The Freedom 36 is a unique boat with its most noticeable characteristic, the unstayed carbon fiber mast that has become the hallmark of all the Freedom Yachts. The Freedom design was the brain child of Garry Hoyt in the early 70s. Hoyt approached Everett Pearson pioneer in the fiberglass boatbuilding industry and one of the founders of Pearson Yachts to build these boats.
Tillotson-Pearson took on the Freedom line, establishing a reputation for Freedom yachts as top-end, high-quality production boats. Ultimately, Hoyt sold the company to Tillotson-Pearson.
One of the first moves of the new owners was to revamp the Freedom line. The company commissioned new designs from California-based naval architect Gary Mull, well known for his race boats and his wholesome race/cruiser designs. The Freedom 36 was the first Mull design and went out of production in 1989.
Most traditional sailors would describe the new designs as big catboats, with the enormous-diameter mast set well forward, but they do carry a vestigial jib and are technically sloops. All Freedoms are rigged with the aim of simple handling that as always been associated with the line.
The Freedom is a well manufactured high end boat with a great deal of attention to every detail. This boat has more space on decks and below decks than many boats in this size range and even larger. She is easy to sail with fully battened mainsail and self-tacking jib. Avanti, has been well cared for and lightly used boat. Call today for more information.

Both the hull and deck of the Freedom 36 are fiberglass with Contourkore balsa core throughout. The fiberglass itself is a laminate of E-glass mat ad stitched unidirectional fiberglass, with vinylester barrier resins in the exterior layer of the hull below the waterline. The outside layer is an isophtalic gelcoat.
One of the biggest advantages to the balsa coring is the thermal and acoustic insulation it provides. Condensation problems inside the hull are greatly reduced and the hull has a solid, quiet feel to it going through waves.
Avanti has a deep draft fin keel with external lead casting, bolted to the hull.
In 2011, the hull bottom was stripped to gel coat; applied to coats of epoxy sealant; then 2 coats Z-Spar 94 high copper hard anti-fouling, black paint were applied.
As you would expect with the long waterline, short overhangs and wide beam, the area belowdecks is huge. As you enter the boat you will notice both the beautiful interior cabinetry that is flawless grain teak satin varnish with gloss trim, and the teak and holly cabin sole.
The U-shaped galley is to port there are deep double S/S sinks, hot and cold pressurized water, with beautiful teak wood covers backed with cutting boards or, may be used to extend counter space. There is a very large dry storage locker, gimbaled 3 burner LPG stove with oven, and Adler Barbour refrigerator/freezer and lots of storage space. A garbage trap in the aft bulkhead lets you drop stuff into a wastebasket stored in the cockpit locker. Now if someone would just come up with some similar way to store your returnable cans and bottles.
Opposite the galley to starboard is an ample chart table and navigation station with swing out seat. Conveniently located above the table is the electrical panel, battery switches and space to mount electronics.
Behind the nav station also to starboard is the aft. cabin. It is most under the starboard cockpit seat, is also good-sized, with a bureau, hanging locker, and decent headroom inside the door.
The main cabin is large, with L shaped settee to port around a table which folds up against the forward bulkhead. There is another settee to starboard, the interior upholstery is updated with a beautiful light gray ultra sued that shows little wear. The table can be folded out so that the starboard settee can become outboard seat for a very large dinning table. There is a great deal of storage: to starboard and forward is a cabinet with opening doors above and below; behind the settee backs and below the port settee with ample cabinets and shelves above them. The main salon has a true 6' 4" headroom.
Forward and to port is the head which is accessible from the main salon and forward stateroom. The head is roomy, primarily molded fiberglass there formica countertop around the vanity with S/S sink with hot and cold pressurized water. Above and below the vanity are storage cabinets.
Forward is a large main or captain's cabin with a V-Berth which can be made into a comfortable double by using an insert in the "V". As mentioned, for privacy, the head can be accessed from this stateroom. There is bureau and hanging locker to starboard offering comfortable accommodation for captain or crew.
There is good stowage under the V-berth and in the small forepeak--in fact, this boat generally has more storage than is common in many boats of it's size.
Avanti, offers comfortable accommodations whether you are day sailing or off-shore cruising.
