This 1987 40 Mainship is a good example of a used but cared for vessel. This is the owners 5th season with the boat and she has proven to be a good boat. The current owners purchased her in Maryland on the Serven River from the second owner who had her for years prior.
Second Chance is equipped with twin 454 Crusaders and a Kohler 7.5 generator. One engine has just shy of 800 hrs. and the other has a couple of hundred hrs. less. The genny as it does not have a meter. Both the engines and genny run well. The owners have continued to maintain and refresh Second Chance proactively. Since the current owners have owned her the have replaced all of the 10 portholes and the one aft overhead hatch. The three hatches forward are in good working condition. They replaced the carpet the season they purchased the boat as well as the headliner in the aft stateroom and carpeted wall liners. The wall coverings and headliner in the aft head were also refreshed. The forward stateroom is original with exception to the carpet. They replaced both heads with Ratarian macerating bowls two seasons ago. They also installed a new microwave the year the vessel was purchased and last season installed new NorCold AC/DC Fridge/Freezer. Also installed has been a new shore power connector, a secondary breaker panel and lines to the main panel.
The current owners anchor out most weekends so needed good battery power. The group 27 batteries were replaced with 2 - 8D batteries. These serve as both the house and starting batteries with the generator having its own starting battery. They replaced the heat exchanger and various cellinods on the generator. Over the seasons Second Chance has had its home in CT, the owners have replaced the raw water pumps, mufflers, belts and hoses. This past winter we had new risers, manifolds and elbows installed. We replaced the forward locker door on the bow and the ground tackle.
On her flybridge she has a hard top and canvas curtains as well as a Bimini over the aft deck and a canvas surround. Captain Navy is the color. They removed the vast array of old electronics on the bridge and installed a Garmin 4212 and a HD radar before we brought the boat from MD to CT along with a ICOM 502. We removed the helm chair, cushions and bumper pads on the bridge three seasons ago as well as replaced the mates chair. At the lower helm we installed a standard Horizon 10” color chart plotter and a ICOM remote handset and replaced the lower unit steering pump.
We think the boat shows well – She is 26 years old but shows and runs like a much newer boat. The systems on the boat are in working order. She is in the water in Mystic CT.
