1988/9 Hylass 44 Centre Cockpit

This highly sought after; two owner, blue water yacht is truly a find for the serious cruiser. She is fully outfitted for long distance cruising and/or living aboard. She has never been used for charter work, and so has always been cared for and maintained by the owners.

Her shallow draft due to the Scheel keel allows her a greater choice of anchorages unreachable by other sailing craft. Having said that, Lusty Wench is more than comfortable traversing any of the oceans in the world as we have proved by sailing to the Caribbean from Chesapeake Bay, Virginia followed by crossing the Atlantic via Bermuda to the Azores and on from there to Falmouth in south west England. Each crossing she handled well and only increased our faith in her plus she has an extensive electronics package including an up-to-date Garmin Chartplotter, and safety accessories including epirb 406. She also carries a full set of sails.

The paint job on the hull being a beautiful deep blue with cherry red trim was carried out in early 2011 by professionals whilst hauled out at Marti Marina, Orhaniye.

The layout is designed for the serious cruiser, with plenty of living space, rather than cramming in as many berths as possible. It is a cosy interior, with lots of real wood and a horseshoe shaped settee fitted around the table with inlaid decoration. The expertly crafted teak joinery sets off the velour upholstery, completely renewed in 2011, matches throughout the boat and is just as comfortable as it looks. All compartments have fans and and bronze reading lights. The headroom is good throughout, with room for a 6 foot 1 inch (1.85m) man to stand upright nearly everywhere below (tested by the editor!). Overhead lights are generously positioned around the interior, as are grab rails and teak and holly sole throughout. This is a real cruising yachtsman's yacht.

Forward Vee Berth and Forward Head
The forward berth demonstrates the excellent use of space and teak detail. A double berth is set on an angle to port, with a small bench seat to starboard. At the far end, a teak hatch accesses the anchor locker. On each side there are 2 cupboards with louvre doors and a large open locker, with teak retaining rail. Aft to starboard is a large hanging locker with teak louvre door, opposite to port is the private door to the forward head and shower. Ventilation is provided by two opening overhead hatches.

Moving aft, to port is the forward head and shower, which is paneled in beige Formica accented with varnished teak. The facilities include a Jabsco marine toilet, sink, vanity unit and telephone shower. There are three mirrored cabinets above the sink. Water from the shower falls in to the sump with teak floor grid, drained by electric pump. Ventilation is provided by dorade and by an opening light.

To starboard, opposite the forward head, are a shelf and cupboard fitted out for drinks storage, with another large cupboard below. As these form part of the salon area, they are crafted from teak to match the workmanship of that area.

The main salon consists of an inlaid table, with a curved bench seat to port wrapping around it. Opposite, to starboard a bench seat provides a spacious seat for three and also pulls out to provide a ¾ double berth fitted with lee cloths for passage-making. Above each settee are two cupboards with louvre doors and a large open locker between them providing storage for books and DVD's. The mast is covered in hand stitched leather to blend into the décor. Ventilation is provided by two opening hatches and an additional opening port light. In addition fixed lights provide daylight to make this a bright and homely area.

Opposite to port is the nav station. AC and DC electrical panels and control switches are adjacent to the bench seat. The chart table lid is hinged for chart storage. VHF and SSB radio, as well as CD player and radio. The display is an integrated t unit which provides chartplotter and radar display. Photo is also under "Electrical"

The engine is mounted amidships, with teak sound-insulated doors, with shelves inside for storage of tools and engine sundries. This leaves two access routes to the master cabin, either through the galley, or past the nav station and through the aft shower and bathroom.

Aft Head
The aft shower and head is fitted with a retractable teak stripped seat, with Jabsco marine toilet below. Storage is provided by a large cupboard, with another access door to the engine bay opposite. A teak grid and electric pump provide shower drainage. Ventilation is provided by an opening port light. A shower curtain separates the head from the bathroom, which has three mirrored cupboards above a worktop edged in teak, with inlaid sink. Cupboards below provide additional storage, and a second grid allows for efficient drainage. Ventilation is by a dorade and an opening port light.

Master Stateroom
The master cabin is suitably large and comfortable. It has an island berth centrally sited in the boat. It is a "queen" sized width (slightly reduced at the foot for ease of access. Again there is a huge amount of storage finished in teak wood, including hanging space and a built-in teak vanity unit. An open locker on each side is flanked by two cupboards with louvre doors . Ventilation is by a large opening hatch and by three opening port lights.

The Galley
The galley is well equipped with six cupboards at eye level with plate and dish racks below. Moving aft below the worktop are a set of four drawers with retractable cutting board, the Broadwater two-burner gimbaled stove, which burns butane, propane and lpg for ease of use when on passage and when encountering different gas suppliers. Aft of the stove are the fridge and freezer, both equipped with DC frig-o-boat units which minimise power usage and for economy of use, they are top-opening, with the lids forming part of the generous worktop space. Under the companionway stairs is another worktop area, equipped with two deep stainless sinks, hot and cold pressure water and foot pumps for both fresh and saltwater supply.

The cockpit is situated in the centre of the boat, and is definitely a dual-purpose area. When under way, it is the nerve centre of the vessel, with all the instruments in clear view, and the winches conveniently placed for sailing. When berthed in fine weather it is the social meeting place. It has a solid teak folding table with bench seating for six. There are also 5 floatable foam cushions for comfort. The Edson steering pedestal integrates with the cupholders and teak drop-leaf cockpit table, and is also attached to the Navpod Grand-Prix series chartplotter mount, providing a good level of security for the instruments. A stainless steel boarding ladder with wooden treads is mounted amidships to port, with a stainless steel 2-step boarding ladder opposite to starboard. Winslow 6 person life raft serviced 2008. Large davit arch in stainless with aerials and flagpole and dinghy (caribe 12' rib) hoist. The davit arm for hoists the 8hp 2-stroke Evinrude outboard. The port stern lazarette is fitted with a fresh-water shower connection. Windscoop, fenders, boathook, horseshoe lifebuoy, anchor snubber and mooring lines etc. Six stainless attached hinged backrests in the cockpit. Teak cockpit grates and various cushions for comfortable life above deck in fine weather. Dodger and Bimini, with two 80W solar panels linked to the controller for the Eclectic Energy D400 wind generator, making a formiddable power generation system. There is considerable under-floor storage for extended cruising.Cockpit, Helm and Deck

Deck hardware and miscellaneous
The anchor system is based around two anchors each with its own roller. The roller to windlass deck is protected by a stainless steel plate. The windlass is a Maxwell VW1200 (re-conditioned in 2010) which handles 2 anchors, each equipped with 45m 10mm chain and rode to make a total of 100m each. The primary anchor is a CQR 20kg, with a Bruce 30Kg as a backup. There are also a 15Kg CQR and a Danforth as reserves. Sea-water electric pumped wash down at bow, for cleaning anchors.

The winches are all manufactured by Barient - two #32ST 2-speed primaries, two #27ST 2-speed secondaries, two #24ST 2-speed reefing winches and one #24ST 2-speed main sheet winch. Mast mounted winches are #24 main halyard, #22 spinnaker halyard and #24 genoa halyard.

Lights and instruments are 12v supply powered by four 6v golf cart batteries. The system is managed by a Heart 2000 controller managing the charging from the Balmar and stock alternator. The Eclectic Energy D400 wind generator also provides regulated power (with built-in overload control) to the same system. The engine and windlass also have their own separate batteries. There is a main power inverter which supplies AC 110v current to the house circuits, and two small inverters for 110v and 220v spot usage.

Electronics
The chartplotter system consists of two touch-screen units - Garmin 5215 (15" screen) at the nav station, linked to a second touch-screen - Garmin 5212 (12" screen) at navpod unit at the helm. The system receives AIS information (Milltech SR162) and integrates radar (Garmin GMR 18HD) and chart information into a single display. The chartplotters integrate by a sea-talk network to the other instruments. These include Raymarine ST6000 autopilot, ST60 wind direction and speed, ST60 depth and ST60 boat speed. A Garmin GPS128 unit, with the display in the cockpit acts as a backup for navigation. Alpine CD/radio (with input lead for iPod) feeds 4 speakers 2 in cockpit and 2 in the salon (2 more in master cabin not hooked up). VHF radio Raymarine Ray 53 with a Raymarine Ray 48 as a backup at the helm. ACR Satellite 406 Epirb. Xintex S-2 Propane fume and control unit. The step-up step-down 220v to 110v transformer handles 3KVA with ease, when plugged into shore power.

Sails and rigging
The mainsail was replaced in Falmouth, England in 2009 with a laminated dacron fabric (Hydra-Net 9oz US) fully battened with 3 slab reef points. The roller furler mechanism was replaced in 2009 and hosts the 150% Genoa with UV Cover. The Asymmetrical spinnaker was replaced in 2010. There is also a spare 100% high clew jib and a spare mainsail. All sails are in excellent shape. The rigging includes a keel stepped mast and features a hydraulic backstay tensioner, and Seldon rigid boom vang. A baby stay runs to a vertical ss rod that runs to the keel in the forward berth.

Mechanical
Yanmar 4JH4-TE 75 HP, FWC turbo diesel engine with 1500 hours, new in 2008, driving a Max-prop feathering 3 blade propeller (re-conditioned in 2011). Racor fuel/water separator, with priming bulb. Espar D5LC diesel fired forced air heater, with outlets in all cabins. Seaward 24 litre hot water tank heated electrically from shore power, or by engine. Oil-change electric pump, electric bilge pump (auto and manual) and whale gusher manual bilge pump
