Age of Russia (Wek Rossii or BEK POCCИИ) was built circa 1992 in St Petersburg (formerly Leningrad) at the Russian Space Center where all major space projects from Sputnik to the Buran Space Shuttle were built. The St Petersburg Yacht Club, one of the oldest in the world, had the vessel built in all carbon and was the first attempt by the Russian's to compete in the America's Cup but failed to race due to competence disputes between Moscow and St Petersburg and at the end due to a lack of money. Flown to San Deigo but never launched she was held in San Deigo as a bank deposit until 1995 when she went up for sale as a bare hull. She was modified and reclassified in 2000 as RUS-62 for a Russian candidate who withdrew his challenge. She sailed as a tourist attraction along with America II (see AC 1987 "Geronimo") for a British Columbia company until 2003. The current owner purchased the vessel in 2006 and outfitted her for cruising. | ||
