This is one of the most popular performance cruising boats in Europe and particularly in France where they are built. It fact, this vessel well regarded as a high quality modern performance cruiser with some unique design features that would make it extremely popular here in the states with so many depth challenged cruising grounds available. This is hull number 25 of the Ovni 36 series built by Alabat until 2005. Hull no 25 has an added transom platform making the boat 38 feet overall and extending the waterline significantly. The hard chine design gives the vessel significant form stability when she heels 10 degrees. And in fact, the lifting keel adds little additional stability, but is used to add windward performance, or improved tracking when reaching off the wind. With the lifting keel up, the boat draws an astounding 1.7 feet! With the keel down, the draft of 6.7 feet gives the boat reliable windward performance. This is the vessel of choice for the reknowned world cruiser Jimmy Cornell and is a swift passagemaker. Once sailors in this part of the world figure out that this capable vessel gives you comfort and safety offshore and also allows you to tuck into the safest anchorages in the Exumas or the Chesapeake Bay and navigate the Intercoastal if you want or maybe dock in your creek or shallow bay, I expect we’ll see a lot more Ovni here. The vessel has three staterooms, two mirrowed aft cabins port and starboard and a small v-berth cabin forward, which has been used primarily for storage. The galley to port is adequate. The nav station to starboard works. The salon is spacious with a large table that incorporates the lifting keel trunk. The head is forward to port. The cockpit is spacious with proper winch placement. The swim platform is remarkable and gives you a great platform for swimming, diving and fishing. Another unique design feature is the transom arch that is canted back at a pleasing angle to incorporate the dinghy davits. In addition to looking perfect, it gives you a great spot to mount solar panels and wind generators.

Designed by Phillippe Briand, the Ovni 385 is a hard chined aluminum vessel with a lifting keel and rudder. The vessel is extreamly strong. It is built of marine grade aluminum alloy with thick 8mm plating around the keel box and along the centerline, with 6mm plates to the first chine, and 4mm plating up to the deck. The coach roof and house sides are 6mm to 4 mm plates. The plates are welded onto a stout framework of T bars and stringers. The internal lead ballast is encapsulated in a waterproof resin and sealed in an aluminum casing. The hull is protected with an epoxy coating inside to the waterline. Above the waterline the hull is insulated with foam insulation.
