Accommodations: The general layout is the classic double cabin arrangement: an amidships galley/salon/dinette with full-beam master stateroom aft and VIP guest stateroom all the way forward, both with en-suite heads. The fully enclosed aft deck is above the master stateroom and the fully enclosed flybridge (fabricated of fiberglass/wood composite---NOT formica) is above the salon. Cleverly tucked away between the forward cabin and the salon is an office/navigation station with lots of space for computers, printers, books, and other accoutrements of shipboard management. Adjacent to this office is the entrance to the full-beam engine room. |
Salon: Even with the wide walk-around side-decks, the salon is amazingly spacious. Accessed from the aft deck via a white aluminum door with large double windows, and down four wide teak steps (with matching teak banister), one finds the U-shaped galley on the starboard side and the booth-type dinette further forward. The dinette’s tabletop is glossy-varnished burl with a bull-nosed keeper that is supported by a highly polished stainless steel pedestal, which can hand-crank down to form a berth platform. There is a dedicated berth cushion/mattress suitable for a large person or two small ones. In dinette-mode, five can be seated. There is under-seat storage. Between the galley and dinette back is a recess for books or plants and underneath, there is a pullout pantry. Next aft is the galley island housing the sinks and stovetop with storage under. |
Master Cabin Aft: Three steps aft and down from the salon. Access is through a teak door with louvers at the bottom (similar to the others including the head doors to promote ventilation inside the boat). Carpeting is the same as in the salon. There is a large mirror on the forward bulkhead. The centerline berth measures 60” x 80” and is covered with a green floral print sham (pillows have matching shams). The stainless steel freshwater tank lives under the berth. The teak aft bulkhead has built-in bookshelves (with removable keepers) at the overhead level. |
Master Head: Forward to starboard is the door to the head. Inside, mirrors abound, including the overhead, which really throws the light around from overhead halogens and the opening portlight. There is a Sealand Vacuflush freshwater head. The freestanding brass toilet paper holder is a classy touch. Hiding behind a bi-fold door is a small Jacuzzi bathtub and shower. |
VIP Guest Cabin Forward: All the way forward, just two steps down from the salon, is the VIP cabin, which has a louvered teak privacy door. The centerline pedestal berth, with twin drawer storage under, measures 6’6” x 5’ and allows access to the Cruisair unit. A combination of fore and aft bulkhead mirrors, three overhead halogen lights, two reading lights, two portlights, and an overhead hatch provides a well-lit, spacious feel for overnight guests who can communicate their bonhomie via an intercom. There is a mirrored vanity, wide countertops, numerous lockers, drawers, and cubbies to stash all their stuff. A Magnavox 13” TV/VCR faces the berth. |
Forward Head: Just aft and starboard of the VIP cabin is the head which has a teak louvered privacy door. Similar to the Master head, the toilet is a Vacuflush unit, the bulkhead, overhead, and vanity are all mirrored, and there is an opening portlight, plus an overhead halogen light. The bi-fold shower door has a high threshold to keep puddles on the teak and holly sole (the entire forward accommodations area is teak sole) to a minimum. This shower stall has a soap and shampoo dispenser, teak floor grating, and an overhead light. Vanity is green Corian with a brass faucet. Brass freestanding TP holder. 110 VAC duplex outlet. |
Office: Across from the head is the office with chair and quite large desktop area, well-lit with reading light, overhead light, and opening portlight. There is plenty of room for computer/communications gadgetry, books and manuals, and charts. The aft locker door hides the Splendide 2000 washer/dryer (110VAC) unit. The step-box (up) to the salon hinges up to access the full-beam engine room. |
Aft Deck: This hard-enclosed area practically doubles the entertaining space of the boat. Fully air conditioned, carpeted (light green with bound edges), and furnished with ‘Lord Flanders’ faux rattan sofa, two chairs, ottoman (beige/green palm motif cushions), and glass-topped coffee table, this “back porch” provides the not-easily attained feel of casual elegance. There are no fewer than eleven windows (not including the port and starboard wing doors - double windowed - for side deck access) each with it’s own teak valance and custom mini-blind mounted with anti-rattle wires. The large side windows slide open, there is a portside aft window that hinges open, and to starboard is a similar window that combines with a half door allowing access to the Euro swim platform --- open air ambiance easily attained. The overhead is a custom bone vinyl with eight flush-mounted 12 VDC halogen lights and two fore-aft stainless steel grabrails. The forward portion, flanked by the wing doors, features a molded-in sink with gooseneck faucet, bottle storage, U-line ‘Icerette’ icemaker (25 lbs/day), 25” RCA TV/VCR, 110VAC duplex outlet, cocktail glass storage behind teak-framed glass doors, SMX Cruisair A/C control (one of five zones onboard), intercom (one of five stations - flybridge, both staterooms, and salon), and a window to the flybridge. Of note is the drawer storage here and throughout the boat - dovetail joints and Formica bottoms found usually on only the finest yachts. Up three molded-in steps (teak step pads) to the flybridge. |
Enclosed Flybridge: Access via wide steps. No ladders. Fully air conditioned with 16,000 BTU, which is plenty for a Florida August. This optional enclosure is aluminum/wood composite with FRP top; 360º visibility with sliding side windows and an aft hinged door opening out onto the boat deck. Matching green bound carpet and custom beige (with black piping) seat cushions help meld this level to the aft deck. Seating is bench-style (with storage under) to port and L-shaped to starboard (with corner table --- enough for eight, not including the Pompanette helm chair with its Todd adjustable footrest. There are switches for the overhead lights, aft spreader lights, and flybridge eyebrow lights. A Sony 35w x 4 CD/AM/FM player pipes music to the speakers and is a separate system in addition to the salon unit. Power outlets are 12 VDC and 110 VAC duplex. Steering is Hynautic hydraulic and the wheel’s rim is notably oversized which translates into added comfort for the captain. |
Galley:
Black & Decker toaster oven |
Electrical: A single 50 amp, 220-volt shore cord via a Glendenning Cablemaster supplies the main breaker panel located at the foot of the steps in the aft salon. There are two 110 VAC and one 220 VAC panels, each with it’s own ammeter and voltmeter. The 12 VDC breaker panel has a voltmeter and ammeter. |
Navigation & Electronic Equipment:
Seawatch TV antenna (under F/B eyebrow) |
Deck Equipment: The Euro transom/swim platform features four molded-in steps (each with a courtesy light) from aft deck to the platform with stainless steel handrail assist. Stern cleats port and starboard. Starboard side recess for shore power cable (Glendenning) and TV/Phone inlets; adjacent freshwater fill cap. Deck plate for emergency tiller steering. Portside locker for hot/cold telephone shower, freshwater wash down spigot, and dockline storage. Twin spreader lights on trailing edge of boat deck. Generator exhausts on starboard side --- well forward of the swim platform walking surfaces.
Engine Room & Mechanical Equipment: Access via hinged stepbox at forward bulkhead and well lit with six overhead fluorescent lights. Headroom is over 50” and there is good equipment access. Fuel tanks outboard of main engines. Drip pans under each engine. Airseps installed on DD 6-71Tis, possibly the best engine Detroit ever built in terms of longevity, compactness, economy (35 GPH @ 2100 rpm), and relative expense to maintain over time. Water lift mufflers are quiet. Primary fuel filters are Racor 500 for the 20kW Kohler Genset (660 hrs.) and Duplex (manifolded) SeaPro 300 DDA units. There is a full engine gauge set, plus start-stops, mounted on the portside forward bulkhead. Adjacent are the main engine and house batteries --- these, plus the dedicated genset battery, are charged by a Promatic 50A x 3 (1200 Amp/day) unit. Main battery disconnect switches. Kidde FE241 Fire extinguisher system. Oversized sea strainers and seacocks for the main engines. Of note are the fuel and freshwater plumbing: rigid copper lines, color-coded

Summary: “Fax Of Life” represents the best of the classic double cabin designs. Space utilization is excellent in that there is a great deal of square footage in which to entertain and yet the storage capacity is huge and cleverly situated. Moving about the boat is a joy due to the use of wide stairs as opposed to steep ladders. Her low center of gravity precludes the need for stabilizers and yet she has a good turn of speed with only modest horsepower resulting in real economy of operation. And, those 6-71s will last a long, long time. The usual “sorting out” process of a new boat is already complete. This included the professional updating and alignment of the underwater running gear resulting in a very smooth ride. The hull bottom has been barrier coated. The interior joinery is first-rate: dovetail joints are found in top quality furniture and only on very expensive yachts. Finally, the owners of this vessel tastefully decorated and specified practical, yet elegant furnishings that will be appreciated by knowledgeable yachts-folk. |
