I recently spent an afternoon with the owner and builder of this finely built performance voyaging catamaran. Three years ago he set out to design and build what he felt would be the ultimate long distance voyager - a no compromise catamaran that would offer not only comfort at anchor, but safety and performace underway. Working closely with the esteemed multihull designer Lidgard, and a team of skilled Australian craftsmen, they fashioned the Executive 73. In discussing her carefully with her owner, I learned that she was designed to sail consistently, without being pressed too hard, between 11 and 13 knots. She powers between 8 and 12 knots. Rather than make her too fragile and light, he sought to strike a careful balance between strength and weight, using composite sandwhich construction with carbon fibre in high stress areas - including the beams, rudders, and daggerboads. Certainly not a penny was spared to make her as light and strong as possible. This same philosophy carried over into her interior design. A combination of wood and cleanly finished and polished fiberglass walls strikes a nice balance between the overheavy interiors of the current French flybridge monsters, and the overly spare South African models. It is fair to say that the Executive 73 is a luxury high performance cruiser, stopping just a bit short of being a racer cruiser. She sports the full carbon rig, daggerboards, and high tech construction of a racer cruiser, but is fully amenitized with all of the luxury items you find on most of the crewed charter boats. The ideal buyer for her is a serious voyager, a blue water sailor who wants to knock of major miles at high rates of speed in a yacht that is built to take whatever nature can toss at her. She would also be ideal for luxury crewed charter, going after the serious sailing clients who want to experience a real machine, not just a floating bathtub. We will proudly have the Executive 73 on display at the Annapolis Boat Show from October 8th through the 12th. Please visit our display at the boat show and we will organize a showing for you of this very unique and special catamaran. | ||
