Rebuild Ulysses Rebuild in Brisbane The yacht was originally designed and built by Trinity/Halter Marine. About six months before delivery in 2002, Ulysses was damaged by fire. Damaged Areas: - Two guest cabins and the adjoining hallway were damaged - The remainder of the interior, installed at that stage, suffered smoke damage - The pipe tunnel and tank area were affected by smoke but not to the level of the interior - The Engine room and lazarette were unaffected due to the watertight bulkhead between - Steel plating in one bulkhead and the galley floor above were affected by heat After lengthy negotiations, in 2004 ULYSSES was transported to Brisbane by Dockwise where she was re-designed, reconstructed and significantly up graded for delivery to the owner in mid 2006, when she was measured and her Certificate of Registry issued. The work was done in the Brisbane Marine Industrial Park, which was owned by Viking Industries, a public company. Repairs to damaged areas: - Removal of the entire interior down to and including all rough-ins, plumbing and electrical, including brackets, hangers and all insulation - All the damaged areas of the hull were taken back to steel then re-coated before installing a new interior - 16 tonnes of steel plating was replaced under the guidance of class, including the forward guest bulkhead and galley floor - Everything onboard during the fire was replaced Upgrades to the vessel done in Brisbane include: - The entire superstructure was replaced with a new aluminium superstructure including several changes to the general arrangement (this upgrade was not due to the damage but owners upgrade in design) - Upgrade to UK MCA LY2 compliance - 100% new interior was installed - Upgrade of the sound and vibration specification - Re-arrangement of layout was designed to suit new superstructure and maximise space and flow - The exterior was fully re-faired and re-painted - All new teak decking was laid - New layout on sundeck included a more concealed helipad, a mast with an arch and internal staircase access. - A new swim platform and transom design including the lazarette was added - Additional waterline subdivision at below deck level was added - All appliances were upgraded - New exterior sliding doors and drop down windows were installed - The only equipment to stay untouched in the engine room was the main engines, gear boxes and the chilled water system for the AC. Everything else was upgraded and re-located including a large amount of piping - An air conditioned control room was added to the engine room - Upgraded to 4 Quantum fin zero speed stabilizers - Conversion of ballast space forward to a storeroom - All new electrical system, including design, main switchboard, generators and alarm monitoring. - Additional structure under cranes on foredeck to handle heavier loads - The hull was fully tank tested at Marin in Holland, after which new rudders, propellers, shafts, bulbous bow and additional length to the main keel were added. All this work was done to improve performance. All of the work in Brisbane was managed and controlled by the owner’s representatives. Some of the additional contractors involved were: Furniture Manufacturing Co. of Australia (FMCA) – Interior fitout Nautical Contracting – Teak decking & exterior furniture Cervina – electrical design, install and alarm monitoring Marine Applications – General engineering Marine Engineering – Super Structure construction Blackline Shipping – Super Structure construction Kiwi Global – Exterior and interior paint East Coast Yacht Refinishing – Exterior Paint. |
