Accommodations

ATALANTA'S interior is finished in beautiful dark stained mahogany, white laminate and stainless steel with teak and holly cabin sole. Her arrangement is well conceived. The main companionway stairs lead to a spacious main salon and galley area that is bright and open. Forward are guest accommodations, a workshop and sail storage. Aft are two nicely appointed guest staterooms, a navigation center and the spacious master stateroom. All staterooms feature hanging lockers and ample storage. Large hatches and skylights deliver great light and ventilation. Hull side ports also provide excellent visibility outside, and she is fitted with special Smart Screen privacy glass ports in the head and aft stateroom that turn opaque at the flip of a switch.

The forepeak is a wide open space ideal for use as a storage area, workshop or guest stateroom. Furthest forward there are two pipe berths. Below the berths are benches with hinged tops for access to divided storage. There are fixed ports in both sides of the hull just aft of the pilot berths. Further aft there are stainless bars for hanging sheets and spare halyards. Aft and to starboard is a large shelf with two drawers below. Below the drawers are two large shelves for the storage of extra blocks, shackles, winch handles and other gear.

To port is the forward head. White laminate counters and surfaces make the space functional and easy to maintain. The manual head is located at the forward inboard end of the compartment facing aft. A counter with stainless sink and hot/cold faucet is located outboard along the hull side. There is a shelf and mirror above. Another shelf runs the length of the forward end of the compartment. The shower is integral to the space, and there is a teak grate over the shower sump. The sink wand deploys to be used as a showerhead and mounts on the aft bulkhead. There is a stainless grab bar/towel rack on the aft bulkhead. A fan helps ventilate the space , and a deck prism lets in natural light. Opposite the head to starboard is a tall hanging locker. There are two large opening hatches in the forepeak, facilitating easy sail changes while racing, excellent ventilation at anchor and good natural light. Stainless ladder rungs are installed between both hatches to allow access to the deck.

Aft and to port is a large pullman berth. There are three drawers below the berth, and there is additional open storage space below for sails or other large items.

Opposite to starboard is a workbench that spans the length of the compartment along the hull side. Above the bench is a large sliding door locker. Below, there is great storage for tools, hardware and spare parts in three drawers and four large lockers. Two deck prisms and four overhead lights illuminate this space.

A large mahogany door leads aft into the forward end of the galley and main salon. The main salon and galley are well appointed and conceived allowing easy movement throughout the large, open space. The combined salon and galley area feature twelve overhead lights, six fixed hull side ports, and two opening hatches. Four deck prisms and two skylights add additional light and increase the open feeling of the space.

Forward and to starboard is the day head with Vacuflush toilet located at the forward inboard end. There is a mirror above on the forward bulkhead. Outboard along the hull side is a granite countertop with stainless sink and single lever faucet. There is a locker above and below the sink with two towel racks on the aft bulkhead. A single overhead light illuminates the space. The compartment is finished in a combination of mahogany veneers, white laminate and a teak and holly sole.

Aft of the head to starboard of the galley is a short settee. There are two drawers below and a large hanging locker above and outboard. Above is a shelf that extends to the hull side.

Opposite the settee is the large J-shaped galley. Counters and backsplashes are white laminate with mahogany fiddles and cabinetry and stainless grab bars. At the forward inboard end is a large single bin stainless sink with single lever faucet. There is a large locker with shelves below. An icemaker is located forward of the sink below the counter and accessed from the passageway to the forward cabin. The forward end of the counter is an open space with lockers and shelves above. Below there is a series of four drawers and a locker with two shelves. At the forward outboard end of the counter is the Force 10 3-burner stove/oven. There is a small locker below for storage of pots and pans. Aft is a hinged trash bin locker. Outboard are two large lockers with shelves, two smaller lockers and an open shelf which is behind the stove. Aft is the large top loading fridge with three stainless steel shelves. Outboard is a stainless microwave and four 110v galley outlets. There is a shelf above the microwave that extends to the hull side. Aft of the fridge is a tall locker with two large shelves that provide additional galley storage. At the center of the salon there is an island bar trimmed with stainless fiddles. Below is a large liquor locker with storage for glasses.

The main salon is aft of the galley. To starboard is the entertainment center with television, DVD player and surround sound stereo in a cabinet that can be closed off. To either side there is a large shelf along the side of the hull. Two comfortable leather chairs and a small table provide an excellent spot to relax on passage with a drink in hand or a good book. Opposite the salon to starboard is the U-shaped settee with large table. The dinette can easily seat six - even more with the addition of a few folding chairs. Outboard is a large shelf with stainless fiddle/grab rail. At the aft end of the stateroom is the companionway to the main cockpit and the passageway to the aft staterooms. Both the starboard table and salon table are beautifully crafted of hand hewn hardwood.

Two steps lead down to the passageway aft. There are nearly identical guest staterooms to port and starboard. The starboard guest stateroom has two berths, a raised pilot berth above and bunk below. Below the pilot berth are two large drawers. There are reading lamps at the head of each berth. At the forward inboard end of the cabin is a tall hanging locker. Adjacent is a locker with shelves. There is a bookshelf below. At the aft inboard end is a bureau of four drawers with a shelf above. Two opening ports, an opening hatch and fixed port give exceptional light and ventilation. A sliding door provides access from the passageway.

The port guest stateroom has two berths, a raised pilot berth above and bunk below. Below the pilot berth are two large lockers. There are reading lamps at the head of each berth. At the forward inboard end of the cabin is a tall hanging locker. Adjacent is a locker with shelves. There is a bookshelf below. At the aft inboard end is a series of three cubbies. is The space is completed with a sliding door to the passageway, two opening ports, an opening hatch and fixed port for exceptional light and ventilation.

The navigation and radio room is aft down the passageway to port. A separate companionway leading to the forward cockpit and large opening port to the aft cockpit creates good ventilation and allows the navigator to communicate easily with those on deck. Outboard is a large L-shaped nav table with plenty of room to stretch out charts and guidebooks. The circular navigator's seat swings out from below the table. Below the table there is fantastic storage for files and charts. At the forward end there are two large file drawers. Just aft is a long shallow drawer that will easily fit a number of chart books. Below the counter at the aft end are two more large shallow drawers for charts and a large locker with shelves. All instrumentation is mounted on the outboard bulkhead. The Furuno radar/chartplotter, Robertson autopilot, Ocean PC display, B&G FFD display, VHF and SSB radios are all within easy reach. The keyboard for the PC is recessed into the counter and covered by a Lexan panel. There is a chart spotlight, three overhead lights and a deck prism.

The aft head is adjacent to the navigation center across the passageway to starboard. The head is finished in white laminate with mahogany trim and a teak and holly sole. At the inboard aft end is the forward facing Vacuflush head. Outboard along the aft bulkhead is a granite counter with stainless sink and single lever faucet. There is a large locker with two shelves below. Above are two mirrored cabinets. Outboard along the hull side there is a large cubby locker with two lockers adjacent and forward. Above, a shelf stretches the length of the compartment along the hull side. Forward is a fixed hull side port with a mirror mounted aft. There is a locker at the forward end of the shelf. There are two 110v AC outlets. At the forward inboard end of the compartment is a separate shower stall with fixed door. There is a removable shower wand and a teak grate covers the shower sump. An overhead fan provides ventilation. Adjacent to the head outboard is a stack type washer/dryer.

The spacious aft stateroom provides comfortable sleeping arrangements for three in two berths. A separate companionway leads to the aft cockpit. Four fixed ports provide light and good views outside. To port is the larger of the two aft berths. There is a reading lamp at the head of the berth. There are two drawers and two lockers below the berth. Forward of the berth is a tall vented hanging locker with drawer and smaller vented hanging locker below. There is a shelf outboard of the berth. At the foot there is a cleverly arranged flat screen television that folds down into its own compartment. Outboard is a large bookshelf. At the aft end of the cabin there is a comfortable settee that is an ideal place to relax and read a book or to sit while donning foul weather gear in rough seas. A reading lamp is mounted overhead. To starboard is a smaller single berth with reading lamp overhead. There is a large drawer and locker below. Two vented lockers and a shelf above at the forward end of the berth provide additional storage. Three overhead lights illuminate the cabin.

Deck and Hull

ATALANTA was built in aluminum by the German yard of Abeking and Rasmussen. Designed by William Tripp in 1967 with the goal of winning line honors in any ocean race she entered, she was highly successful on the world wide ocean racing circuit as ONDINE III under the ownership of Sumner "Huey" Long. Line honors at Newport to Bermuda and the Sydney Hobart are just a snapshot of her racing exploits. At the time she was launched, ATALANTA was the pinnacle of racing technology, yet she was stoutly built - her owner insisted on having a yacht that was capable of sailing on her own bottom to the start of any race around the world. Her hull is constructed of 5/16" aluminum plate over aluminum frames and 1/2" plate around the keel. The deck is 5/16" aluminum plate with 3/8" aluminum in high load areas. Her underbody configuration is a moderate chord length fin keel with a transom hung rudder that was redesigned by Robert Perry. ATALANTA'S flush deck is easy to move about. The deck is surrounded by a varnished teak toe rail and double lifelines with stainless stanchions. There are boarding gates to port and starboard. Two large foredeck hatches allow for sails and other gear to be easily moved to and from the forepeak. Winches for halyards and sail control lines are located around the mast. Aft of the mast are two Lewmar grinder pedestals linked to the primary winches. Her cockpit is aft of the primary winches and is protected by a canvas dodger. The cockpit seats and sole are teak. Twin companionways allow access to the salon and navigation room. Four hydraulic primary winches are mounted on the cockpit rail. The mainsheet traveler separates the forward cockpit from the aft cockpit and helm station. The wheel is mounted at the forward end of the aft cockpit. A companionway leads from the aft cockpit to the master stateroom. Aft of the mizzen mast there is a large open deck.
