Overview
Long-Term Cruising
Designed for long-term, extended cruising in remote areas.
  • Bali Hai III was designed to be easily handled by two people with halyards and sheets led back through line stoppers in the cockpit to power winches.
  • There are two freezers and refrigerators, one of which can be used as a vegetable cooler or refrigerator.
  • There is extensive storage space from a large anchor locker at the bow all the way to a convenient locker on the swim platform for swimming accessories, stern anchor, and such. There is a particularly large lazarette and cockpit locker and a built-in life raft compartment in the cockpit. There are two outboard vented lockers for extra fuel and propane. These lockers store: eight 5-gallon jerry jugs, a 2.25-gallon jerry jug, plus three 6-gallon outboard motor fuel tanks, for a total of 60 gallons of gasoline, as well there are three 20-pound propane bottles, which will last two people for at least 10 months. There is no need to clutter deck space with tied down containers.
  • There are three fuel tanks holding approximately 400 gallons of diesel.
  • Nothing has to be stored on deck except the dinghy.
  • Extra large dorades and hatches improve comfort in the tropics.

Performance
  • It has a carbon fiber mast, spreaders, mast head and bow sprit pole with a cored interior that keep weight down, add to boat speed, and reduce fuel consumption.
  • There is a freshwater ballast system so that 240 gallons can be pumped from one side to the other in a few minutes using large transfer pumps. This reduces heeling about 5 degrees, contributing to both boat speed and comfort.
  • Bali Ha’i III was first overall in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Regatta from New Zealand to Fiji. It was the first mono-hull to be first overall in years.
  • In our circumnavigation, we had many 200NM plus days. The boat can often sail at sustained speeds over 9.5 to 10 knots with shorter periods in excess of that.
  • The pilothouse is well-designed for comfort and east of keeping watch on long passages.

Maintenance
It has a large engine room, which makes it easy to service the engine, gen set, water maker and SCUBA compressor.

Equipment
  • The engine is a 140 hp Yanmar
  • There are two dinghy outboard motors: a 25 hp and a 5hp, in good working order
  • There is a built-in SCUBA compressor
  • The boat has three working anchors, plus a stern anchor
  • There is a new Class B AIS, which received and transmits
  • There is an Interphase forward-and side-looking, dual scan sonar, which works well at reduced boat speeds.
  • The pilothouse windows and hatches are covered with well-attached sunshades whether hatches are open or closed.
  • The nav station includes chart plotter; GPS; KVH Gyrotrac; heading, roll and pitch indicator; wind indicator; two autopilots for redundancy; HF and VHF radios.
  • There is a 4-bladed folding prop, which is more efficient when motoring than a feathering prop.
  • There is a Four winds wind generator
  • There is a combination washer/dryer in the galley
  • There is a built-in microwave and a 3 burner stove with oven
  • There is a freshwater shower at the stern for use on the swim platform
  • A passerelle, required for Mediterranean marinas, is included and is stored in the port lazarette.

Remarks
As stunning as the tropical flower with which it shares its name, the Kanter Bougainvillea 62 is a spectacular off-shore, world-cruising yacht. Beyond featuring truly exhilarating sailing speeds, great stability and an unmatched level of comfort, the Bougainvillea 62 is also one of the safest blue-water cruising yachts in the world.

Named the Offshore Cruiser of the Year in 1991, the Bougainvillea 62’s exceptional performance and cruising comfort are the result of the winged keel’s low center of gravity. This allows for a moderate draft as well as superior roll damping, low induced drag and tight pointing angles.
