Accommodations

The Nelson 38 features a very bright and airy interior finished in distinctive varnished pickled oak with carpeted soles.  There is superb natural light and ventilation with eight opening ports and six hatches all with screens, as well as the wheel house being surrounded with fixed windows.  All of the hatches are fitted with blinds as well as screens.  A 30,000 BTU reverse cycle (heats & cools) air conditioning unit with air handlers in the salon, galley and stateroom easily handles heating and cooling needs under any condition.

Starting forward is the Stateroom with offset queen berth measuring 78" X 54" below which there is storage and above which there is a full length shelf.  Access to the anchor locker is at the fwd bulkhead.  Opposite the berth are several lockers and drawers and all the way aft is a dressing seat.  Aft of the berth to port is a good sized hanging locker and then private access to the head.

The Head, which may also be accessed from the main cabin, features Corian type laminated counter with moulded in sink, H&C pressure water, ensuite shower draining to a separate grey water tank (2 ea 26 gal water tanks), good storage in gasketed lockers and a fresh water or salt water W.C. plumbed via a Y-valve to the holding tank. Pressure for toilet is via a dedicated pump with a new Headhunter and a fresh water backup pump.

Continuing aft one finds the Galley to starboard featuring Corian type laminate counter tops with large single basin sink with pressure H&C fresh water faucets.  Refrigerated foodstuffs are stored in an Isotherm dual voltage refrigerator freezer unit while cooking is handled on the Ceran two burner electric cooktop, in the convection microwave mounted below or in a counter top toaster oven.  There is generous storage for crockery, pots, pans and dry food stuffs in several lockers and drawers.

Opposite the Galley is a comfortable L-Settee, below which there is storage and above which there is storage in lockers and shelves.  Dining is from an oval pedestal table with attractive inlays.  There are additional drawers in the pedestal.

Up three steps to the Salon and helm area.  The helm is to port featuring full vessel controls, navigation equipment and electrical distribution panels.  The helm seat is mounted on joiner work which houses a large locker with shelves.  A companion seat is similarly mounted, with built in isotherm refrigerator, forward of which is an area that serves as a removable chart table.

Aft of the helm area is the Salon featuring straight settees P&S, below which there is storage in large drawers.  Both settees are sufficient length to be used as a berth should occassion require.  The Salon is fitted with a larger inlaid oval pedestal table.  Double doors open to the cockpit allowing the lucky owners and guests to bring the outside in. A removable teak cocktail table and closed-cell foam cushions make for pleasant entertaining. There is a stainless frame and cockpit awning.

Throughout the North Sea 38 is a wonderfully bright and airy boat and a pleasure to be aboard.

Battery control switches were moved from the engine room to the helm.

Hull & Deck

Solid fiberglass hull, stretchd 2 feet, with a very substantial internal grid system with Jade Green gel coat with black boot top.  As one would expect given the nature of the Nelson 38/40 there are robust synthetic rub rails which, as this Nelson 38/40 is a yacht, have been attractively offset with varnished teak trim.  The bottom is finished in a red multi season anti fouling.  Built into the hull are stainless steel lifting rings so that she may easily be lifted onto a larger vessel should need arise.

The deck and house are partially cored fiberglass with a glued down (no fastenings) teak overlay on the side decks and cockpit both for its superb non-skid attributes as well as the attractive appearance.  All hardware is carefully cast polished stainless steel and like the rest of this unique yacht are nicely detailed and over built.

Deck layout:  The cockpit is easily accessed through double doors from the Salon and features fore and aft bench seats P&S.  Below the cockpit is a large lazarette space that also houses the generator and some other auxillary systems.  There is an enormous amount of storage in the seats and lazarette.

Double doors at the aft end of the cockpit allow one to access the swim platform and tender.  A step off the cockpit seats to access the side decks leading forward.  There are grabrails mounted wherever one might wish allowing for easy transits fore and aft.

Additional

On just her second owner, this Nelson 38 (actually 39'-9") was built as a high end cruising tender to a 255' expedition yacht, with literally no expense spared.  Likewise, owner #2 did a very much no expense spared re-fit after his purchase in late 2009 totaling well over $200,000.  She is on the market now only as they desire to routinely have another couple join them and require a second stateroom.

She is exceptionally well equipped and the only exclusions are the owner's personal items.

History and Background

"North Sea" (previously "Peace") is a yacht version of a North Sea pilot boat, built at the Nelson Yard in Pembrokeshire, Wales, with construction starting in 1999 and completing in 2000. The boat was used as a tender on "Lone Ranger," a 255 foot ocean-going tug built in Germany in 1973 and converted to yacht service in 1992.

Pilot boats must be capable of operating in adverse conditions.  "North Sea" meets Design Category "B", or "Offshore", defined as up to and including wind force 8 and wave heights up to and including 13.1 feet.  The vessel is self-righting and has a high-capacity emergency bilge pump system designed around four water-tight compartments and an engine-driven pump evacuating water through an owner-controlled manifold system.  As would be expected for a pilot boat, the hull is protected by heavy rub rails.

Since "North Sea" was carried on the deck of the mother ship, she comes with a full cradle, lifting harness with stainless steel strongback, four lifting points in the hull, and several sets of covers.  In order for the vessel to be self-sufficient while cruising the world, the spares complement includes a second set of propellers, a spare propeller shaft and a complement of spares and replacement parts.

"North Sea" was purchased by the current owner from the original owner in late 2009.  With the puchase came a selection of construction drawings, lay-up schedules, owner's manuals, certificates of conformity, and numerous construction photographs and comments made during the construction process.

During 2010 and 2011, the boat went through a major refit at Maine Yacht Center in Portland, Maine.  Among notable projects, the electrical system was improved significantly, the fuel system was redesigned, fuel tanks were cleaned and inspected, a full suite of new electronics and a new generator were installed, and most systems were upgraded or replaced. Simpson stainless steel davits and an AB hard bottom inflatable tender were added.

We have prepared a CD with over 60 high resolution photographs of this exceptional Nelson 38.  Please call us and we will send you one.
