General Description
The J-120 is an impressive 40-footer, a performance machine with cruising accommodations. It is for sailors who want to go fast around the buoys and those who want cruise with family and friends.

Actual Condition
This is an unfinished project boat. It is reported by the owner that it was damaged on the port midship and professionally repaired and sprayed. It needs a complete new interior, engine, electric, electronics, sails, etc.

The mast, rigging and boom vang are intact. She has been on the hard since 2002.

Additional info from owner as of 9/28/09:
J-120 hull was damaged in 2002 on the top sides port mid ship and professionally repaired using balsa core, epoxy resin and biaxial laminate in vacuum bagging technique.

The stringers, main bulkhead and chain plates where not damaged. The hull is sprayed in AWLGRIP SUPER JET BLACK, clear coated with metallic gold fleck and sahara cream no skid deck surface. The hatches and portholes are all sprayed in gold-clear coat. The mast, boom, boom wang, and bow sprit is in gold sprayed and clear coated. The standing rigging is rod and professionally checked by FKG rigging shop in St.Maarten. The spars are complete and in excellent condition.

I have decide to go with more "advance" racing keel for several reasons:
- to build performance-new keel is made of steel with five laminate plates of the fin and bulb made of steel with full lead inside the bulb (old keel was used to melt the lead ).
-This fin is thinner than original one.
-Draft is increased from 7 to 9 ft.
-Low center of gravity with lead bulb.
- Weight reduction in the keel is 1000 lbs, but it can be more if you want to take steel out of the bulb and program reduction weight scale gives you credit of 1500 lbs to reduce weight. I went a little conservative with just 1000 lbs less.
-To improve keel-hull attachment: as we know J-20 boats in the past had several problems with keel-hull join result in cracking the sump area and even sinking the boat.
- I have cut the sump to make the bottom of the hull in the keel area flat to take keel plate, vertical hull profiled plate that was welded to the fin of the keel with additional small steel ribs on both sides, welded as well to prevent torsion effect of the bulb itself and give more stiffness.

On the holding plate where welded 8 SS bolts in the way 1-1-4-1-1 much stronger than 6 in-line that J-120 has. The hull is reinforced inside the bilge with 2 inches epoxy biax-carbon cloth laminate to the stringers and whole bilge area is reinforced in progressively way to take and disturb the load. Basically to take less weight, less drag, more stability and more stiffness.

-Original keel of J-120 was way too big and old fashioned...full lead with some more weight at the bottom. The new keel is taking step further with lead in the bulb...every racing boat today has same philosophy.

-Old J-120 keel was too thick, producing more drag.

-Old J-120 keel was too weak, result cracking bolts and cracking sump fiberglass area. Rudder is extended to the 7 ft in length and faired to the racing profile. The rudder bearings are checked and lip seal will be replaced.

The steering wheel is there and I have ordered, from Edson, a complete new chain kit, including upper small shaft with bearings...so from the rudder to the steering, everything will be checked and complete.

Bow sprit is complete and no damage.

Interior is changed from one aft cabin and port locker to two identical aft cabins with possibilities to use port aft cabin as locker. Bulkheads are laminate and formica is on as well.
Interior job will need: headliners, galley, cushions, wiring; actually complete interior except bulkheads.

My idea was to keep "Spartan" looking as much as... with no doors just netting instead, light cushions, even floorboards are made of nomex core for the weight reduction. But still crew can use 3 cabins (instead of 2 from original J-120).

To reduce the weight of the hull by stripping interior and make everything light with 1000 lbs less in the bulb should improve performance in light winds, weak point of
J-120. Low center of gravity with lead in the bulb will improve less pitching and more maneuverable with more righting moment. Keel was design as my 30 years racing experience, NACA hydrodynamic profiles and Mars keel scale reduction program.

Last year I had changed keel on my other racing boat, KIWI 35 as she was too light depending of the people sitting on the wings...never like to sail to the wind in even moderate conditions causing lee-wing drag...new keel build performance so much that she flies now upwind leaving in a wake many boats that I could just dream before to catch upwind.

So for the $$$$ you will get:
Hull, keel, rudder everything connected on the place. All spars are on the side.
Internal lay out, bulkheads etc... Almost all deck hardware, winches stoppers etc...

What you need to do:
Sails, running rigging, electrical, electronic, interior head liners cushions, some deck hardware, stanchions , pushpit pulpit etc.....
Engine-I am planning to install small Yanmar 20 hp engine to further reduce weight and that can be done very soon with additional price.

Some of the photos of the new custom racing keel..

She is made of steel laminate plates in the fin and steel shell for the torpedo bulb.

Bulb is filled with lead.

Weight is in the fin 1200 lbs
In the shell bulb 300 lbs

Lead in the bulb 3500 lbs

Bilge bottom is reinforce to 2 inches thickness compare half inch from the Js and laminate with biaxial carbon cloth for more strength.

Holding plate with SS bolts in 1-1-4-1-1 geometry will prevent torsion of the fin, cracking on the hull and the joint hull-keel and will secure smooth ride even in fast maneuvering.

Thickness of the fin is 2 inches compare to 4 of Js...less drag through water...

Fin was made of five steel laminate sheets..two welders where welding same time on each side to prevent torsion of the materials.

This what you see is just a base of the solid materials and shaping will be finished in high density core modeled to the NACA 68 profile and using West system epoxy filler with 410 microspheres for final result.

**Updated info as of 12/14/09:

The rudder and keel are repaired.
