I have had the privilage to sail on LIONESSA in the Caribbean, racing around Virgin Gorda and competing against three other Swan 66s in a friendly race. LIONESSA came out on top during this race. I was also on board when she was demonstarted to the press and various select clients in the Newport, RI area. A video of LIONESSA may also be found on You Tube. I can therefore testify first hand the fine sailing characteristics as well as the attention to detail LIONESSA has received all her life. The captain of LIONESSA followed her construction very closely ensuring all the details were properly attended to and adjustments in her build were made to satisfy the demands of her owners. The Hull is of an E-Glass/Polyester laminate with a vinylester skincoat. Built in a female mould using the latest vacuum moulding technology for precision, the bottom laminate from the waterline down is monolithic for impact resistance whilst the topsides are of a foam cored sandwich construction containing a high proportion of unidirectional fibre in the laminate stack for strength and fatigue resistance.
Longitudinal stringers are glass/carbon lay-ups over pre-made hollow sections. Longitudinal girders and transverse keel girders are L section in a glass/carbon lay-up with Main Shroud and split backstay chainplates of a carbon composite construction bonded to the inner skin.
Structural bulkheads are of infused carbon/vinylester foam sandwich construction. Watertight collision bulkheads are installed between the forepeak and forward head, and the aft cabin and lazarette.
Engine bed is built in GRP with steel backing plates and bonded to the inner skin in such a way to form a drip tray under the engine to prevent oil and diesel from contaminating the bilge.
A separate airtight locker for 2 x 6kg LPG bottles is located in the lazarette. It is accessed via the port deck locker and vented overboard.
All through-hull fittings below the waterline are bronze, with good access for opening/closing and maintenance. Wooden bungs of the correct size are secured with to each through-hull fitting for emergency use.
Two tinted hull windows of toughened laminated glass are bonded into the hull on each side of the main saloon and lend a light, airy feel to the interior. Equipped with retractable blinds for privacy in harbour.
Hull finish is Gelcoat NGA 9650 white; with bootline, cove stripe and coaming stripe finished in dark blue gelcoat NGA 7433. Below the waterline is finished with 2 coats of Black International Micron 66 antifoul. To help combat the increased levels of fouling likely to occur along a yachts waterline, 2 extra coats of antifoul have been applied from the waterline to a depth of 1m.
The Keel is an L-type lead casting alloyed with Antimony and bolted to the monolithic keel stub integral to the hull. Keel bolts are high tensile steel. Draft is 10'6".
The Rudder is built using carbon fibre/epoxy skins laminated over a foam core, with a tubular carbon fibre stock. A weed deflector is mounted forward of the rudder and the rudder is supported by dual JP3 supplied self aligning bearings with dual seals on the lower bearing to help prevent leakage.
Dual 1.05m diameter carbon fibre steering wheels by Exit Engineering are mounted independently port and starboard on custom-built composite pedestals incorporating sealed roller bearings. A friction brake is installed on the starboard pedestal to lock the rudder/wheels in place. Steering wheels are linked by a combination of chain and wire via JP3 anti-jam steering sheaves to an aluminium steering quadrant bolted to the rudderstock. Steering wheel rims are covered in grey marine grade leather. An emergency steering tiller is stored in the lazarette. It attaches directly to the rudderstock and can be operated from the aft cockpit via a JP3 through-deck fitting.
TRANSOM DOOR/BATHING PLATFORM
The transom door doubles as a bathing/boarding platform and has a 9mm teak surface on the topside. Two custom-built stainless steel rams, operated via push button controls in the aft cockpit or wireless key fobs from the dock hydraulically open and close it. A pneumatic seal and associated 24v air compressor seal the door when closed. Deck fittings are installed for fitting of ladders allowing access to both deck and water from the platform. A custom-built bow roller to facilitate the loading and unloading of the tender from the lazarette locates in the same deck fittings. A freshwater showerhead with 3m flexible hose is stowed on a reel in the lazarette. A dark blue canvas transom cover is supplied.
The deck is an infusion moulded carbon/glass sandwich structure with a foam core. High density foam core or solid laminate is used under deck fittings. Deck beams of carbon/glass lay-ups over a foam core are used to stiffen the deck.
Laid teak of 65mm width and nominal thickness of 9mm is glued and vacuum bagged on side decks, coach roof, forward cockpit sole, aft cockpit sole and seating areas. The hatches for the anchor locker, sail locker and lazarette are finished in teak and sit flush with the deck. A pair of removable teak footrests for the helmsman are located one each port and starboard.
Coamings and coach roof are finished in white gelcoat NGA 9650 to match the hull, and coaming stripe finished in dark blue gelcoat NGA 7344 to match the bootline/cove stripe.
An aluminium mast collar is integral to the deck and designed for use with Spartite mast support and sealant. Tie rods link the mast collar and mast step to counter compression loads on the deck structure.
HATCHES, PORTHOLES & COMPANIONWAYS
There are deck hatches leading to all cabin spaces and living areas. Deck hatches are Nautor custom made and flush mounted, with tinted acryic glass and teak surround. Gutters and frames are carbon composite and painted white. All hatches are supported by stainless steel gas struts and equipped with combination roller blinds and mosquito screens.
The hatch for the forepeak/crew cabin is 60cm x 60cm instead of the standard size 50cm x 39cm, and is lockable from the inside. Both the crew cabin hatch and main saloon hatch are equipped with dark blue canvas wind scoops.
The lockable main companionway has a manually operated sliding hatch and dropboard of tinted acrylic glass. An additional aft companionway gives access to the master cabin. It is built using a Nautor custom made flush fitting hatch of tempered glass with teak surround supported by stainless steel gas struts, and a white acrylic dropboard. Both companionways are equipped with mosquito screens for the dropboards and the aft with a suction blind for the hatch.
Four Goiot Cristal 40-24R tinted acrylic opening portholes are flush mounted in the coaming with anodized aluminium frames. One opens into the galley area, one into the master cabin bathroom and two into the master cabin itself. All equipped with mosquito screens and retractable blinds

Two decklights with tinted acrylic glass are flush mounted in the deck above the master cabin and equipped with suction blinds.
COCKPITS, SPRAYHOODS & SUN AWNINGS
The deck has a two cockpit arrangement. The forward cockpit has a removable varnished teak dining table with folding leaves. The table is installed on telescopic supports and can be manually recessed flush with seat level. A padded table cover doubles as a stowage bag when table is removed.
There are dark blue cockpit cushions with backrests for the seating area. The entire forward cockpit upto the mainsheet traveller can be converted into a large and secure sunbathing area with the addition of extra cushions, including one to cover the cockpit table in its down position. (see picture below)
The forward cockpit has a large sprayhood to cover the main companionway. Consisting of a stainless steel frame with dark blue canvas cover and leather trailing edge, it folds away into a deck recess with integrated stowage cover. A pair of dark blue canvas bags for halyard tails can be mounted to both the sprayhood frame and/or main companionway grabrails.
A removable sun awning of white canvas with integrated side screens locates in tracks either side of the boom and is tensioned using the running backstays and halyards. The sun awning provides sun/rain protection from the mast to the aft cockpit and can be rolled away and left on the boom whilst sailing.
The aft cockpit is an open style but has removable aft bench seats behind the steering wheels. The centre seat is hinged for access to the lazerette, bathing platform and passerelle. Padded canvas bags are provided for stowage of the seats when removed.
There are two integrated lockers for liferaft stowage in the fixed seats situated forward of the steering pedestals. Cushions with headrests for fixed seats. Stainless steel cup/can holders are mounted on the outboard ends of each pedestal.
A sprayhood to cover the aft companionway and provide protection for the helm is positioned between the inner coamings just aft of the mainsheet traveller. A stainless steel frame supports a dark blue canvas cover with leather trailing edge and it folds away onto a teak base with integrated stowage cover.
A bimini provides sun protection for the aft cockpit and helm. A stainless steel frame with white canvas cover is secured with webbing straps. The bimini is secured to the deck on Harken track to allow adjustment and the frame can be folded away to rest on the backstays or across the aft deck. A dark blue canvas cover protects the bimini cover when folded away. The frame can be broken down into 5 pieces for stowage in the lazerette.
There are Dark Blue canvas covers for the steering wheels and pedestals. A removable dark blue canvas bag fits under the aft companionway entrance for main sheet/genoa sheet/gennaker sheet/running backstay tails.
All sheet/halyard winches are Harken aluminium electric (24v) self tailing. Anodized black finish.

Lifelines, stanchions, pulpit and pushpit spacing conforms to ISAF requirements. Upper lifeline is 8mm and lower lifeline is 5mm stainless wire with polished stainless turnbuckles and eyes. There are gates in the lifelines on each side amidships. The pulpit, pushpit and stanchions are 32mm OD machine polished stainless steel and 610mm high. The pulpit is open type to allow access to bow padeyes and location of anchor arm. The pushpit is split port and starboard with three 5mm stainless wire lifelines linking them together and enclosing the open style aft cockpit. These aft lifelines are removable to allow access to bathing platform. There is a stainless steel flagpole socket incorporated into the port pushpit.
NAVIGATION & DECK LIGHTS
Navigation and deck lights are all 12V-24V DC and are primarily LED type with the exception of the Foredeck floodlight and Spreader lights. Circuit breakers are on the main switchboard at the chart table and local push button controls are mounted in a custom made panel in the aft cockpit. The yacht is equipped with:

ANCHORING & MOORING
A stainless steel retractable anchor arm, supported by a manually operated stainless steel gas piston is located under deck in a dedicated anchor locker. When deployed, it is secured at the bow in a Harken C7389 deck cup using a custom made screw in lock pin. The primary anchor is a galvanized 75 lb CQR type with 80m of 12mm hi-tensile galvanized chain. The chain is housed in a cylindrical self-flaking chain locker and the anchor is raised and lowered using a Lewmar V6 electric anchor windlass installed in the anchor locker and operated via controls on a wandering lead.
A Fortress FX85 serves as a secondary anchor and is stowed in a padded bag in the sail locker. 10m of 10mm chain in a padded bag and 50m of black 24mm plaited line serve as the secondary anchor warp. The 50m line also serves as a towline if required.
There are four 20mm x 15m plaited mooring lines and two 20mm x 20m plaited mooring lines.
Eight pop-up stainless steel mooring cleats by Olcese Ricci are situated: two 400mm x 100mm at bow, two 400mm x 100mm at stern, two 300mm x 70mm forward of midships gates and two 300mm x 70mm aft of midships gates.
Nautor custom fairleads are integrated into pulpit and pushpit, and one additional pair of stainless steel curved aft fairleads with integrated rollers are mounted under the pushpit on the aft extremities of the side decks. There is also an additional screw in custom fairlead for the bow with protective stainless bow plate.
Twelve Avon inflatable fenders with navy blue Fendress fender socks. Eight Large and four medium.
One anodized aluminium foldable boat hook is stowed in anchor locker.
BOARDING LADDERS & PASSARELLE
One swim ladder for use at bathing platform.
One side boarding ladder for use both sides amidships.
One ladder extension for use with both swim and side boarding ladders. Also used as ladder for entering sail locker.
One ladder to allow access to the bathing platform from deck.
All ladders are stowed in sail locker on custom made brackets.
There are flush mounted deck fittings for the ladders located amidships, on the aft deck and on the swim platform. All ladders have been retro-fitted with spring loaded levers that locate in the deck fittings and lock them in place.
3.2m carbon fibre passerelle by Multiplex with teak planking. White painted finish with dark blue stripe to match hull. Carbon stanchions and carbon halyard spreader bar have been clear coated for durability. Aluminium male deckplate upgraded to stainless. Female deck fitting installed on aft deck. Harken 2:1 jumpers and padded stowage bag.
Carefully selected light teak is varnished and hand rubbed to give a satin finish for all visible woodwork. Removable overhead panels are installed in all accommodation areas and finished in white vinyl.
All floorboards are lightweight PVC sandwich construction with grooved Bamboo veneer. They are treated with several coats of hard wearing two-pack satin varnish and mounted on vibration damping material. Suction lifters are provided for each cabin.
Interior bulkheads and panels are foam cored sandwich construction with teak veneers on marine ply skins. All partitions are built to meet 20dB (A) level of airborne noise reduction. Locker doors are fitted with high quality hinges and latches and hanging lockers are fitted with rails, hooks and automatic internal lights.
General cabin lighting is spotlight down lighting with dimmer controls for the main saloon. Reading lights are installed at the head of every berth, nav station and crew cabin desk. Red night lights are installed in main saloon and galley, and an additional one with on/off switch installed in the aft cabin. Nav station and crew cabin desk lights are dual white/red. An oilskin locker with ventilation and driptray is installed aft of the nav station in the aft passageway.
All drawers are made of teak with top quality latches. Mirrors are marine quality with sealed edges. Companionway ladders have non-slip steps and are supplied with padded heavy duty covers for heavy use. All berths have white canvas leecloths secured to stainless fittings in bulkheads and bed frame.
Mattresses for fixed berths are sprung type manufactured for marine use from fire retardent material and include foam cover mattresses. Bases are Deltaflex type batten system providing underside ventilation. Pullman berths have fire retardent foam mattresses. All mattresses and cover mattresses are finished in Annala Calico No.18 (cream) with piping in Annala Calico No.35 (beige) and are supplied with quilted fitted mattress covers.
Bathrooms/heads have white GRP counter tops with Corian basins and soap dispensers. Shower stalls are white GRP with teak floor grating and white shower curtains where specified. Aft cabin shower stall has tempered glass door with stainless steel fittings.
FORWARD CABIN (Crew Cabin)
Large single berth on port side with drawers underneath. Pullman berth above with hidden lockers behind. Chart table with under-lid storage on starboard side with two small lockers underneath. One locker with twin sliding doors at desk level and 3 large lockers with shelves above. Swing out stool at chart table.
Three large drawers located aft of chart table. Lower two drawers have been converted to hold a WiFi enabled all-in-one printer-scanner-copier on sliding base with small drawer to hold ink,paper etc. Large hanging locker next to cabin door. Teak step on forward bulkhead enables entrance/exit through 60cm x 60cm deck hatch.
Ensuite bathroom with washbasin and integrated shower controls, soap dispenser, shower curtain, towel hooks and toilet brush holder. Jabsco manual toilet with salt/fresh water flushing with storage lockers below washbasin and mirrored storage lockers above. Bathroom has its own 36cm x 25cm deck hatch.
STARBOARD MIDSHIPS CABIN (Guest)
Large single berth to starboard with drawers underneath. Pullman berth above with concealed lockers behind. Large hanging locker with small storage locker below. Full height locker in midships partition with four shelves. Two 36 x 25 cm deck hatches allow natural light and ventilation. Ensuite bathroom with Tecma Silence Plus electric toilet, Corian washbasin and integrated shower controls and soap dispenser. Toilet brush holder and towel hooks with storage locker below washbasin and mirrored storage lockers above. Bathroom has its own 36 x 25 cm deck hatch. An additional door amidships gives access to the port midships cabin shower cubicle, leaving the dayhead dry for regular use.
Queen sized double bed with drawers underneath and lockers above. Bedside table with drawer and storage space below. This bed has a central leeboard to convert the bed into two singles.
Large hanging locker with small storage locker below. Full height hanging locker in midships partition allows hanging of dresses, overcoats etc. Two 36 x 25 cm deck hatches allow natural light and ventilation.

Dining for six persons on port side, with L shaped sofa outboard and large rectangular dining table with two custom made teak chairs inboard. Coffee table with integral book storage on starboard side in front of settee.
Storage lockers on both sides of main saloon above sofas. Additional storage under sofas. Raritan Icemaker located in cabinet with shelf on port forward bulkhead. Overhead hand rail on ceiling centreline. A two shelf nautor built bookshelf has been added to the starboard forward bulkhead.
All sofa cushions and chair seats are finished in cream leather and a set of dust covers in Sunbrella interior fabric is supplied for the sofas, chairs, dining table and coffee table. A concealed bar locker to hold 10 bottles is located under a lid in the unit behind the starboard sofa. Wine bottle socks are provided for stowage of bottles under the sofas.
The navigation station is located on the aft starboard side of the main saloon and faces outboard. A teak chart table with raised facia houses all the navigation and communications electronics and has a shallow storage space located underneath the table top. A third custom made teak chair provides seating. All chairs can be screwed down for sailing.
The galley adjoins main saloon on the portside. All lockers are teak with the worktops, fiddles, backsplash and sliding locker doors in Corian, cameo white. A dual sink combo on the inboard worktop has hot/cold fresh water, drinking water via charcoal filter, Quooker instant boiling water and a soap dispenser.
A gimbaled four burner gas stove with oven is located in the outboard worktop. The stove is fed by regulator via a solenoid and in-line isolation valve with on/off controls in the galley. A dual sensor gas detector provides warning of leaks both in the galley and the galley bilge. An extractor fan venting out aft, and a Miele microwave are located outboard in the panel above the oven.
Two 125lt refrigerators are located aft, facing forward and a 126lt top loading freezer is located in the outboard worktop.
The aft cabin has been custom designed different from standard with the addition of a removable bulkhead splitting the cabin in two, allowing the sofa to be separated from the main cabin. The sofa has been converted into bunk beds and effectively becomes a small fifth cabin giving a total of eight guest berths instead of the usual six. The sofa cabin is to starboard and has lockers outboard of the upper bunk, under the lower bunk and two large lockers on the aft bulkhead, one facing forward and one facing outboard. Additional air conditioning controls and light switches make this cabin truly independent.
The main aft cabin has a double bed on the port side with drawers underneath and lockers above. Two large lockers on the aft bulkhead; one facing forward with sliding doors and one facing outboard which houses a safe suitable in size to store a handheld VHF and/or GPS. A large hanging locker is located at the head of the bed and faces inboard. An aft companionway gives immediate access to the aft cockpit and a teak ladder is installed atop the aft lockers to facilitate entrance and exit.
Ensuite bathroom shared by both aft cabins has a Tecma Silence Plus electric toilet, corian washbasin, soap dispenser, toilet brush holder and towel hooks. Storage locker below washbasin and mirrored storage lockers above. Separate shower stall with tempered glass dividing door and teak grating.
ENGINE AND SYSTEMS
The engine room is located on the centreline and aft of the main saloon, directly below the forward cockpit. It is internally sound insulated and lined with white painted aluminium panels. All machinery is mounted on noise and vibration reducing material and painted white. Main access is through dedicated door located in aft passageway on starboard side. Door is also sound insulated. Secondary access to the generator is possible via the main companionway steps which can be raised, and to the front of the main engine via a removable panel in the aft cabin. Engine room contains main engine, generator, exhaust gas/water seperators, central air conditioning compressors and circulation pump, watermaker high pressure pump and filters and main electrical circuit breakers. Lighting by flourescent lights. A reverso oil transfer pump facilitates fast oil changes with no mess and a thermostatically controlled fan vents warm air to atmosphere to maintain optimum temperature in engine room.
The main engine is a STEYR MO166M28 six cylinder turbo diesel developing 120kW / 163HP at 2800rpm. Engine controls are located in aft cockpit coaming next to Starboard pedestal. Both the engine and reduction gear are supported on flexible noise and vibration deadening mounts. The gearbox is a ZF 63 IV 2.48:1 direct mounted hydraulic reverse/reduction gearbox. The propeller shaft is made from hi-tensile corrosion resistant steel mounted on a flexible shaft coupling, passing through a drip free seal and supported by rubber cutlass bearings at stern tube and P bracket. The folding propeller is a corrosion resistant nickel-aluminium-bronze alloy four bladed Brunton Varifold. Engine cooling is by freshwater and thermostatically controlled. Professionally serviced by official Steyr service agent annually.
There is one 11.9 kVA Fischer Panda 14000 NE PMS generator producing single phase 230V 50Hz AC. Located at the front of the engine room, it is mounted inside a proprietary sound shield on vibration/noise deadening feet. (See Electrical Systems) Professionally serviced by official Fischer Panda service agent annually.
Halyard super silencing wet exhaust system for both main engine and generator. Gas/water seperators discharge cooling water below the waterline and exhaust gases exit under transom. Silencers are provided with a drain tap and are supported on vibration dampening brackets.
Fuel capacity 1300 lt in three baffled and vented stainless steel tanks. Two x 400 lt and one x 500 lt located under main saloon floor. All tanks are equipped with fuel level indicators linked to a guage on the main panel. Inspection hatches allow periodic inspection and cleaning. A fuel valve chest is fitted with shut off valves and supply/return lines for each tank. There are three Separ 2000 in-line fuel filters with water seperators for the main engine and generator. One for the generator and two for the main engine.
FIRE FIGHTING SYSTEM
There is a clean agent (FM200) remotely activated fire extinguishing system for the engine room with an optical smoke alarm on the engine room overhead giving early warning via waterproof piezo buzzers in the main saloon and aft cockpit. In addition, there is one portable fire hose reel of 20m located in the anchor locker and two saltwater fed hydrants, one located forward in the anchor locker and one located aft in the lazzarette. The hydrants are supplied by a 24V electrical fire pump located in main saloon bilge. Portable fire extinguishers are located in every cabin and marked on a laminated fireplan. 2kg dry powder ABC extinguishers in all guest cabins, main saloon and lazzarette (5 pcs) and 2kg AFFF in crew cabin and galley (2 pcs). A fire blanket is also located in the galley.
The bowthruster is a retractable Maxpower VIP 250 HYD located in the forepeak, with its own battery bank and charger located in the crew cabin. Bowthruster on/off and up/down pushbutton controls are located on the starboard pedestal in the aft cockpit and operated via port/starboard foot controls deck mounted under starboard steering wheel.
A central 24V Bosch-Rexroth powerpack is located in the lazzarette on flexible mounts to minimise noise and vibration. It supplies satellite valve groups located close to the operating units. This reduces inherent hydraulic noise and vibration in the living spaces, maximises hydraulic power output and uses minimal electrical power. The powered hydraulic functions are; Backstay tension, Outhaul tension, Boom vang up/down, Jib halyard tension, Inner forestay tension, Jib furler in/out and transom door open/close, all operated via pushbuttons on the port pedestal in the aft cockpit. A manual back up system is installed on the powerpack, and accessible via the starboard deck locker.
There is a small low pressure 24V electric compressor located in the lazzarette to supply air for the pneumatic transom door seal. A manual inflate/deflate valve is mounted on the lazzarette overhead and accessible from the lazzarette hatch.
PLUMBING AND VENTILATION
FRESH WATER SYSTEM
All fresh water pipes are polypropylene, nylon or copper tubing. A pressurised hot and cold water system is installed with an 18 litre pressure accumulator tank connected. The system is run by two 24V pressure activated progressive pumps for quiet operation. A 75lt stainless steel hot water tank/water heater is thermostatically controlled and can heat water with a heating elelment running off AC power or from a seperate heat exchanger on the main engine which heats the hot water circuit whenever the engine is running. Hot water tank is equipped with non return valve to prevent back mixing and a pressure relief valve to prevent over-pressure. A thermostat mixing valve is installed to regulate hot water temperature in the system. All hot water pipes are insulated. The system is supplied from a 500lt baffled and vented stainless steel tank located under the floor in the main saloon. The tank can be filled either via the dedicated deck fill whilst in harbour or from the watermaker whilst out at sea. A guage on the main panel displays water level. The system supplies water to all washbasins, sinks, showers and there is one fresh water outlet on deck in the anchor locker. In addition, the system provides charcoal filtered fresh water to a dedicated drinking water outlet in the galley and also to the icemaker.
The watermaker is a Spectra Newport 700. Rated output approximately 100lt/hr depending on water quality and conditions. The unit is 24V and includes an in-line salinity test probe which automatically switches the product flow from overboard to tank once a satidfactory salinity level is reached. The unit is also equipped with an automatic fresh water flush system which rinses the unit through every five days if unused. A remote control panel fitted at the nav station monitors the system and push button controls can start and stop the system automatically. In addition, a Spectra Z-Brane electronic water treatment system is fitted preventing the build up of bio-slime and organic growth in the membrane housings by electrostatically positively charging water molecules so they cannot bond to each other. This virtually negates the need for cleaning or storing with harsh chemicals unless the system is shut down for prolonged periods and so prolongs the life of the membranes and the overall efficiency of the watermaker.
SEA WATER SYSTEM
There are bronze seacocks for all through-hull connections below the waterline all located in accessible positions. The inboard side of all seacocks is fitted with a spigot long enough to take twin hose clamps. All seawater pipes are reinforced rubber hose or nylon piping.
GREY WATER SYSTEM
Grey water from sinks, basins, showers, air conditioning drip trays, refrigeration drip trays, dishwasher and washer/dryer are transferred to a 210lt baffled and vented stainless steel grey water holding tank by Sanisplit transfer pumps. The tank is fitted with a level switch indicating ¾ full (high) and full with lights on the main panel. Tank ventilation equipped with saniguard vent filter to prevent odors. The grey water tank is emptied by a 24V pump, fitted within the tank, to seacock via siphon break. The pump has three settings; Off, Manual and Auto. When auto is selected, the tank will empty itself when the high level is reached.
BLACK WATER SYSTEM
All toilets are connected to a 210lt stainless steel baffled and vented black water holding tank. The tank is fitted with a level switch indicating ¾ full (high) and full, with lights on the main panel. Tank ventilation equipped with saniguard vent filter to prevent odors. The black water tank is emptied by a 24V pump, fitted within the tank, to seacock via siphon break. The tank can also be emptied by suction line from a dedicated deck outlet when in harbour.
Toilets in guest cabins are Tecma silence plus 24V. Flushing is by freshwater from the pressurised cold water system. Consumption per flush approx 2.5lt. Operation is by touch button controls located in each bathroom and the function cycle is completely automatic. A high performance macerator pump installed in each toilet enables the complete fragmentation of organic residues and transfer of waste to the black water holding tank. The full level switch in the black water tank automatically shuts down power to the toilets when the tank reaches the full level. A manual Jabsco toilet is installed in the crew cabin with facility for Fresh water and sea water flushing, and can also be emptied to the black tank when in harbour or straight overboard when far enough out at sea.
BILGE PUMP SYSTEM
There are 3 separate bilges; Forepeak, Main and Lazarette. Each bilge is equipped with a 24V submersible pump rated at 140l/min. There are two whale titan manual backup pumps rated at 100l/min. One located in Crew cabin which empties the forepeak and main bilge (and also the chain locker) and one in the aft cockpit which empties the lazarette and main bilge. A separate bilge drain system uses whale gulper pumps to keep bilges dry in everyday use. Bilge pump run light on starboard pedestal.
A Webasto Blue Cool Premium 40,000BTU central air conditioning system for cooling and reverse cycle heating is installed in the engine room on flexible mounts.. Remote blowers are fitted in all cabins and living spaces and linked to the central unit by a chilled/heated water circuit. All blowers are controlled by electronic panels in each cabin. The chilled/heated water circuit is fully insulated to prevent condensation in the bilges and cabins and all blower units are fitted with drip trays that drain into sanisplit grey water transfer pumps and collected in the grey water holding tank. The system is designed to operate and cope with Mediterranean and Caribbean climate conditions. An additional Webasto diesel water heater is fitted in the lazarette which can be used to heat the chilled/heated water circuit when sea temperature is below what the reverse cycle can cope with.
A forced air ventilation system is installed directing fresh air into cabins and bilges, and stale air out of bathrooms. Silencers are installed to reduce noise. The galley extractor fan has its own duct exiting in the aft cockpit coaming.
There are 3 thermostatically controlled Isotherm 24V Compact Magnum refrigeration cooling units custom mounted on drip trays in the galley bilge. Two for the fridges and one for the freezer. The drip trays drain into the grey water holding tank via sanisplit grey water transfer pumps. Unit cooling is by sea water via main sea chest and refrigeration valve chest. Cooling water is discharged below waterline. Refrigeration temperatures are set by electronic control panels installed above the fridges, and by thermostat in the freezer.
AC and DC control and monitoring instruments are on main panel at Nav station. Wires are sized to minimise voltage drop and all cables are labelled with identification numbers at each end. Comprehensive electrical drawings are provided with the boat showing locations of junction boxes, installations etc. All battery bank boxes are secured to hull, have temperature sensors fitted and are vented to the mast. The Propeller shaft, propeller, bowthruster, main engine, refrigeration compressors and generator have sacrificial zinc anodes installed, and the mast and shrouds are grounded to the keel via a lightning conductor at the masthead.
A 2-pole 24v insulated return DC system is installed for general lighting, pumps, blowers and electronics etc. There are four battery banks; Service, Radio, Bowthruster and Start. Batteries are maintenance free gel-cell. Service and Radio batteries are 24V and consist of twelve 2V cells in series. Bowthruster batteries producing 24V consist of two pairs of Optima 12V 50A batteries in series and connected in parallel. Start batteries for the Main engine and Generator are single 12V 50Ah Optima Red Tops.
The Service battery bank is 600Ah/5h / 720Ah/20h and powers all the domestic DC consumers such as lights, pumps, blowers. This bank also powers certain single phase AC consumers via a Mastervolt Mass Sine 24/1500 VA 230V inverter such as the microwave, entertainment system and 220V power sockets. The Radio battery bank is 240Ah/5h / 290Ah/20h and powers all the electronic DC consumers such as the B&G and Furuno systems. This battery bank also powers a Mastervolt Mass Sine 24/1500 VA 230V inverter to provide stable power to the electronic AC consumers such as the Computer.
The service battery bank is located in the main saloon on the centerline, the Radio bank in the Starboard Midships cabin on the centerline, the bowthruster bank in the crew cabin on the centerline and the start bank in the aft passageway. Service, Radio and Bowthruster batteries can be charged by a 28V/5Kw (180A) internal Flywheel Generator on the main engine via a splitting diode, or by dedicated battery chargers when connected to 220V AC power. (see AC system) The start batteries are charged by a 14V/90A alternator on the main engine and a 12V DC alternator on the generator respectively, and a battery parallel switch can link both batteries for starting if either one should fall flat.
There are Aquasignal waterproof 12V/24V DC outlets at the aft cockpit, the mast, the forepeak and the anchor locker. 12V car charger outlets in every cabin and at nav station.
A 230V 50Hz single phase, three wire, grounded AC system is fed by the diesel generator or shore power inlet, and powers the AC consumers such as Washer/Dryer, Air Conditioning and dishwasher. Smaller AC consumers are powererd by DC-AC inverters (see DC system above) Power switching between shore and generator via controls on main panel.
There are three shore power inlets located in the Lazarette. One 230V 50Hz only 50A inlet for general AC power in Europe, one 230V 50Hz/60Hz 32A inlet for air conditioning AC power only in Europe and USA/Caribbean and one 230V 50Hz/60Hz 32A inlet for general AC power in the USA and Caribbean.
AC SYSTEM cont
All power from ashore is led to isolation transformers; 15kVA for 50Hz only inlet and 7kVA for each of the 50Hz/60Hz inlets.
Shore power cables are connected via a small waterproof hatch in the aft cockpit inner coaming. There are four shore power cables. Two of 20m with Hubbell 50A and CEE style 32A plugs, and two 15m extension cables with 32A CEE style male/female plugs. A selection of 16A–63A adaptors are supplied.
There is one 11.9 kVA Fischer Panda 14000 NE PMS generator producing single phase 230V 50Hz AC. Located at the front of the engine room, it is mounted inside a proprietary sound shield on vibration/noise deadening feet.
There are two Mastervolt Mass 24V 75A three step battery chargers for the Service bank instead of the standard single 24V 100A charger, enabling faster charging in a shorter time.
A single Mastervolt Mass 24V 75A three step battery charger for the Radio bank.
There are 230V outlets in all cabins and living spaces. One outlet in each bathroom, one in each cabin, two in main saloon, two in galley and two at the Nav station. In addition, there are single waterproof outlets in the engine room and lazarette.
There is a comprehensive array of sailing instrumentation and navigation electronics, all carefully selected for their reliability, functionality and compatability.
B&G H3000 SYSTEM
A Brookes & Gatehouse (B&G) H3000 Hercules package forms a base for the overall system. A Halcyon Gyro stabilised compass working via a Halcyon gyro processor provides the heading source for the navigation electronics, autopilot and other instruments requiring accurate heading data. The system also includes a 1450mm vertical masthead unit providing wind data, plus speed sensor, depth sensor, sea temperature sensor and barometric pressure sensor. All this information is fed to the H3000 main processor and distributed to various H3000 displays around the boat.
There are four Graphic Function Displays (GFD); one on the starboard pedestal, one in the aft cabin, one at the Nav station and one in the crew cabin. There are 2 Full Function Displays (FFD) in the aft cockpit and one Graphic Pilot Display (GPD) on the port pedestal for controlling the autopilot. In addition, there are four 30/30 HV displays mounted on the mast in a custom made carbon fibre bracket facing aft. As well as the usual Wind, Speed and Nav data, the GFD’s also display hydraulic pressures for backstay, boom vang, outhaul, jib halyard, inner forestay and forestay length.
A B&G H3000 ACP-2 high performance autopilot system is installed consisting of the GPD on the port pedestal, an ACP-2 pilot computer interfaced with the Halcyon Gyro Processer, a rudder reference unit RRF-ACP and a 24V constant running powerpack driving the steering quadrant via one Rexroth low friction hydraulic cylinder. A B&G remote vision wireless remote control receiver is installed in the aft cabin and handset at chart table.
FURUNO NAVNET VX2 RADAR / CHART PLOTTER SYSTEM
Fully integrated with the B&G system using NMEA, is a Furuno Navnet vx2 radar/chart plotting system consisting of one 1834CBB/NT black box radar/plotter with a 17” LCD monitor at the Nav station. The 24” 4kW radome radar scanner with a range of 36nm is mounted on the front of the mast on a custom made stainless steel bracket. A Furuno Navnet GP-320B GPS/WAAS receiver situated on the pushpit is the main source of accurate position data for the black box, B&G H3000 system and the B&G autopilot system. A Furuno GP-37 DGPS/WAAS navigator with receiver on the pushpit is installed as back up. A changeover switch selects whether navigation data is inputted to the B&G from the Navnet network or the GP-37.
Connected to the black box network by Ethernet cable is a Furuno Fax-30 Weatherfax/Navtex dual frequency receiver, a Furuno FA-50 Class B AIS transponder and two Furuno GP1920C/NT 10.4” GPS plotters situated one on each pedestal on custom brackets (2010). Dark blue canvas covers for the plotters. The chart system for the Furuno Navnet network is C-Map NT MAX in SD card format. There is also an infra-red webcam connected to the Navnet system which monitors the engine room. Its signal can be viewed at the chart table and the starboard pedestal. All plotter diplays are capable of controlling any component connected to the Navnet network.
The main yachts computer is a Dell Optiplex 745 Ultra Small Form Factor (USFF) computer. Located in a vented locker above the chart table it is connected to the same 17” LCD monitor as the Furuno Navnet black box radar/plotter. A VGA changeover switch can select which system is displayed on the screen and a wireless keyboard and mouse is provided.
To complement the Furuno Navnet vx2 system, the computer has Maxsea Navnet software installed and is connected by ethernet to the Navnet network. The addition of a C-Map chart card reader and a change over switch to select either the GP-320B or GP-37 as NMEA input for the maxsea software means the computer can become a complete backup navigation system should the Furuno system fail. Maxsea navnet software includes Navnet Commander, performance module, routing module, AIS/ARPA module and Maxshell.
The yacht also has a wifi enabled local area network. A Linksys WAP54G wireless access point and eight port ethernet router connects the computer to the Inmarsat Fleet 33 transceiver and Sat C Transceiver for Met information, email and web browsing via satellite. Using a wifi adapter, the wifi network allows the computer to print to the wifi enabled all-in-one printer in the crew cabin. The computer is also linked to the entertainment system and digital movies and music can be played from the Computer to the Bose system and TV.
A Thrane & Thrane Fleet 33 provides voice / Fax / Data satellite communications, and a Thrane & Thrane Sailor Sat C provides GMDSS capability using Easymail software on the PC and a dedicated distress button at the chart table.
Terrestrial communications are provided by a Simrad RS-87 DSC VHF. There are handsets in the aft cockpit, aft cabin, nav station and crew cabin with intercom speakers in each midships guest cabin. An external deck speaker in the aft cockpit and a loud hailer on the mast.
A Glomex RA 114 emergency VHF antenna with cable is supplied, and connects directly to transceiver unit. Stored under starboard sofa in main saloon.
A handheld Icom IC-M71 VHF with 12V charger is used for tender and local communications.
The heart of the entertainment system is a Bose Lifestyle 48 home cinema system with 5.1 surround sound and sub woofer in the main saloon. Small cube speakers are mounted discreetly in the overheads, with the subwoofer under the port sofa.
A Loewe Spheros R 26” widescreen LCD TV with built in DVB-T and DVB-C is mounted on a remotely controlled pop up lift system behind the starboard sofa. There is a cable TV inlet in the lazarette and a change over switch at the Nav station to change between terrestrial and cable. It is also possible to view the radar and chart plotter picture on the TV with the aid of a VGA switch at the chart table.
One Bose SA-2 Amplifier and one Bose SA-3 amplifier are connected to the Lifestyle 48 system and power two pairs of waterproof Polyplanar MA-8506 6” 3-way Titanium series speakers. One pair in the aft cockpit and one pair in the forward cockpit. A remote control for the deck speakers controls the music source and volume. An independant volume control for the aft cockpit speakers is located in the deck light switch panel on the port side, and a leather pocket for the remote is located on the port pedestal leg.
MAST AND RIGGING
The mast is an Offshore Spars swept back (25º) three spreader rig with discontinuous shrouds.The mast is constructed in intermediate modulus carbon fibre and painted white. The mainsail track is Antal with a gate at the lower end for an Antal Batten car system. There is a secondary trysail track to port of the mainsail track which continues to deck level for easy bending on of the trysail. Spreaders are Carbon fibre and painted white. The lower spreaders (S1) have two spotlights each, facing down. Two conduits are bonded internally to the mast to both carry and protect instrument cabling and there is a separate internal conduit for battery ventilation. Two pairs of mast steps either side of the mast for access to boom. Mast is keel stepped with spartite mast support and sealant used in the mast collar. A waterproof neoprene boot with dark blue canvas cover is fitted around the deck partners.
The rig is equipped with:
- One Main Halyard sheave for 1:1 hoisting.
- One Utility/Spare Main halyard sheave.
- Two Genoa Halyard sheaves.
- Two Gennaker Halyard Sheaves with option for 2:1 hoist for code 0 on one of them.
- One staysail Halyard sheave.
- Two Lazy Jack turning blocks and spinlock PXR cleats.
- Turning blocks, guides and sheaves for two single line reef lines.
- One sheave for Hydraulic outhaul.
Antennas, radar, foghorns and Satcom domes are fitted in the following locations:
- R&R Delta Biscaya active antenna at the masthead for VHF, Navtex, TV and FM radio.
- Sea-me active radar transponder on masthead.
- Sat C antenna on starboard S2.
- Fleet 33 dome on starboard S1.
- Simrad VHF Loudhailer on inboard end of port S1.
- Marco EW3 24V Foghorn on bracket under radome on front of mast.
- Radome on custom made stainless steel bracket and guard on front of mast.
A carbon fibre park avenue boom, with internal conduits for mainsheet, is painted white and fitted with three dimmable LED spotlights to illuminate the cockpits. Dual Harken tracks, for reef line turning blocks and outhaul car, are fitted aft in the recessed boom deck which is finished in white non slip. There is a lo-profile twin track system installed on the inside perimeter of the boom top for lazy jack attachment, sail cover and sun awning. Harken pad eyes for mainsheet blocks and boom preventer.
Rigging is polished Navtec Nitronic rod and main shroud turnbuckles are barrel pin type. Runners and inner forestay are Navtec Biconic kevlar with polyurethane cover. Forestay foil is Reckmann hardened aluminium with twin groove. Harken padded block socks for runner blocks.
There are Navtec Hydraulic cylinders for inner forestay, Boom Vang, Genoa Halyard, Outhaul and Backstays; plus a Reckman UD3 hydraulic furling unit with manual backup installed under deck at the bow. Enerpac hydraulic mast jacks with lifting bar for mast and manual pump are supplied.

The tender is a white Zodiac Yachtline 310R with Mercury 15HP outboard engine. It has been fitted with a delrin strip on the keel for protection when launching and recovering. A removable bow roller on the swim platform and a 6:1 purchase attached to the lazarette bulkhead aids launching and recovery from/to the lazarette. When stowed the tender is deflated and lies amidships in the lazarette leaving access through the deck hatch clear. The engine lies flat in the bottom of the tender on a custom made bracket. The tender is secured with ratchet straps to padeyes on the lazarette floor.
Two plastic fuel tanks are safely secured in the anchor locker when not in use. A four point lifting harness is supplied for lifting out of the water with a halyard. A manual footpump, small clam anchor with chain and warp, bailer and small repair kit fit in the bow locker.
