Joel White designed the Haven as a centerboard version of the Herreshoff 12 1/2 footers, one of which Joel had owned for nearly half a century. Because he so respected the design, having sailed his SHADOW in all conditions for many years, he set out to mnake the Haven perform exactly like the Herreshoff designed original 12 1/2. With a little more beam and slightly filled-out bilges, Joel's numbers indicated identical stability. Wetted surface remained about the same and the sail plan (gaff or marconi) identical, so it came as no surprize that Joel acheived what he set out to do. The Center Harbor Yacht Club (Brooklin, Maine) intermingles Havens and Herrshoffs with gaff-rigged or marconi sail plans on the race course without a handicap and winning performances are generally split between the two boats proving that with generally identical boats concentration on the race course is the deciding factor. Built by The Landing School in 2006, ROSIE is a splendid example of the Haven 12 1/2 and should be seriously considered by anyone wishing to have a classic daysailor.
