This lovely Island Packet 420 was delivered in July 2005 and was one of the last Island Packet 420s to be built for the European market.
She has had two careful owners from new - the first season was spent cruising locally on the South Coast. In 2006 she was sailed north and spent the next five years cruising in Scotland with the occassional trip to Scandinavia. Here second owner moved her to the Med in 2011 and she is currently berthed in Gibralta after preparations for an ARC crossing in 2015. A car accident and subsequent health problems have frustrated this plan and the owner wishes to consder other leisure options. She is a well maintained and much loved yacht.
The 420 defines the latest generation of Island Packet designs, and embodies a host of proven design and construction features that have evolved over the years of boat-building experience and benefited from the feedback of owners. Deck & Cockpit
The 420 deck and cockpit offers a recessed foredeck with bulwarks, integral bow platform with two SeaSafe anchor rollers (an Island Packet patented design), welded mast rails, premium two-tone diamond pattern slip resistant surfaces, and beautifully molded detail for deck hardware and (dealer/owner) canvas/windshield installations. The cockpit offers contoured seats that accommodate a large crew or invite stretching out. The console mounted helm features rack and pinion steering, providing a combination of reliability, strength and sensitivity unmatched by any other wheel design. Cockpit convenience features abound with standard details such as a built-in insulated beverage locker, two large seat lockers with interior lights, a hand held personal shower (cold only), deep swim ladder with rubber treads, stem rail with central gate and two molded seats, and a console mounted folding table. Safety concerns are equally well met with a captive pin lock for securing companionway drop boards, padeyes for safety harness attachments, a raised companionway bridgedeck, large cockpit scupper drain capacity and self-locking seat locker hatches with gas support struts and push button hasps that operate from inside or out.
'Spirit of Fern' has an electric anchor winch with deck and cockpit controls with approximately 60metres of chain and a 25kg Delta anchor, anchor buddy and snubber. She also carries a 20kg CQR as a kedge.

Island Packet's long term commitment to the cutter rig, paralleling the choice of experienced offshore cruisers and short handed racers world wide, is due to its versatility; ease of use, and excellent performance over a wide range of wind and sea conditions. The 420 improves upon this highly desired sail plan with a free-standing Hoyt" staysail boom, simplifying control and adding significant performance to this highly effective sail.
Standard features such as furling systems on all sails, self-tailing winches, colour coded lines, rope clutches, traveller control lines and coaming line stowage bins with hinged covers make sailing easier and more enjoyable than ever. All line handling winches are Lewmar.

The navigation table with an electrically powered swing out seat should please the most ardent navigator, and includes recessed master electrical distribution panels with numerous spare breakers and ample panel space for dealer/owner installed electronics. A storage tray is provided under the largehinged tabletop, with a locker under and outboard of the table and a chart drawer under the settee immediately forward.

An innovative blend of liveaboard comfort and practical cruising features is evidenced throughout the 420, delivering what are perhaps the best accommodations of any yacht in its size range.
FORECASTLE AND ANCHOR LOCKER
Accessed through a tall door in theshower stall, the lighted forecastle provides a great spot for securing items like fenders and docklines. The bowthruster is accessed from either the forecastle, or through the movable shower seat in the forward head. The large divided anchor locker just forward of this forecastle area will easily accommodate two chain anchor rodes.
Island Packet yachts have long been noted for their exceptionally livable designs,and this private head adjoining the master stateroom will further that reputation. Accessed from the forward end of the master stateroom, it features a sink vanity with cabinets above and below, a deep polished oval stainless steel sink, an overhead hatch, opening ports, medicine chest, plus several lockers and two deep drawers. Extra counter space provides "captain-chair" seating for the toilet, and a separate stall shower enclosure is fitted with afolding acrylic door and built-in seat.
The forward owner's suite is a true delight, with the entire beam of the yacht utilized for a grand and inviting retreat. The generously sized island berth is offset from the hull, providing easy access from both sides. The aft section of the berth-top, mounted on gas support struts, lifts to reveal a large "blanket chest". Drawers, cabinets, storage bins and a deep hanging locker provide ample space for personal gear. A dressing seat adds further convenience, and features such as pre-installed fan and stereo speaker wires and space for air conditioning equipment here and throughout the yacht facilitate after-market additions. Two overhead hatches, a Dorade vent and several opening ports will keep this area bright and well ventilated, as are all other areas throughout the interior.

This spacious, central living area is equally suited for social gatherings, off-watch retreats, or gourmet dining. The hinged table maybe secured against the bulkhead mounted bottle and glass rack or easily lowered to make a large dining area.An exceptional amount of interior stowage is available in the salon, as elsewhere in the yacht, due in large part to the generous tankage being centrally located below the cabin sole. This feature also keeps these considerable weights low and close to the centre of the yacht to maximize stability and minimize trim changes. The starboard settee pulls out to provide a double berth.
Beautiful hand-crafted cabinetry and joinery work throughout the yacht with varnished solid teak and oak sole, full length settees with multi density 5" cushions covered in ultra leather fabric, well placed and substantial handrails, main saloon lights with extra chrome plated halogen cabin sidelights with individual dimmers, numerous opening ports, Dorade deck vents and hatches, and durable and easily maintained overhead and hull surfaces make this saloon and the entire interior attractive, comfortable and practical.
The galley, immediately to the starboard side of the companionway, is easily accessible to the cockpit and the main salon,and features numerous convenience details for the cruising sailor.A generous, wrap around counter in Corian provides ample work space for food preparation while numerous drawers, lockers and laminate-lined cabinets offer abundant space for provisioning and kitchen ware storage. A three burner LPG stove with oven and grill (all with flame failure devises), along with a standard (AC) microwave oven, deep polished stainless steel sinks, overhead light and a slide out trash receptacle all make for pleasurable time spent in the galley. The well insulated icebox features a double gasketed lid that opens on a gas strut to reveal a divided, lighted, and electric drain pump equipped box with ample room for extra refrigerated storage on longer voyages. The slip resistant molded sole provides secure footing and easy maintenance for this busy area, and extends throughout the companionway, nav and aft head areas as well.
Hot water is provided by either calorifier when under engine or immersion heater when alongside.
Entered from either the main salon or through a private door in the aft cabin, the aft head, with its folding teak shower seat, wrap around vanity, oval polished sink, teak framed mirror, and bulkhead mounted shower unit with a pull around curtain provide particularly nice facilities for guests and crew. Shower drains in both heads have an electric drain pumps discharging overboard, with sole drains configured to work at rest or under sail. Work surfaces are in Corian.
The aft cabin has privacy doors to the companionway area in the main saloon and also to the aft heads. It features a big Pullman-style athwartship bunk, a large cedar-lined hanging locker and a generous bureau with several compartments.Two opening ports and an overhead hatch bathe the area in natural light and privide excellent ventilation. A varnished solid teak and oak sole is found in this cabin also.
