"Carenza" was born in 2002 as a "fast cruiser", this is what designers' remarks note on hand-drawn plans of the boat. Made by British enthusiasts using so called cold mold technology - cedar planking with layers of glass-epoxy. Main features of the boat are: light displacement (2,85 tons), powerful sail plan, fractional rig, retractable bowsprit, ballast tanks (!), spade rudder, "L" shaped kiel with bulb, VOLVO Penta 2 cyl. inboard with S drive and folding 3 blade prop. Lying in Klaipeda, Lithuania, please call the Poole Office on +44 (0) 1202 916443 for more information.

British designer Phil Morrison is known for "... blending innovation with elegant well engineered structures and high performance, whilst also delivering users controllability and sailability." (Wikipedia)
Main features of the boat are: light displacement (2,85 tons), powerful sail plan, fractional rig, retractable bowsprit, ballast tanks (!), spade rudder, "L" shaped keel with bulb, VOLVO Penta 2 cyl. inboard with S drive and folding 3 blade prop.
The boat has passed procedures of CE certification and conforms to EU recreational craft directive. Full test report is available.
Narrow beam (2,78 m), light displacement (3,75 t), deep L shaped keel with bulb (total draft 1,80 m), deep spade rudder makes a very light and stable boat, which is well balanced and feels good on the tiller. "Carenza" is a real light air flyer. Ballast tanks of 800 kg on each side adds possibilities, which I had never used.
Rig and Sails
"Carenza" has 7/8 rig, that means backstays, which adds lots of possibilities to fine-tune the sails, but also adds a bit of complexity when tacking. But then it comes a time, when you want even more complexity - then you mount a bowsprit and fly gennaker. The boat becomes a joy machine, leaving bored cruisers far behind.
The mast has double spreaders, is deck-stepped and is relatively tall for the boat - at 12,7 m. This gives good sail area to waterline ratio, if you care of having lots of power. The mainsail is large (27 sq. m.) compared to foresail, and has full battens to keep shape. Genoa is mounted on Furlex and does not overlap mainsail a lot. I like this mainsail-dominated sail configuration - mainsail is more powerful and you can control it better.
For the less favorable weather there is a detachable "storm" forestay, which carries small storm jib on racks. I used it quite often and find important to have proper shaped storm sail when needed. Mainsail has 3 reef points for the same reasons.
Backstays and genoa has its own dedicated oversized winches, also stoppers, which allows to free winch if needed for some other ideas. There are totally 3 pairs of winches, if you count those on cabin top. The feeling is that rig is oversized, but I agree to carry some extra kilos but be on the safe side when things get rough.
General arrangement of winches and tiller is friendly for short handed or single handed steering - you can reach all controls without leaving the tiller.
Plans show 5 sleeping places, but forward cabin usually is filled by some stuff and only one inhabitant. Two persons sleep in port and starboard side berths, and most flexible team member fits in quarterberth on starboard side. Foldable cabin table is designed to fill the space between berths in saloon to make one hudge sleeping place. I found it impractical for my adventures and removed the table. You can put it back in place. Galley, head and navigation table area are all there (galley on starboard, nav, table and head on port). No fridge (bring portable one for chilling the beers).
"Carenza" is equipped for safe offshore navigations - has Furuno radar, Garmin chart plotter (dual mounting brackets - inside and outside), Icom AIS receiver connected to chart plotter, Garmin GPS receiver connected to VHF with DSC and distress function. Navtex receiver is currently out of order.
There is a detachable waterproof tiller autopilot. There are wind, depth data, GPS repeater outside, also water log, which I find inaccurate. I do not mention magnetic compass - would you go to the sea without one? Masthead wind sensors will be replaced for 2016 season.
The engine is Volvo Penta 2002 (2 cyl.). I believe it is older than the boat itself. Number of hours unknown, but I had never had any big issues with it. Starter and generator are serviced few seasons ago and work perfectly. The engine is connected to an S drive and 3 bladed folding prop.
The engine has easy access for servicing, there is primary and secondary fuel filters and oil filter to be replaced annually. The engine has its own dedicated battery for starting, another battery is used to feed the instruments.
"Carenza" has a lot of buoyancy spaces, also safely closed transom. She comes with life-raft, set of flares, sea anchor, horseshoe life buoys and some more safety features. Ballast tanks when empty also serve as buoyancy spaces. Spare storm forestay and proper storm jib, deeply reefed mainsail will carry you in stormy weather. Manual bilge pump is in place and operating.
I had never seen this kind of structural keel fixing solutions, also structurally enforced cabin roof. I think this is much stronger and safer solutions than on regular production boat.
