GAS LIGHT is one of the best equipped charter sailing vessels on San Francisco Bay.
After 25 continuous years of building, equipping, commissioning and operating GAS LIGHT, the owner, builder and skipper is retiring, and offers this incredible vessel for a fraction of her replacement cost of well over one million dollars.
GAS LIGHT was built for the rugged and windy conditions of San Francisco Bay and Coastal Pacific Ocean, and has traveled to Channel Islands and back. Her safe and sturdy hull would make an excellent charter vessel for Southern California, The Pacific Northwest and Alaska, and any location on East Coast from Florida Keys to Maine. GAS LIGHT was built and equipped for a variety of locales, and would be equally at home in everything from a dive boat in Florida Keys or Bahamas, cruising Down East Coastal Maine, exploring the shallow waters of Chesapeake Bay or sailing among the Glaciers in Alaska
GAS LIGHT is in top condition, was recently hauled, and had extensive refit with new chainplates fitted, new topside paint, new deck and cabin paint, etc. She is in "as new condition" and gleams inside and out.
She has a current Coast Guard Certificate of Inspection. Ready for charter. Owner /builder ready to part with GASLIGHT for the unbelievable price of $399,000, a fraction of her value and replacement cost. This includes vessel and all related equipment as well as charter business client base.
Owner will assist buyer during transition.

Few sailing charter boats have been admired and enjoyed on the Bay more than the steel Schooner GAS LIGHT. Whether anchored at McCovey Cove for SF Giants' baseball games, moored for a picnic at Angel Island, wine tasting up the Napa River, visiting the Delta or a front row seat along the City front for Blue Angels, or even a voyage to the Channel Island, GAS LIGHT was always there.
GAS LIGHT 's owner/ operator is Sausalito shipwright and sailor Billy Martinelli. He built GAS LIGHT after hiring renowned Naval Architect Carl Shumacker to put his ideas on paper. The result was GAS LIGHT launched in 1991 and started operating as a Coast Guard Inspected Passenger Vessel in year 2000. The complete boat including hull, deck, cabin, fuel and water tanks, and wooden spars were all built by Master Shipwright Martinelli.
GAS LIGHT's design is based on a turn of the century San Francisco Scow Schooner, similar to State of California Historic Vessel "Alma". GASLIGHT is 49 passenger charter vessel. Her stable hull allows GAS LIGHT to sail comfortably on the Bay and Ocean Coastal waters, and her centerboard allows GAS LIGHT to explore the Bay and Delta and Napa and Petaluma River destinations that are normally off limits to 70 ft schooner. This ability to offer Napa Wine Tours as well as Delta excursions has made GAS LIGHT especially popular with diverse charter groups.
GAS LIGHT is in excellent operable condition and holds current certification by US Coast Guard as an Inspected Charter Vessel for 50 passengers. GAS LIGHT features a 18' by 30' wide-open cabin below decks with a 12' long mahogany salon table and plenty of cushioned seating. Because of her flat-bottomed hull design she sails very flat and stable, making food and beverage service unusually easy and comfortable. GAS LIGHT has always been a Bay favorite for birthday parties, weddings, memorials, corporate team building and special events such as historical, ecological or educational tours of the Bay.
The Scow Schooner Gas Light has been offering private charter sailing excursions on the San Francisco Bay for 15 years. This sailing yacht can be chartered for special events including birthday parties, weddings, corporate off-sites and team-building, ecological and naturalist-led Bay tours, ash scatterings and more.
She is Coast Guard inspected for 49 passengers plus Captain and crew and can easily accommodate a full load. She has enormous space, both above and below deck, allowing guests to retreat to the warmth below during those cold, windy days on the San Francisco Bay.
Since she is a flat bottom Scow Schooner, she has very little heel under full sail and makes for a very stable platform for those guests that are new to sailing. She is a dream to sail and easily handled by Captain and one crew. Gas Light's unique design offers the most stable, dry and comfortable sailing experience on the Bay.
GAS LIGHT has been berthed and chartered out of Schoonmaker Marina in Sausalito. Her current slip may be able to be transfered to the new owner.
There is an active website at www.gaslightcharters.com that drives traffic for the charter business and will be included with the sale.
The interior of GAS LIGHT is designed to accommodate a large number of guests with her open layout. Upon entry into below deck, you will find a spectacular spacious room that is approx 30' long and 18' wide. In the middle of the room is a 12' long, bar-height table surrounded by stools that can seat 15+ guests. On either side of the vessel, there are settees that are deep enough to sleep on and stretch the length of the boat. These settees can easily seat 30 to 40 quests.
Forward on starboard side is the galley with commercial sink and stainless countertop. Also, in the galley is a refrigerator and microwave.
Aft of the galley on starboard is the separate shower. At the aft end of the salon to starboard of the companionway, is the easily accessible head.
To port of the companionway is the chart table and electronics.
SAILS and RIGGING
GAS LIGHT is rigged as a gaff-rigged schooner with masts that were carefully selected by the owner. In 1995 the two masts were Douglas fir trees growing on the north side of a mountain owned by a friend of the owner in Humboldt County, California. He researched the proper way to choose and cut trees for masts, and with the help of a couple of friends, he found and cut down the trees now standing as masts on the schooner GAS LIGHT. The growth rings indicate that the mainmast tree was 100 years old and the foremast tree, 98 years old. They were cut in the winter when the sap was down, stripped of their bark, and towed to Sausalito using an ingenious trailer rig. The owner then shaped the masts and dried them for two years, rotating and saturating them repeatedly with a linseed oil mixture.
