The Nordhavn 62 is one of the most revered long range cruising powerboats ever produced, and Gray Matter is a veteran of long passages throughout the Pacific.
Gray Matter is a walk-around version of the Nordhavn 62 with side decks to port and starboard. She is also a four stateroom, three head model that includes a crew cabin forward that includes access through a companionway to the foredeck as well as through the hallway aft to the salon.
The maneuverability and sea-keeping ability of the 62 under way coupled with the assistance of a powerful hydraulic bow thruster for close-in handling and docking assure that she can be handed easily by a couple. With all her fuel water and equipment specifications she provides self-sufficient, extended range capability. The dry stack exhaust on the Caterpillar main engine helps to establish the reliability to confidently cross any ocean, as so many Nordhavns have done.
Gray Matter is hull #6, and comes to the market after her most recent pacific crossing from Seattle, Washington to New Zealand.
Upgrades have been made to the galley as well as hydraulic and marine electronic upgrades. In September 2017 Gray Matter had the bottom taken to fiberglass, new epoxy barrier coat, prime coat and new bottom paint applied, and the running gear (props and shafts) were polished and new propspeed applied.

Gray Matter has a 230-volt 50hz AC electrical system. She is also equipped with a Mastervolt inverter/charger which will function with a 240-volt 60hz source, so she is able to accept shore power in North America.
Interior Layout - General
Boarding is from the side bulwark doors to either side deck, or through the transom from the transom platform. Enter the salon and galley area from the starboard salon door, or the double aft salon doors in the cockpit. The interior woodwork is done in satin varnished teak. Entering from the cockpit through the aft salon door, there is a C-shaped dinette to starboard and lockers to port.
Forward in the salon are the galley extending from the port side across the centerline, the steps up to the pilothouse to starboard, and the steps down to the passageway for access to the staterooms and heads forward.
At the bottom of the steps to the passageway is the engine room door. Just forward and to starboard is the main electrical distribution panel, with inverter and generator control panels, and tank monitoring equipment.
Further and to port is the entrance to the master stateroom which has a California king bed with the master head. Further forward and to starboard is a large storage locker, and then the starboard and port guest staterooms.
The starboard guest stateroom is furnished with two bunk beds aligned longitudinally. The port guest stateroom has two bunk beds, the upper is athwartship and lower one longitudinal. The starboard and port guest staterooms share a head with separate stall shower just forward of them.
Pass through the shared head to the forward guest/crew cabin. There is also access to the forward cabin from a companionway in the foredeck.
The forward crew cabin is fitted with single berths port and starboard, plus pull out pipe berths for overflow sleeping areas – perfect for kids and their friends, or for charter work. It has its head at the forward end of the cabin.
The aft pilothouse is up from the forward end of the salon, conveniently close to the galley. With its commanding view and spacious accommodations, the Nordhavn 62 pilothouse is a wonderful place to spend time. Gray Matter is one of the 62’s with a day head in the pilothouse, just aft of the top of the steps. A crew cabin with two athwartship bunks is aft. There is a dinette area just forward. The operational area of the pilothouse includes an expansive instrument console, with chart table area to starboard, and a Stidd helm chair.
Deck Layout - General
Gray Matter has a stainless steel framed swim step with teak decking that is ideal for mooring stern-to. A transom door leads into the cockpit, and to the port and starboard side decks leading to the foredeck. There are boarding doors through the high bulwarks of both port and starboard side decks.
The aft pilothouse creates a long foredeck with plenty of space for carrying two tenders - which Gray Matter has - one on either side of the davit. Forward, there is a deck storage box. The foredeck companionway provides alternate access to the forward cabin and head. The hydraulic windlass and ground tackle handling gear are mounted in a recessed area forward just aft of the two stainless steel anchor rollers and chain stopper. The anchor locker has a second deck plate and shelves for secondary rode stowage in addition to the main bay for the all-chain primary anchor rode.
Steps from the aft end of the foredeck lead up to the Portuguese bridge and to the pilothouse level side decks. There are port and starboard wing control stations in the Portuguese bridge. The side decks lead aft to an aft deck seating area sheltered by a bimini on a folding frame. There are steps from the seating area to the pilothouse roof for access to antennas and other gear.
An extension aft from the pilothouse deck provides a dedicated life raft mounting platform.
Even with the port side deck, the salon is large and has a very social feel with its versatile dinette and visual connection to the galley. While there is storage to port, there is still room to fit a comfortable chair or two inboard of it.

The pilothouse is perfectly suited to a long range motoryacht. It is isolated yet not far from the sleeping cabins, galley and salon. There is plenty of space to gather in it when desired. The dinette easily seats four. The layout includes the popular day head. In addition, there are two watch bunks aft that are divided from the general space by a bulkhead and door. There are deck hatches over the watch berths and over the day head. Dutch doors port and starboard allow easy pilothouse deck access, especially to the port and starboard wing control stations on the Portuguese bridge. They also provide very effective cross ventilation. To starboard outboard of the helm chair is a chart table. The wheel, main engine electronic controls, wing engine controls, and engine instruments are all within easy reach from the helm chair. A small Norcold drinks refrigerator is under the starboard forward end of the settee.
