Building upon his experience with his earlier Oyster 56 and 53 designs, Rob Humphreys was given a straightforward design brief - to draw a yacht of just under fifty feet with three cabins, whilst offering outstanding performance and a generous load carrying capacity for bluewater cruising.
Compared to the Holman and Pye designed 485 which she replaced, the 49 is a much ‘bigger’ yacht, with greatly enhanced interior volume, a longer waterline, increased sail area and displacement, all of which combine to give great confidence in all sea and weather conditions.
We launched fifteen examples between 2001 and 2007, so the 49 remains a rarity on the brokerage market. Nonetheless she is an excellent proposition for those whose cruising areas are better suited to a yacht of less than fifty feet, or those who prefer the simpler handling and lower maintenance costs of this size of yacht.
Ellen Mae is a late model 49, with a beautiful dark blue hull, and simple sloop rig with in-mast furling mainsail and furling genoa, all controlled from the cockpit. Below decks she has hand crafted American light oak joinery and sleeps up to six in three cabins. Her generous saloon is enhanced by the Oyster deck saloon, which gives a light and airy feel.
Her first owner sailed her around UK waters, and sold after just three years, the second owner based her in the Mediterranean, but has sailed Scottish waters more recently. Ellen Mae is a great example of a 49, and would repay an early viewing.

We have now owned Ellen Mae since 2006. The first six years we sailed around the Mediterranean, exploring Spain, France, Italy, Greece and all the island groups. We generally spent five idyllic months each summer meandering; a great start to our retirement. We have now sailed back to the UK and have spent the last two years sailing the highlands and islands of Scotland, a truly wonderful sailing ground.
Ellen Mae has been a wonderful yacht to explore these amazing places and has always looked after us in many challenging situations. She has been a delightful, comfortable, very safe home but we are now ready to move on to new pastures and it is with a heavy heart we are selling her.
We hope Ellen Mae’s new owners will have as many wonderful experiences with her as we had.
