Designed by Ron Holland with an interior by ken Freivokh, Marlin DelRey V was built by Lurssen Shipyard. She is 40.5m (132.7 ft.) long, 9.2 meters (30.2 ft.) in beam and displaces 232 tons. Her ketch rig sets over 750 squares meters (8300 sq. ft.) of sail, which can be increased by another 600 square meters (6400 sq. ft.) downwind.
A very stable yacht, in keeping with the requirements of the owner. The stabilization criteria is to heel no more than 20 degrees when close hauled carrying full sail in Beaufort Force 6 and associated sea conditions. This is a particularly severe requirement when one considers the speed this yacht will achieve under the conditions and hence the higher apparent wind. This requirement was met, even without the use of her 5 tons ballast tanks, primarily due to greater than average beam and the use of a low resistance large volume bulb keel and Lurssen’s close attention to weight calculations.
The Ken Freivokh designed paneled interior has been conceived to discreetly retain all the benefits of the latest electronics and control systems. As on deck, the essential priority was the creation of an environment designed to be fully operational under way, reflecting the owner’s experience and committed sailing program.
The yacht has a large deck saloon, with a doorway giving access to the open cockpit area aft. These areas are served by a dumb waiter lift allowing convenient service of meals from the galley below. This modular design approach ensured that the deck saloon is particularly spacious and airy, the windows allow a panoramic view all around the yacht. An inside steering position occupies the forward end of the deck house, with convenient access directly onto the side decks.
The owner’s accommodation is in the centre of the yacht, with two double guest cabins aft. Between the two are galley, crew mess and utility room, which provides the facilities for the crew to look after the yacht and her guests in an appropriate standard. Conventionally, the crew cabins are placed forward.
The rig consists of fully battened main and mizzen, with roller furling headsails. The high performance expectations of the yacht did not allow compromises associated with internally furling sails. Sail handling deck equipment is a sensible mixture of captive and open drum winches, with genoa and saysail mizzen sheets and runners on Lewmar line management systems. This adds a measure of security since the majority of the problems associated with captive winches relate to the fluctuating loads of a flogging sail and not with the more uniform loading of a mainsheet or runner.
The yacht has a large capacity of battery power installed, and two 50 kilowatt generators providing three phase power or hydraulic power for her 50 hp retractable Richfield bow and stern thrusters. Hers main engine is an MTU 12V 183 engine of 750 HP (550kW) driving a Hundested variable pitch propeller.
The entire interior, including the crew quarters, is finished in a raised panel cherry with burled elm inserts designed by Ken Freivokh. Accommodations for the Owner's party are in three or four staterooms, with a large salon located at main deck level.
Upon entering the yacht, an elegant deck salon provides a panoramic view of the surrondings. A large sofa with two easy chairs and coffee table are located to port.
Starboard is a large burled elm dining table with U-shaped settee and three upholstered dining chairs, providing elegant seating for eight. A desk finished in the same style is just forward of this area. Forward of this area is the instrument console and main navigation station. There are watertight doors to port and starboard of the navigation console.
Walking forward, down four steps, is a passageway offset to starboard that continues forward to the crew quarters. Along the outboard side of this forward passageway is a large freezer and special built-in storage for vacuum cleaners, dry goods, inverters, technical manuals, linens and towels. The master stateroom is accessed from this passageway.
Continuing forward along the passageway, a door leads to the crew quarters, in this area there are four cabins. The captain's cabin/fourth guest cabin has a full queen size berth and the other three have upper and lower berths. Each cabin has fully tiles ensuite baths with stall showers. All toilets were new in 2012.
Moving aft from the deck salon, four steps curve down around on centerline and lead aft. Off this passageway to port is electrical control room and starboard is a large utility room with a big airing cabinet, washer/dryer and access to the engine room. Aft off this bright, wide passageway is the crew mess and communications room located to starboard. A large, well-equipped galley is on the port side. Aft are two additional guest staterooms with access to the aft deck via stairway.
The deck cockpit features a raised helm station with instruments, secondary radar and controls for the thrusters and captive winches. This area provides the helmsman with a 360-degree view of the yacht. Comfortable seating and tables are arranged, both port and starboard, aft of the helm station.
The master stateroom is large, well laid out and luxurious. Located on the aft bulkhead is a king size bed with full walk-in dressing room located aft to port. A lounge area with sofa and coffee table is to starboard while forward to port is a sofa and desk. The long sofas quickly convert to very comfortable sailing berths with lee cloths. A lady's illuminated vanity is located on the forward bulkhead. His and her tiled bathrooms are forward.
There are two lovely guest staterooms each with side-by-side single berths, desk and large fully tiled ensuite bathroom. A separate deck access is located just aft of the guest staterooms.
