This Open 40 was designed by Rob and Tom Humphreys, built by Ocean - tec in Slovenia and launched in October 2008. She is based in her cradle at Hamble Yacht Services, near Southampton but currently in a marina in Antigua following the R du R.The boat has full UK ship registration and a current 2010 Class 40 measurement certificate. Orca has maximum beam and righting moment under the Class 40 rule ( 320 kg/ metres) and Class 40 displacement of around 4650 Kgs. Not currently Cat 0 but because of configuration of interior easy to add required bulkhead. Also, the boat has good crusing accommodation and a cockpit well suited to crewed Caribbean sailing. Structural analysis was provided by ASTA of Hamble. The construction is foam -epoxy, with a steel fin and lead keel provided by Irons Brothers of Cornwall. Finished 33 rd out of 44 in Class 40 in the Route du Rhum. Placed in the 20s in fleet until end of second week when wind instruments lost. Finished 5 th Class 40 out of 9 starters in 2010 two- handed Round Britain Race , 13 hours behind the first boat after over 2000 miles of racing ( we lost some time with tidal gates and light winds) , including a Force 9 with 7 to 8 metre seas off the south east of the Shetlands. Boat for boat performance showed Orca to be competitive and exceptionally quick ( in the small amount we had of) reaching The boat won the Class 40 division in the 2009 Round the Island race and was 9 th Class 40 out of 19 in last year's Fastnet . We ( Tom Humphreys and me) showed good boat speed and were mid fleet in the Class 40 race to the Azores in 2009 before losing the big spi and breaking the main halyard.
