Laying in one of the berths, one can't help but be transported back in time, to an era when boats were built of wood and where every detail of construction served an important purpose.

The head is located aft of the forward cabin and includes two large linen lockers with sliding doors.  Vanity has stainless wash enclosed, with two doors permitting cutting off either or both cabins.  Also, these doors can be joined, closing off the toilet compartment itself, permitting access to the forward cabin while the head is in use.

The main cabin is finished in varnished hand rubbed mahagany and beatifully detailed.  "Seriphos" was built with the "conventional" layout which includes a 6'5" single berth to starboard and opposite to port, a single 6'5" berth with an outboard fixed pilot berth above.  There are three storage drawers below each berth on the port side.  On the starboard side, there are three drawers below the single berth with three deep storage lockers above.

Galley

The large galley area is covered with Formica and trimmed with African mahogany.  The galley includes a gimbaled two-burner stove with oven, which is mounted in a stainless steel well with one silver drawer and large pot locker underneath.  The single stainless steel sink is equipped with fresh water.  To the left of the stove there is a very large and well-insulated stainless steel icebox, which is compartmentalized and drains into an enclosed sump tank.  The icebox capacity is approximately 125 lbs!  In addition, there are large lockers for dishes, food and utensils.  The galley offers generous counter space throughout with plenty of prep and staging room for meals.  Whale water pumps in galley and head.

Tankage

Fiberglass tanks for water and fuel are integral and built into the keel for exceptional strength.  All tanks are fully baffled, vented and lined with special resin; and with large sealed inspection covers.  Water tank capacity is approximately 48 gallons.  Fuel tank capacity is approximately 21 gallons.  All tanks are well below the water line for extra stability.

Decks and Construction

The Ohlson 38 was designed by Mr. Einar Ohlson and complete by Ohlson Brothers in Sweden.  The hull was built by the Tyler Boat Company in England.

The hull is built entirely of fiberglass, using cloth laid up by hand, with 6,000 lbs of lead inside for less maintenance and prevention of keel bolt leaks.

Vertical plywood stiffeners in the bow and stern, which are encapsulated in hand, laid fiberglass, provide even more longitudinal stiffness.  Fiberglass Rudder.  Hull molded under the supervision of Lloyd’s.  Every Ohlson 38 hull has a Lloyd’s Certificate.
