Owner's Comments:
We are ex sailors and took the plunge into the trawler game with a 1987 Mainship III. The idea was to use this as our "training wheels" into the world of power boating. We really enjoyed the boat, but then we started our planning to do the "Great Loop" and we felt that we wanted a bit different vessel to take on that challenge.
Based on our experience with the Mainship, we knew that we didn't want to be crawling up ladders to get to the flybridge (my knees didn't appreciate that sort of exercise), we wanted more room to walk around the boat to make our line handling in the locks a bit easier, and as someone who does most of the mechanical maintenance, I needed a lot better access to the systems on the boat. Along that same line, I wanted to minimize the amount of maintenance required and felt that a single diesel engine would be a good choice. She also needed to have a keel that would offer protection for the running gear (even though I have never run aground :-)). Seaworthiness was another primary concern as we would be crossing some big water during the trip (Atlantic, Great Lakes, & Gulf of Mexico).
The comfort factor was also a consideration. We wanted a substantial galley, two staterooms (with their own heads), a comfortable salon, and plenty of storage. We also thought that a washer/dryer might come in handy (it did).
After attending several trawlerfests, boat shows, and following various looper blogs, the Monk 36 (the Nova Scotia built version - a lot less teak that the older Taiwanese built boats) stood out as the boat that would serve our needs. It met all of our requirements in a size that would be very manageable for a couple and provide us with everything we would need to make the journey and accommodate the occasional visitors that might join us . Monk's Vineyard (the boat is a Monk & we enjoy a glass of wine at the end of the day) exceeded all of our expectations and allowed us to experience the Loop and the Bahamas as the adventure of a lifetime with none of the "surprises" that many of our boating buddies encountered. Boat is in excellent condition and has been well cared for by Coast Guard Licensed Captain. Complete 2 ½ year cruise on Great Loop and over to Bahamas. | ||
