There are few boats so uniquely qualified to take two people and their guests around the world as comfortably and as economically as the Nordhavn 40. Strong, rugged and handsome in a no-nonsense way, her special personality was inspired by salty commercial ships fishing the world's deepest oceans. She stirs a passionate interest and curiosity along docks and throughout anchorages everywhere, with people enthusiastically asking her crew "where have you been" and "where are you headed?" Indeed, the Nordhavn 40 looks like the serious passagemaker that she is. But above all her seriousness of purpose, there is a wonderfully romantic, emotional element to the boat that strongly attracts a wide base of seasoned sailors, experienced power boaters and those just entering the world of boating.
The result of over three years of development by Pacific Asian Enterprises, (PAE), she represents the smallest of Nordhavn's fleet of ocean-crossing motor vessels. Yet her modest size does not limit her incredible, non-stop cruising range. Thanks to a highly efficient, full displacement hull design and a fuel capacity of over 900 gallons, a heavily loaded boat ready for ocean crossing will cover more than 2,400 nautical miles at 7 knots. For instance, the fully stabilized Nordhavn 40 used during PAE's Around The World Voyage (ATW) was tested in relatively calm conditions and yielded the following results:
Depending on weather, the actual performance can fluctuate for better or worse. On the run from California to Hawaii, the ATW boat pushed through contrary winds and currents which negatively impacted its output. However, when experiencing favorable seas in the Western Pacific, the boat made 7.4 knots at 2.6 GPH.
More important than her range is her impressive seakeeping ability. This stout, tough ship is designed to punch through heavy head seas without hesitation and to track down swell as if on rails. Her high bow provides extraordinary buoyancy and contributes to her dry ride. Beneath the surface her forefoot of moderate depth eliminates pounding and helps provide a smooth, gentle motion. Her long keel with a large, protected rudder keeps her going exactly where she's pointed. When equipped with Nordhavn's highly dependable TPS (Towed Passive Stabilizers) or gyro-controlled fins, side roll caused by beam seas is minimized, greatly enhancing the comfort of her captain and crew.
Even if her owner's cruising plans do not include crossing oceans, the Nordhavn 40's remarkable capabilities will be greatly appreciated and utilized during long-range, coastal cruising. Her solid, seaworthy performance instills confidence in the captain and a sense of safety in the crew. Being caught in an afternoon squall on Lake Michigan or in a nasty Nor'easter while crossing the Gulf Stream, her crew will continue on, knowing their ship can take whatever the sea delivers.

“Albatross” is hull #02 in the Nordhavn 40 series - perhaps the most capable 40-foot passagemaking powerboat ever designed. “Albatross” recently completed a trip from Florida to Dana Point, CA and is ready to continue cruising! She has a solid fiberglass hull, internal ballast, propeller protected in aperture, Lugger main engine, Yanmar wing engine, and the well-proven Nordhavn dry stack exhaust system and gravity feed fuel system, producing one of the most reliable engine systems fitted on any yacht.
“Albatross” has the standard Nordhavn 40 interior layout; she has teak panels with solid teak moldings throughout the salon, galley, and pilothouse. The contrasting light colored interior upholstery and tasteful carpeting contributes to a very warm feel.
She has diesel heat and reverse cycle air-conditioning throughout.
Enter the salon from the cockpit through a Diamond/Seaglaze commercial grade door. There is a dinette settee and table to starboard. Outboard to port is an optional Ekornes chair with a diesel fired Dickenson fireplace. The galley is located to port at the forward end of the salon, and has granite counter tops in lieu of the original Corian counter tops. The TV and audio-visual equipment are to starboard. Just inboard there are steps up to the pilothouse and down for hallway access to the head and sleeping cabins. The head, with a separate stall shower is in the hallway to starboard, and the guest stateroom is to port. Engine room access is through the guest cabin, although there are mechanic’s and egress hatches in the main salon also. The master stateroom is at the forward end of the hallway. It is configured with a centerline double bed and lot’s of locker and drawer space, including two hanging lockers.
The volume of the full beam cabin of the Nordhavn 40 is one of the many interior elements that functions so well for long passages and for living aboard. In fact, there are several couples who have lived aboard Nordhavn 40s for years at a time.
The bulkheads are teak paneled with teak trim moldings, as are the table top, and window valances.
The headliner is of upholstered light fabric panels separated by teak battens. Overhead lights recessed into the headliner panels are controlled with bulkhead-mounted switches.
The salon floor is carpeted for comfort but has the additional benefit of augmenting the sound attenuation measures built into the engine room.

The galley is spacious and efficient. Floor is teak and spruce. There is locker and drawer storage throughout. The Princess 3-burner propane stove and oven are easy to use.

The Nordhavn 40 pilothouse is another element of a true passagemaking yacht with its large instrument console and steering station, reverse raked windscreens, comfortable settee and dinette table, and watch berth. The pilothouse is removed from other living areas to reduce light and sound intrusion into the pilothouse from other activity onboard.

Hallway and Forward
The bulkheads in the forward sections of the interior are faced in a white laminate for increased light reflection. They are trimmed in solid teak. The hallway has a carpeted floor. The hallway provides access to the head, mid-cabin, and forward (master) cabin. The steps down to the hallway and up to the pilothouse are inlaid with Lonseal flooring.
The master stateroom is a comfortable retreat with its centerline bed. There is organized stowage all around that includes deep overhead locker storage port and starboard, hanging locker space behind louvered doors port and starboard, and drawer space aft and under the bed.
A deck hatch and four opening ports supply natural light and ventilation to the cabin.

The head in the Nordhavn 40 is convenient to the entire interior, and large for a 40' yacht. The shower in particular has very good headroom for tall crew members, and also has a clear glass door. There is plenty of working surface on the vanity counter top with a high sea rail, and organized storage besides. The toilet is a very reliable Groco K, rebuilt in 2016.
