The Peter Norlin / Jens Ostmann designed Sweden Yacht 45 has built a reputation as a first class blue water cruiser capable of looking after her crew in the worst of conditions while on offshore passages. Built for the current owners to thier own specifications and launched in 2002, Amsala is an immaculate example of her class and now offers an excellent opportunity to acquire a yacht ready for the next blue water adventure.
Since her launch the boat has cruised the Baltic, Channel Islands, Med and Canaries before spending 2 years cruising the Caribbean. On return to Europe further cruising of the French Biscay coast and Spain were enjoyed before making the passage north to explore the Scottish west coats.
During this period the boat has been professionally maintained with sensible additions made to her already comprehensive inventory. Having enjoyed many thousands of miles of safe cruising the owners have never had reason to question the abilities of the design and comment that the boat always looked after her crew even in the most arduous of conditions.

Constructed from GRP end grain balsa core sandwich moulding. Additional reinforcing is fitted in way of all high load deck fittings. Hull to deck joint is of flange type construction being bonded with polyester paste and through bolted by the toe rail securing bolts.
A single balanced spade rudder is fitted, constructed in a GRP moulding with a solid stainless steel rudder stock.
The decks are finished with a high quality laid teak deck constructed (when new) from solid 12mm thick teak. The decks are in excellent condition overall and have been maintained to an extremely high standard since new. From the layout it is evident the deck has been designed to be practical while at sea without compromising comfort and appearence while in harbour.
The foredeck is sensibly laid out with good open space allowing crew to move around easily even when at sea. Aft of the windlass is a large sealed locker providing storage for sails, fenders, warps and more if required. From the locker access can be gained forward to large self draining chain locker or to service the electric windlass motor. With the the locker is mounted the Spectra Water Maker.
Just forward of the mast is the self tacking track for the self tacking jib which is ideally suited to short handed cruising.
Wide side decks allow easy access for crew from the cockpit forward in all conditions with the jackstays providing security in heavy weather. Bottle screw covers have been fitted to protect the sails from chafe.
The large cockpit provides ample seating for a full crew plus guests with the helm position well aft. All reefing lines and halyards are lead aft to banks of clutches either side of the companionway. The electric primary winches and manual secondary winches are sited at approximately mid length of the cockpit outboard of the coaming. Bridge deck mounted B&G 20/20 displays are easily viewable from the helm position with the pod mounted plotter/radar display providing the helmsman with all information required.
Aft of the wheel the port and starboard sides of the large lazarette locker are accessed through individual hatches. Steps are fitted to provide access into these large lockers. The central section of the transom drops down to create a large bathing platform complete with swimming ladder.
The quality of internal finish and joinery work is second to none constructed where possible from marine grade light weight mahogany faced cored panels and elsewhere in solid premium quality solid mahogany, all finished in a satin varnish. The sole is constructed from the traditional teak and holly style boards finished with varnish. Through out the boat the quality of workmanship and attention to detail is evident which creates a truly luxurious yet practical feel to compliment the functional deck layout, support by the fact all berth are fitted with lee cloths.
At the forward end is effectively the owners suite, complete with dedicated heads and shower facilities. The heads is sufficently sized to have a seperate shower area forward with the heads sited at the aft end across from the sink and vanity unit.
A large double berth running fore and aft is offset to port in the owners cabin with ample storage provided in a selection of drawers beneath. To starboard rather than the standard seating unit a dresser type unit has been custom built providing additional storage.
The spacious saloon is laid out with the large saloon table and wrap around seating to port. Outboard of the seating storage is provided behind the seat back and in front opening lockers. The forward locker has been cut to suit the glass which are included with the sales inventory. Below the table is a large drinks locker again with cut outs to support the bottles. Down the starboard side of the saloon is good sized chart table and separate navigators seat and working area, with repeaters for navigation instrumentation, plotter and radar. Excellent storage is provided for a large quantity of charts along with other gear in a selection of lockers and drawers.
The functional galley area is situated aft of the navigators work area. The L-shaped layout of the galley is ideal for use at sea. Utilisation of space is maximised through the area with clever use of space such as the pull out chopping board which serves as a worktop extension or infill over the double stainless steel sink.
Directly opposite the galley is the main heads compartment with sea toilet, vanity unit and separate shower area. Teak slatted sole grates are fitted through out the heads, providing a self draining non slip surface.
Aft either side of the companionway are the port and starboard aft cabins, both of a matching size with good sized double berths and ample storage for two crews belongings provided in each throughout a selection of lockers.
Spars & Rigging
The boat is fitted with the standard factory specified sloop rig which has had some sensible additions made for blue water cruising.
Sliver anodised Selden spars, double spreader mast with spinnaker pole stowed on track. Selden boom fitted with single line in boom reefing for reefs 1&2 with 3rd reef being manual. All standing rigging in stainless steel with Hasselfors rigging screws. All running rigging run aft to cockpit.
In addition to the standard equipment the owner also opted for the Selden gas strut style kicker and a removable inner forestay for use with storm jib. The mainsail track has also been upgraded with a full Harken mainsail track system.
Engine & Machinery
The original specification Volvo Penta TMD22 unit is positioned in a dedicated space beneath the companionway steps which is fully sound insulated, all insulation PVC covered to prevent any contamination of foam. With the steps raised access around the engine and gearbox is good allowing easy undertaking of routine maintenance tasks. A number of spares for the engine come with the boat including a spare alternator and ECU
The Mastervolt Whisper Gen 3.5 is located in the starboard lazarette locker, fitted in 2005 the unit has been little used. The unit is controlled via a remote panel mounted at the chart table. With the locker empty access to the generator is more than adequate while its location well aft in the boat minimises noise in the cabins.
Since returning from blue water cruising the Spectra water-maker unit has be left de-commissioned and will require full re-commissioning prior to use. The mechanics of the system are mounted within the large foredeck sail locker. Again the unit is controlled via a remote panel mounted at the chart table.
