A very popular racing design from the early ‘90s with great cruising comfort for short-handed sailing and a new Nordic mast in 2007.
The IMX-38 is a wonderful, sexy-looking boat with sweeping lines and the promise of plenty of boat speed, the IMX 38 was developed and launched in 1993.
Her pedigree as an offshore racer is well established and she was chosen as the offshore racer of the year in 1996. She has not been raced in recent years, but all the go fast potential is still onboard!
The big surprise for a racing boat is her touring capabilities. Although she is best raced with a crew of 6 up to 8, she can also be easily sailed by two people. The rigging with its slightly back swept three spreader configuration is forgiving and the mast mounted directly onto the keel with the typical X-yacht steel frame, forms an incredibly stiff platform.
You wouldn’t expect luxurious accommodations from this type of boat, and the 38 won’t surprise you in that area. The layout is straightforward with a small galley forward and a large head that stretches across the boat. The photos show this interior to be beautifully detailed and artfully styled. It may not be plush, but it does look comfy.
In the stern a very large double always surprises first time viewers. The bow accommodates a regular sized double with toilet and a sink. It is possible to shower there, although experience says that using the shower outside is much nicer.
In the stern on the starboard side there is a very roomy single. There are also removable pipe beds very suitable for safe overnight passage-making.
The Volvo MD 2030 is a reliable, easy to maintain engine and probably one of the most common engines in this size of boat so maintenance is easily organised.

X-Yachts developed the IMX-38 as a modern, well designed, well thought-out, reasonably sized, one-design yacht suitable for offshore and day racing, built to a high standard at a reasonable price.
The IMX 38 was designed with a full, modern, racing deck layout, but rather than a tiller, she is equipped with wheel steering.
The choice of rig for the IMX 38 is a modern three-spreader mast head rig which has a relatively large mainsail and smaller headsails than the traditional mast head configuration.
The mast section, developed specially for the IMX 38, is strong enough to be able to withstand mishandling from a less experienced crew, yet light and flexible enough to satisfy the most experienced racing sailor.
The IMX 38 is not just a racing yacht. Down below are all the cruising amenities needed for an extended family cruise in comfort.
Sails & Rigging
New Nordic Mast in 2007
All sails are in good conditions and still good for local racing. For heavier racing program, the mainsail needs to be changed.
