This unusual multihull embodies a classic Corinthian axiom: “The best cruising boat is the best racing boat.” Indeed, sterling performance adds so much to the cruising experience – and Spartan, seamanlike accommodations add so much to one’s chance of winning ocean races -- that a careful combination of these two parameters should dominate the design of serious voyaging yachts. There may be no multihull designer better able to achieve this rare compromise than the late, great Dick Newick. His 38’ trimaran design ECHO II, as represented here by MOCKING BIRD, splendidly exemplifies that talent.
Meticulously built in Virginia by the multihull specialists at Lombardi Yachts and launched in 2002, this vessel has been well kept by her original, very boat-wise, owner at his private mooring, but (for reasons of life getting in the way) she has been very little used. The writer of this watched her being built, has sailed in her at over 18 knots, and has examined her carefully in 2014. Her structure, spars, sails, rigging, hardware, systems and machinery all match or surpass the designer’s specs, and all appear to be in like-new condition. Her original Awlgrip® finish, inside and out, is remarkably fair and sound-if-not-glossy, and her general countenance (excepting the engine room hatch which drips) is complete and truly ready for sea. She is priced at US$250,000, which is just over half of her original investment..
NOTE: A seven minute DVD of this vessel,
shown sailing at over 18 knots in a
breeze too light to make white caps,
is available from Jim Brown.
