Significant Other, a 1996 43' Shannon cutter, is a very strong, comfortable, attractive, high quality, blue water cruising design. She was built for the current owner with a furling boom, roller furling yankee and genoa, water maker, wind vane autopilot, dual refrigeration, and is set up for solo sailing. With her centerboard up she only draws 4'9" making her a perfect choice for the Bahamas or Florida. With the board lowered, windward performance is enhanced. Significant Other is a classic, built by one of America's most experience quality builders. She offers very good performance, exceptional strength, exquisite cherry joinery and electronics package for world cruising.

Shannon Boat Company has a well earned reputation for building beautifully finished offshore yachts. Significant Other is an excellent example of what New England craftsmen can achieve when given the time to do it right. The varnished cherry woodwork with raised panel doors provides a classic ambiance. There is a high gloss grooved white headliner and teak and holly sole with white interior trunks.
Significant Other has a large salon with an L-shaped settee to starboard and a straight settee to port, both covered in a plush fabric. Both settees pull out to form single berths. Above each settee are louvered cabinets and bookshelves. In the forward port cabinet is a Kenwood AM/FM/CD/IPOD stereo player (2009). To starboard is a built-in liquor cabinet behind louvered doors. There is a lovely varnished teak salon dining table that removes easily and stows in a forward locker. The beautiful cherry wood bulkheads have a satin finish. The cabin sole is teak and holly protected by area rugs. There are four chrome reading lights and two mounted fans. All removable floor panels and drawers have chrome pulls.
The forward cabin is separated from the main salon by a privacy door and has an en suite head with vanity, medicine cabinets, lockers, telephone shower and teak shower grating.
The midship salon benefits from the generous beam, multiple opening ports and a deck hatch. Aft to starboard of the salon is the galley, in excellent proximity to the companionway for use in a sea way. Across from the galley is the aft double door head. One head door gives access to the passageway and the second to the aft cabin. The guest cabin to port and aft of the head has a generous double berth, half hanging locker and bureau. There are handrails through the interior, including double ones over the salon. The doors are raised panel cherry, with white insets in the heads.

The spacious U shaped galley with Corian counters is to starboard between the salon and navigation table. There are two refrigeration systems: a Grunert 120 AC Volt/engine driven system and a Frigo Boat 12 Volt compressor system drawing only 5 amps which is ideal when cruising. The Frigo Boat evaporator is ideal for making ice in a short period of time (very important for cocktail time in the islands!) The refrigerator can be accessed from both the top and bottom for ease of use. The freezer is huge and will hold up to a month's supply of food for two. The galley also features generous storage with multiple lockers and drawers; large counter with top access to pot locker; a Force 10 Marine 3 burner stove with oven; Sharp microwave; wooden coffee mug rack; and matching spice rack.
Electronics and Navigation Equipment
The aft navigation station has a full desk with storage under the desk top and in drawers below. A swivel chair is mounted on the sole and the electrical breaker panel is easily accessed when seated. There is a shelf locker outboard of the seat, teak holder for binoculars, and mobile cell phone jack at the nav center led to an antenna at the top of the mast. (Needs amplifier)

Significant Other is a one piece hull with internal ballast (no keel bolts). The rudder is fully protected by the skeg and the propeller is also protected, being mounted in a rudder skeg aperture. She is built with the latest technology and material. Isophthalic gel coat and epoxy bottom primers protect the bottom. A composite core (no balsa) is linear foam with biaxial laminate construction for increased strength with less weight. The hull lamination is also reinforced with Kevlar hybrid laminates in areas subject to excessive impact in grounding situations.
The keel centerboard design has been perfected by Shannon Boat Co for 30 years. The 43 has a modern shoal keel and skeg protected rudder. The centerboard and its pin can be removed without hauling the boat, and the lifting mechanism is a simple-to-use and easy-to-maintain cable, led to a winch in the cockpit. Stability is very good with the board raised and Significant Other can sail to windward without the board being lowered. The board can be lowered to enhance windward performance and, when reaching in heavier wind and sea conditions, to enhance directional control and reduce the pressure on the rudder and helm.

The innovative Shannon Scutter and Sketch rigs were developed in 1994 to improve performance while reducing the work load at sea. The yankee is fitted to the forward headstay and genoa directly aft, both operated with roller furling led to the cockpit.
