The Morris Ocean 44, designed by Chuck Paine and built by Morris Yachts, was awarded Cruising World’s “Bristol Award” for Best Boat of the Year. Morris Yachts has a well-deserved reputation for building boats of the highest quality. The quality of Chuck Paine’s design and Morris construction are evident throughout Acadia Pearl. Morris and Paine got this one right, as they typically do.
The Morris Ocean 44 is the same boat as the better known Morris Ocean 46 – the only difference being that the transom was extended by 18 inches in the 46.
The Morris 44/46 is designed as a modern high performance cruiser, cloaked within a more traditional look and feel, which could be sailed by a shorthanded crew. There are many features to like about this yacht including her safe cockpit and ergonomic deck space. The interior is beautifully laid out, with thought given to ergonomics and function, including access to mechanical and electrical systems.
Each Morris 44/46 was custom built to the owner’s specifications. Each is unique. No two are the same. Interior and external features differ widely from boat to boat.
Acadia Pearl is special. The original owners, who ordered her and specified all interior and exterior features, had a fine eye for esthetics and attention to detail with respect to light, ventilation, warmth, functionality and comfort, as well as being experienced sailors. Acadia Pearl has two enclosed cabins and two heads (one with a separate shower stall). She sleeps up to eight people; four in the two cabins and up to four more in the salon using the convertible double and two single bunks. There is 6 feet 3 inches plus of head room in the main salon and galley.
Elegant, solid, safe, functional, and comfortable are all words that describe Acadia Pearl. Don’t miss the sometimes mundane experience of going down the companionway. There are convenient custom stainless steel handholds mounted on the outside entrance to the companionway. The first step is deep enough front to back to stage gear or turn around. Each step is solid, giving one the feeling of safety at the first step. The last step is lighted by a curtesy light under the step.
Three easy steps from the cockpit transports you into the Herreshoff style interior. The first thing to experience is the warmth, light, air, comfort and safety. You may not notice initially, but a grab rail or handhold is within reach wherever you are in the interior. You will see a balanced blend of white panels and solid cherry trim. Notice some of the subtle features of the satin-finished cherry trim. There is a curve in the trim above many of the lockers, above the doors and in the panels of the cherry doors to the fore and aft cabins and each of the two heads. The headliner is removable white panels with cherry wood batten strips. The floor is a beautiful teak and mahogany. The jewel, blue-green, perhaps teal, upholstery is lightly used, in excellent shape, and complements the ambience of the cherry trim and white panels. Beige Corian counters in the galley and heads nicely accent the interior space.
Each of the seven Alpenglow overhead solid cherry-framed LED lighting fixtures has white and red (night vision) lights, and both the white and red lights are dual power (high/low). Seven Alpenglow dimmable, bulkhead-mounted LED cabin lights serve as reading lights as well as additional ambient light in the evening.
Espar forced air heat plumbed to five vents keeps things snug and warm throughout the interior. On hot days, 13 opening port lights and five opening hatches, combined with six well-placed dorade vents, provide ample ventilation and natural light. Alpenglow LED solid cherry-framed overhead lights and dimmable reading lamps provide warm and energy-efficient lighting when it is dark.
Interior description starting forward and moving aft
The Forward cabin has a V-berth style bunk. This is a large bunk with a removable center insert. Two people sleeping in this bunk need not touch toes (if they don’t want to that is), with plenty of space at the forward end of the bunk. The forward bulkhead has louvered cabinet doors giving access to the chain locker and windlass motor forward. There is a cabin fan on the starboard side of the cabin, well forward. Solid cherry book shelves run the length of the bunk on both sides. There is a large Bomar opening hatch overhead, with a total of three opening stainless steel port lights on the cabin sides. A large prism overhead provides even more natural light. Under the bunk is one of the three stainless water tanks and the forward head holding tank. In the cutout portion of the berth are four drawers and two cabinet spaces. Aft of the bunk on the starboard side is a bank of two drawers and an opening lower cabinet. There is a shelf covering the top of these drawers with a moderate sized cabinet outboard. Aft of the drawers is a cedar lined, insulated hanging locker. The locker doors are louvered and there is shelf space above. As with all the spaces in the boat, forced air heat is plumbed into this cabin.
The forward ensuite head is located on the port side of the forward cabin, aft of the bunk. This head makes good use of space, with an integral shower using the pull out sink faucet. The head itself is a manual Raritan toilet. The sink is integrated into the Corian counter and there is a foot pump for freshwater as well as a pressure hot and cold water faucet. A teak grate allows shower water to drain to the forward automatic sump pump. There is storage in three cabinets in the outboard areas of the head. Additional storage and access to the Marelon sink drain through hull is found under the sink. There is an LED alpenglow light overhead. A stainless opening port light and dorade vent provide ventilation.
Moving aft is the main salon. This cabin has a tremendous feeling of warmth, light, open space and comfort. It features a clear line of sight from the forward bulkhead past the nav station and galley to the companionway. All trim and appointments of the main salon were specified by the original owner and, as a package, are unique to this boat. The solid cherry salon table is on center with fold down drop leafs, and lots of storage under the center portion of the table. There is an L-shaped settee set to port with straight settee to starboard. The L-shaped settee contributes to the open feeling of the salon, provides easy access from the table to the galley counter tops, and facilitates easy 360 degree access to the engine, discussed below in the “engine compartment” section. The salon table will comfortably seat up to seven with the leaves up. The keel stepped mast is just forward of the table near the front of the salon itself and does not disrupt the seating or sight lines in any way. Behind the port and starboard settees is storage. On the port side there are two deep cabinets separated by a deep bookshelf with a low cabinet under the shelf. The port settee has a pull out section under the seat that converts this space into a nice double bunk. On the starboard side there is a pilot berth up and outboard, with a straight settee below. Both the pilot berth and settee have pull out sections making them large single bunks. All the settee spaces (and the floor) in the salon make for excellent sea berths. The night vision red lights in the Alpenglow overhead fixtures in the nav station, galley and main salon facilitate the use of the main salon as the preferred bunk location for passage making. There are ample hand holds on the overhead, bulkheads, and rail under the port lights on both port and starboard. Most of the bulkheads are white panels with cherry trim with the exception being the cabinet doors, which are solid cherry and the cabin side ceilings which are also cherry. The effect is stunning with just the right amount of warmth from the satin finished cherry. LED Alpenglow overhead lights and Alpenglow dimmable LED reading lights provide ample and warm illumination when it’s dark. Overhead are two large Bomar hatches along with multiple opening stainless steel port lights for excellent light and ventilation. The floorboards throughout the interior are a beautiful teak and mahogany finish. And the lifting floorboards are positive locking, further proof of Acadia Pearl’s offshore pedigree. The main salon is a comfortable and pleasant place to spend time, read, talk, or whatever.
The galley is located just aft of the settee on the port side. This is a large U-shaped galley with ample storage and counter space. The dual sink is forward at the bottom of the U and is integrated as part of the Corian counters. Dish drain grooves are molded into the Corian counter top immediately starboard of the starboard-side sink. In addition to the pressure hot and cold water faucet, there are separate foot pumps for fresh water and raw water. To port are the large top loading fridge and freezer space. The three burner Force 10 range is aft and outboard, with a cabinet below. Large two level cabinets run the length of the galley with sliding doors. Dimmable track lights run above these cabinets, providing ample light into the cabinets and onto the stove for cooking. Gadget and silverware drawers are located under the large Corian counter above the engine compartment. A stainless steel opening port light and dorade vent are conveniently located just above the Force 10 range, providing outdoor views, light and ventilation for cooking. Anchors for a galley harness are installed for standing at the stove and sink. The L-shaped settee on the port side of the salon provides convenient access from the galley counters to the salon table. This is a nice no compromise galley, and a pleasant place to be. Like everything on this boat, the designer gave a lot of thought to ergonomics, esthetics, functionality and strength.
The forward facing navigator's station is located on the starboard side across from the galley. This is truly a proper nav space. It has a comfortable contoured seat that keeps the navigator in place when at sea. The table is large enough use as a surface to view a quarter-folded chart. The floor is flat port to starboard, making for comfortable extended sitting. There is ample storage under the lift up table for navigation instruments and a stack of quarter folded paper charts. The TZT 9 Furuno chartplotter and multi-purpose display, Nexus multi display, Icom VHF and Icom SSB, and CD player/AM/FM radio are all located here. (A TZT 14 Furuno display is also installed on the pedestal.) The breaker panels are also at the nav station with an easy-to-open hinged design that provides fantastic access to the very clean and squared away wiring behind. Finish this off with the tried and true design of drawers forward and under the chart table and you gotta hand it to Morris, as the bottom drawer even has an integrated tool box that can be lifted and carried from the cabinet. Under the seat is additional storage and access to the red dot engine heater and some of the electronics components.
The main salon, nav station, and galley are one great open room.
Now to the engine space. On sailboats it’s always a trick to put the engine in a space with adequate access. The 62 hp turbo Yanmar engine is located on center under the large galley counter top to port of the nav station. The design provides 360 degrees of access with hinged opening panels that can also be removed. The L-shaped settee in the main salon, specified by the original owner, provides easy access to the forward side of engine, which was enabled by Chuck Paine’s basic design. In addition to allowing 360 degree access, the engine’s location, at the center of the boat, both fore/aft and port/starboard, contributes to the boat’s stability in heavy seas. It provides the advantages of a center-located engine in an aft-cockpit design.
The aft head is located just aft of the nav table on the starboard side. This is a large head, well positioned just to starboard of the companionway. The counters are Corian with an integrated sink. The head itself is a Vacuflush toilet. Storage can be found under the sink and in cabinets outboard. There is a separate shower stall, with a bench, just aft of the toilet space. The shower stall has a bi-fold panel door for use while showering. Teak grates drain shower water to the aft automatic sump pump. In the shower itself is abundant storage in a locker under the seat, and large a cabinet outboard of the shower stall. There is yet another very large cabinet in the aft section of the shower. Overhead in the shower is an opening hatch, protected by the dodger. There are two opening port lights, one in the head and the other in the shower stall. The aft head has two Alpenglow solid cherry overhead light fixtures, one in the head and another, a water resistant, splash guard model, in the shower stall. Overall, this is a fantastic head space and standup shower.
The aft cabin is located to port just aft of the galley. This enclosed cabin has a very large, nearly queen size bunk with a removable insert. There is ample storage under the bunk. Access to the steering quadrant is through a removable panel at the aft bulkhead of this cabin. Unlike many aft cabins, this cabin has plenty of space and headroom to get dressed. There are two drawers and a lower cabinet with a shelf above. Outboard and above the drawers is another cabinet. A deep horizontal chart locker is located over the bunk. Another deep cabinet is located over the chart cabinet. There is also a cedar lined hanging locker that has been converted to a pantry space because of its close proximity to the galley. The shelves can easily be removed if one wished to use as a hanging locker. The aft cabin features an overhead Alpenglow solid cherry-framed LED light and an Alpenglow bulkhead-mounted dimmable reading light. Two opening port light face outboard, and an additional opening port light opens into the cockpit, under the port cockpit seat. A large prism overhead, through the cockpit deck, provides additional natural light. A small Bomar hatch is overhead, under the protection of the dodger.
Acadia Pearl is Morris through and through, exhibiting quality and craftsmanship. She shows incredible pride of ownership from top to bottom and will not disappoint.

Construction is a solid fiberglass “Rib-Kore” reinforced hull utilizing vinylester resin. The Keel is a contemporary bulb designed with the bulb being flattened. Even though she has a shoal draft at 5’6”, the design provides a low VCG. Combine that with her Chuck Paine designed hull form stability and Acadia Pearl can be sailed with lower heeling angles, providing comfort and safety for the crew while underway. The rudder is balanced, hung on a ¾ length skeg, and has a custom manganese bronze heel casting bearing plate. The prop shaft is protected. Acadia Pearl has a built-in grounding system for the SSB. It also sports a built-in, functional teak rub-rail with a stainless steel half oval strip. Acadia Pearl has many custom/optional features, one being a built in stainless steel bow eye installation.
In 2014, upon delivery for her current owners in Portland Oregon, Schooner Creek Boatworks stripped the bottom paint down to the gelcoat, then applied epoxy barrier coats and final applications of bottom paint. In October of 2016 the bottom paint was renewed.
The hull topsides are a custom pearl, blue/gray gelcoat accented with white Awlgrip boot and whale stripes. The topsides sparkle with the application of liquid glass, most recently in October of 2016.

The deck is a tasteful beige nonskid paint over white gelcoat. The cap rails are teak finished bright along with a teak eyebrow cabin-top trim and cockpit coaming. The hull and deck gelcoat and paint show pride of ownership and are in near flawless condition, as is the teak brightwork. The working deck exudes safety with a tall bulwark, easy to grasp stainless handrails going forward on the cabin top, and solid anchors for jack lines. The stern pulpit extends all the way around the transom up to the lifeline gates which are forward of the cockpit. The lifelines themselves are tall, standing 30-inches high! There is a dual anchor roller allowing for a primary and secondary anchor. Excellent ventilation is achieved below with six dorade vents, multiple opening hatches and stainless port lights. In heavy seas, each dorade vent can be sealed closed with a threaded cap located in each of the dorade boxes. A soft dodger protects the companionway and extends far enough aft to afford protection from the elements for sailors in the cockpit. The cockpit is large, with long cockpit and helm seats that are suitable for entertaining while at the dock are on the hook. A varnished teak folding table attaches to the pedestal guard. It’s a safe cockpit with high combings for comfort. The port and starboard seats are a comfortable distance apart to allow the crew to prop their feet on the leeward seat while at sea. Additional seating for the helms-person is behind the wheel. There is ample storage with a shallow locker under the port seat, and a deep and spacious lazarette (sail locker) under the starboard seat. A line locker and more storage is found under the helm seat, and two lazarettes (port and starboard) aft of the cockpit. Check out the manner in which the combing wraps around the winches. This is a stylish, yet very functional seagoing setup that experienced mariners will appreciate. Morris definitely got this one right (as they often do!)

The mast and boom are a custom Omohundro three spreader carbon rig and carbon boom. This is a sloop rig with the addition of a removable cutter stay for versatility in sail choices in heavy weather. Upon delivery from Maine to Portland Oregon, her current owners had the mast and boom properly prepped and repainted in white Awlgrip. The mast’s internal wiring, the masthead wind sensor and the Aquasignal tri-color were all replaced. Ian Weedman, a respected rigger who cut his teeth with Brian Toss and Port Townsend Rigging, completely went through the mast and rigging. Over 2015 and 2016 all the running rigging has been replaced by Mr.Weedman except the mainsheet. This is a squared away, ready to go mast. Her cruising carbon design makes for a dependable low CG sailing platform and the added benefit of higher performance is nice
