LAYOUT AND ACCOMMODATION - Luxury entertainer, ideal family and twin-couple cruiser Getting aboard and around the San Remo 35 is a waltz and the accessibility adds to the boat’s use ability and entertaining value. The integrated swim platform boosts waterfront real estate. The port walkway leads directly to the cockpit, from where another a moulded step leads forward. The side decks and the foredeck are traced by a decent bow rail and moulded toe rails adding to the safety factor.

European boaters love their sun lounges and the San Remo 35 has a double reclining ‘pad’ in her cockpit and a second double on the foredeck. They create two sun-drenched zones at either end of the boat and privacy for different groups. We also welcome the abundant grab rails at just about every turn on this boat.

The cockpit is dominated by the U-shaped lunch setting opposite an impressive inbuilt moulded amenities centre ready to serve. There’s a sink, flat food prep area with solid counter, a grab rail and a cool box.

The San Remo 35 hasn’t an aft saloon bulkhead, so the helm, cockpit and decks meld as one. This creates a fantastic social cruising stage with exceptional views out the windows thanks to the lack of big mullions. Passenger or pilot, it’s a very nice way to travel on the water. There’s just a small step up to the forward helm area from the cockpit seating, but it goes unnoticed.

For entertaining, the San Remo 35 cockpit has seating for at least eight. The lounges are largely shaded by the softtop. Visually, we reckon the San Remo 35 has one of the best-looking and smartest softtop set-ups we’ve seen; you can gain shade for lunch and a wind-in-your-hair ride when you open the whole thing up and cruise, especially at the helm with your head out.

The forward-facing helm seats for captain and co-pilot can each seat a couple. The latter gets the obligatory ‘chart table’ with lots of storage for personal effects, while the captain enjoys a trick low-glare wood dash relaying lots of data. It really is a beautifully-designed helm, mindful of your ergonomics and set out so you can view and reach everything intuitively. Fuel and water gauges are at-a-glance, too.

In adverse weather, top down and sealed, you drive seated. Wipers ensure you should retain good views, while the sight lines for docking or checking your family are unfettered all the way to the boarding platform.

The San Remo 35 has a conventional two-cabin and one-bathroom layout, with a central saloon and galley at the below-decks’ landing area. The boat’s wide 3.50m beam translates to plenty of interior head- and shoulder room, loads of storage and generous sleeping arrangements.

The beautifully executed high-gloss black American maple joinery with vertical grain, nice U-shaped lounge (spare single/day bed) and abundant natural light flooding through the fixed and opening portlights and skylights make a big impact.

In the saloon, a family or two couples can gather around the dinette opposite the galley and be fed and watered (wet bar nearby), watch the television and play cards or board games. We like the fact the deck window hatches are large and there are opening portlights.

The compact galley looks smart with a useful amount of solid counter space. An dual zone stove or hob is integrated, microwave oven and modest brand new Waeco 110 litre fridge.

The day head off the aft end of the saloon also serves as en suite for the full-beam forward stateroom, but it doesn't have a separate shower stall. Still, more than one shower on a boat like this is of questionable use anyway and probably just more cleaning.

The bathroom is certainly upmarket with Avonite counters, ceramic oval washbasins, high-gloss joinery and plenty of natural ventilation once again.

The VIP cabin in the bow comes with a nice hull window and opening portlight. The floor space is a bonus. With loads of natural light bouncing off the high-gloss maple joinery and beautiful bedding, this owners cabin really shone.

Owners will gravitate to the full-beam stateroom. There’s not quite full-width headroom over the bed, mind you, but you can certainly get in with ease. The San Remo 35 is a seaside destination by name and nature.

HULL AND ENGINEERING - Resin infused hull, pod drives and proven engineering Sunseeker has always embraced cutting-edge technology. It's an advocate of CAD/CAM design, resin-infused hulls and mouldings, and Computational Fluid Dynamics in hull design. Doubtless Volvo Penta checked off on this stern-driven San Remo 35 as well.

Engineering-wise, the boat’s systems are tried and tested. There is more space in the engine room than this boat’s forerunners, but we dived in and noted acceptable owner/driver access to the main servicing and pre-departure check items.

We found the Volvo Penta raw-water strainers on the six-cylinder 230hp KAD42 engines, which have close-coupled stern drives; batteries under the steps; and 12V fans and there is also an auto fire system.

Plumbing, water pump, fuel and water tank access have all been well-considered, with access to these items, and the electrical system is Sunseeker’s own flawless set-up. It’s all pleasantly user friendly and none-too-technical.

ON THE WATER - Sunseeker off-the-wheel sportiness Along with the visual excitement, Sunseeker provides tactile stimulation at the wheel. The San Remo 35 is a nice drive, with clear vision and helm responsiveness. The 30-35 knot top speed is in keeping with most sportscruisers we drive in this class.

Certainly efficiency is a boast of today’s stern-driven lightweight sportscruisers. Balsa-cored hull topsides and composite deck and superstructure help reduce the San Remo 35’s weight.

The stepped chine hull maximises volume while reducing drag and wetted surface area. But with high freeboard, the boat’s volume is right up there in ‘sportsyacht’ territory.

Like most stern-driven boats, the San Remo 35 likes to ride free and easy and skip across the top of the water rather than plough through it. The boat accelerates nice and level and is a willing weekend escapee.

With 570 litres of fuel and 120 litres of water, your cruising range is massive.
