With over 400 examples launched since the first Tornado 38 was launched in 1983, the Tornado 38 hull lines have remained virtually unchanged throughout. With a distinct racing heritage, the Tornado 38 features lines designed to offer incredible performance, high reliability and most importantly, maximum safety even if adverse conditions. The design clearly works, which is why there has been little need to change it. The Flush Deck version is a more recent variation, offering an improved deck profile and more modern interior layout, whilst keeping intact the ‘sound principles’ of functionality and sobriety.

MANUFACTURER’S BACKGROUND:

 

Tornado have the fortune of a great past, a long line of legendary boats for exceptional build quality, proven reliability and excellent performance at sea. Classic, elegant, environmentally friendly with very low fuel consumption. “Open” boats full of charm and prestige.

 

The Tornado shipyard was founded in 1968 by veteran of offshore racing - Carlo Marchiolo. The first boat Tornado era was a Cigarette-inspired 35-foot; immediately attracted the attention of the international world of competition and, a few months after launch in 1969, the hull, with her strong US-inspired lines went on to win the Offshore Class 3 power boat championships.

 

The early seventies were full of other prestigious victories to increase the charm of the Tornado brand. The unforgettable hull "yellow Tornado" will go up on the podium of the prestigious Wills Trophy conducted by one of the main protagonists of the sport in the open sea: Vincenzo Balestrieri. A Gold medalist in athletics in 1940 at age 14, Vincenzo Balestrieri continued his sporting career at sea by winning 28 international competitions and became, like Sam Griffith and Don Aronow, a true legend. His victories at Viareggio-Bastia-Viareggio in 1970 and 1972 in the Trophy of Naples are the years of the legendary "Black Tornado".

 

Using our experience in sporting competition, and combining the comfort and performance of a pleasure boat, the Tornado models were born with racing heritage and classic timeless lines. In 1977 during the Genoa Boat Show, Tom Fexas one of the most brilliant minds of the international yacht design joined with Tornado to inject his design genius with the Tornado Hawk 39, intended for the racing world, the Eleven, the 44 'Express and 45 feet. At the time of his premature death in 2006, there were over 1,000 of his designs afloat around the world.

 

The passion for racing continues to be the driving force of Tornado’s Fiumicino Shipyard, and in 1991, Adriano Panatta aboard a Tornado 38 won the Venice – Montecarlo Offshore race, which he later went on to win again in 1997 aboard a Tornado 45. Panatta believed heavily in the Tornado design ethos stating "The Tornados are very competitive boats, well built in all their parts, with a concept that focuses on marine quality as well as the power."

 

In 2007 in the ownership and management of Tornado’s Fiumicino shipyard was taken over by the Rome-based businessman Michele Prestipino. The new management commitment is reflected in the "makeover" of the models that brought forward so much sporting and commercial success over the past 40 years. In 2016, the company begins a new course with Daniel Parisi, a third generation shipwright.

 

CONSTRUCTION

 

RCD Status:

  • The yacht conforms with the essential safety requirements of Directive 94/25EC (Recreational Craft Directive) – Cat. B.

 

Hull, Deck & Superstructure Construction:

  • The hull is made solid laminate with the use of mats, biaxial mat and fabrics which, as known, contribute to greater structural rigidity.
  • The reinforcing structure is constituted by a network of floor timbers and spars marine plywood, appropriately laminated to the hull.
  • The deck is sandwich lamination with a core of PVC.
  • The areas most subject to stresses, such as the toerail area where are fixed bollards and any rails are reinforced marine plywood.
  • Isophthalic resins are used a proper protection against osmosis.

  • Stainless steel rubbing strake
