This is an incredible opportunity to own the newest Bristol Channel Cutter available. This one is the real thing, equipped to sail fast and far. Her first owner sailed her from Costa Mesa CA to Annapolis MD, the long way. Since purchased by her current owner in fall of 2010, she has been loved, maintained to perfection, and readied for crusing while being sailed very very little.
You know we love our Bristol Channel Cutter, but this one, Galatea, is without question ourvery favorite BCC. She is one that is truly perfect with nothing out of place, nothing overdone. She has everything that is necessary; everything done right and maintained to perfection by an ex aircraft mechanic with zero tolerance precision.
The Bristol Channel Cutter is renowned for its seaworthiness and sea kindliness. This is a beautiful ocean capable vessel that can be sailed easily by a small person like me. Lin and Larry Pardey have been sailing Lyle Hess-designed wooden cutters for just about 45 years. Their mantra of "go simple, go now" has reverberated around the world inspiring the owners of the fiberglass Lyle Hess Bristol Channel Cutters to do just that. A few do it! Galatea did it! ...but more about that later….
Galatea is special. She is the white one, with her beautiful bulwarks newly sanded down to pure Mahogany and refinished with four coats of one part Epifanes Monourethan sprayed on perfectly. Just about every piece of deck hardware on the deck and coachroof has been rebedded in butyl the way Hinckley does it. Her current owner is somewhat obsessive about pretty much everything; when it comes to boats, he is just the right kind of owner you want to buy a boat from! He did all the hard "invisible" maintence work from stem to stern and keel to masthead to make this boat last your lifetime and longer. He has spent the last six years improving and perfecting this already beautiful vessel spending a small fortune and untold hours of labor. Galatea is one of a kind!
Her first owners, Jill and Tom, desire ample credit also. Down below, Galatea is absolutely gorgeous. But even more important is the very special feature of Galatea; she is one of only two BCC built with a unique fore and aft dinette and the only one with the fixed table that is rock solid. And with the extra wide in the galley she has the incredible double sink! With this very desirable layout, the double berth is about six inches wider than any other BCC. Now that is brilliant! The dining table is designed to slide out from under the berth on the port side. Fully extended, the table that can easily accommodate four for dinner. With the table in the normal position the dinette seating area creates more space in the salon and you can walk around the boat and never have the table in your way. There is also extra storage under the seats and a lovely storage area at the forward end of the dinette. It is just so amazing that after building 116 of these lovely boats, they got it really right. You’ll appreciate it.
The current owner has done every possible maintenance task whether it was really needed or not. He just wanted to make the boat ready to cruise for the rest of his life never needing to worry about anything. To that end, almost every every hose has been replaced with new. There is a beautiful junction box at the base of the mast and most of the lights are LED now. All the head hoses are new. Lots of things you would likely not notice. All the really difficult maintenance tasks are now done. The woodwork and joinery are perfect. The current owner refinished the cabin sole to utter perfection! It is lovely. The whole boat is incredible beautiful and perfect.
However beautiful and perfect she is, Galatea is a real BCC that has sailed farther than most BCC ever go. The first owners of Galatea sailed her “pretty much around the world”! They bought their BCC new from the Sam L. Morse Company in Costa Mesa with their world voyage foremost in mind. They took advantage of the company’s capabilities to customize their BCC for extended voyaging. The hull was laid up in 2000 as hull #117. She was launched in April 2001 in Newport Beach, CA. They spent the first two seasons cruising the Sea of Cortez in Mexico. After sailing back home to San Diego, they started their tour of the South Pacific including the Galapagos, French Polynesia, Rarotonga, Niue, Tonga, then New Zealand, Fiji, Australia, up around the “Top End” to Darwin, to Cocos Keeling, Ile Rodriguez, to Mauritius, to South Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, then northwest to St. Helena and the Caribbean, and finally up to Annapolis! Amazingly they sent an email to say they were enroute from Trinidad; they untied the boat in Trinidad and headed straight up the Atlantic to Annapolis. That is amazing, but of course they had already sailed all the world's oceans and under all the great capes. Her history and adventures make Galatea very special, and there is even more.
If you have Volume II of The World's Best Sailboats by Ferenc Mate, you will see some pictures of the interior of Galatea. In the later years of the SLM Company, they really became a semi custom builder. It was very cool because people had some great ideas of how to make the perfect BCC even better.
Now you can own a 2001 BCC! And a very, very special one. Just about the newest BCC we've ever offered! Certainly is in the best condition of any BCC we’ve ever seen due to the excesses of her current owner who, by the way, was a jet airplane mechanic in a past life. Maybe that explains his zero tolerance attitude. Everything must be perfect.

The Bristol Channel Cutter is the world's largest 28-foot boat! Starting up forward with the a real forepeak for really good storage. The bow area has a an area for rode and chain for the secondary anchor. The primary anchor chain is carried well aft in the forepeak with the ability to pull extra chain all the way back into the forecabin if you wish. The forepeak also carries the holding tank, with loads of space for storage above it for extra sails and lines, and canvas. There is good access through the forecabin, which I always call the multipurpose room. This forward cabin is the head, walk-in closet, workshop, and amazing stowage place. You will be amazed when you see it, but you won't really get it until you fill the boat up to cruise. Galatea even has a sink up forward recessed into the counter with cabinets outboard. One thing I love about the BCC is that the toilet is under a large seat on the centerline in the forward cabin where it is hidden from view. I think all boats should have this feature. Twenty-eight feet is just not big enough to have your toilet staring at you all the time.
Also, because the hatch is literally the entire forecabin, you open it either direction depending on the breeze you want, and you'll have a beautiful spacious feeling. This large hatch gives you incredible ventilation as the air is drawn right through the boat.
As you might know the Bristol Channel Cutter has a traditional pilot berth on the port side of the salon. On a passage his is a wonderful cozy sleeping spot for the off watch person. It is wonderful to sleep with the water rushing down the hull side on a starboard tack and surprisingly comfy on a port tack also. The pilot berth slides out to make a good sized double berth, 56 inches wide. It is very easy to side the berth out to make this double berth. The starboard settee is wide enough to make a very comfortable sea berth also. Outboard there is stowage behind and a lovely bookshelf with cabinetry. Also it is important to note that there is incredible storage under the settees as the tanks are in the bilge area low on the centerline. At the bulkhead, there is a Force 10 cozy cabin heater, your fireplace.
Galatea has ivory wainscoting panels on the cabin sides and ceiling, giving the salon a surprisingly spacious feeling. The galley is to port, and the dinette design allowed for a deep double sink and capacious storage. To starboard is the nav station, with the well insulated icebox under the nav table and the famous Lyle Hess bridge counter.
Aft of the nav station chart table is a large quarter berth that I like to call the garage. When we cruised, we actually took the cushion out and used the quarter berth for everything!

- Exterior wood is finished in a really special way, the Lin Pardey way! The small dimension teak has been treated with salt water and left to silver with only gentle cleaning. The serious wood elements; bulwarks, bowsprit, taffrail and rudder above waterline – NEW paint in November 2015 with Epifanes Monourethane to match the ivory hull color. The effect is stunning.
- The cockpit coamings, dorade boxes, propane deck boxes, are all NEWLY varnished May 2016
- There are canvas covers for all exterior varnish.
- Hatches have natural teak decking on the top (horizontal surfaces) and varnish on the vertical surfaces (where it is largely protected from the UV)....Advice from Lin and Larry Pardey, they would know. The overall impression is that Galatea is stunning, and relatively easy to care for.

- Ground tackle setup - chain locker is 3 feet aft of the hawse hole, chain is led aft through a large PVC pipe. Half of the 300’ chain rode is stored under the forecabin sole, just ahead of the mast.
- Bow rollers: for two anchors mounted on the bowsprit
- Windlass: ABI manual, bronze. The windlass sits on a special fitting for the end of the bowsprit that incorporates the hawse holes, which pass through the deck where the Sampson posts normally. This allows a Cherub dinghy to be stowed on the foredeck instead of a Fatty Knees dinghy under the boom on the cabin house. Windlass removed and rebedded in butyl with all NEW stainless hardware November 2015.

- Sam L. Morse built Cherub hard dinghy 7’4” – with newly painted oars and a new set of grips supplied for oars
- Title: builder’s certificate from the Sam L. Morse company
- The Cherub rides on the foredeck, and is lashed to pad eyes at the bow on the windlass mount and on the deck at each corner. Its two 7-foot oars (NEW paint & grips) are lashed to the lifeline stanchions on starboard. The sailing mast and boom are lashed to the lifeline stanchions on port. The sail and other gear are carried in the port lazarette, and the solid teak seats are carried in the aft lazarette.
- Galatea’s previous owners thought long and hard about the decision to not have the traditional Sampson posts, but they’ve never regretted the decision which resulted in many benefits. It reduced the weight up foreword by 70 pounds of teak, and it made it easy to anchor without having the dinghy in the way. Also, this design makes the windlass available to use with the sea anchor situation. Also, they liked having the dinghy on the foredeck rather than the cabin top, for better visibility.
- The Cherub is a great sailing dinghy and is easily launched by a solo sailor. The Cherub was built by Sam L. Morse Company especially for the BCC for those who want to stow the dinghy on the foredeck.
