"Cobalado" is an ideal size cruiser/racer with the desirable shoal draft keel. The O'Day 40 sails beautifully -- a responsive, fast passage-maker. This vessel has been carefully maintained and is in great condition. Her Westerbeke diesel (46 hp) is professionally serviced.
Below, her 2 sleeping-cabin interior layout offers privacy for two couples. There is a generous V berth in the forepeak, and a spacious aft cabin with surprising amount of room for a 40 foot boat. She has a spacious salon with dinette to port and settee to starboard. She has a roomy galley and a dedicated nav station. The interior is done in teak, with a number of custom cabinets. She has the storage and tankage for extended cruising.
Cobalado has been cared for by the same couple for 15 years. She is reluctantly for sale since the owners are leaving boating. We are looking for a new owner who will enjoy her. She is kept at our docks at Matthews Point Marina.

Beautiful, Practical Cruising
The O'Day 40 has a great hull design by Philippe Briand. It handles and sails beautifully. It offers a walkout stern and swim platform, good side deck space, and a comfortable cockpit. The rig is substantial and appropriately sized for this boat.
The hull is foam cored. The deck is balsa-cored, and solid glass is used where equipment is attached. The interior shows no signs of leaks. The owners have replaced hatches as needed, most recently (2014) the aft hatch and two others.
Sail handling convenience is provided by substantial Barlow 27 2 speed, self-tailing primary winches and two Barlow 23 self-tailing secondary winches. In addition, two winches are provided on the mast to assist with raising the main and managing the outhaul. The traveler is mounted on the cabin top, where it doesn't complicate movement in the cockpit but where its controls are in easy reach.
"Cobalado" has two genoas (110 and 130) as well as a full-batten main with slab reefing and two reef points. It also has a spinnaker and pole.
The current owners have invested in great canvas for this boat. There is a recent dodger, bimini, and connector to completely cover the cockpit. In addition, there are panels with windows and screens to completely enclose the cockpit.
"Cobalado" is offered with dinghy (10 foot, roll-up with wood floor) and 5.5 HP Nissan outboard. There is a custom Sunbrella cover to protect the dinghy when not in use. The owners also have provided a custom "crane" for ease in raising and lowering the dinghy's outboard motor.
To complement this hull and rig, Raymond Hunt & Associates designed a comfortable and practical interior. The virtues of this interior include lovely teak, a usable, practical aft cabin and excellent engine access. The boat has central AC and heat.
This boat was designed to be cruised and enjoyed!
Finished in teak, this O'Day 40 has a warm, inviting, and practical interior. There are three primary cabins, and a head.
In the bow is a large private cabin with V Berths that can be combined into a comfortable double. This cabin offers shelves along the hull sides, drawers, and an area for dressing. There is an overhead hatch.
Just aft of the bow cabin, and to port, is the head. It has a vanity, sink, h/c pressure water, and "telephone" shower head. There is a shower seat over the toilet, sump pump, and privacy door.
Just aft of the forward cabin, to starboard, is a hanging locker and bureau with drawers.
Next aft is the main salon. There is a comfortable, U-shaped dinette to port that can be used as a roomy double bed. There is a fixed centerline drop-leaf table. To starboard is a settee. Aft of the dinette is a roomy galley with double sink, roomy top-loading refrigerator, LP stove with oven, and generous cabinet space. Aft of the settee is a separate navigation station with desk and seat, lockers, and chart storage. The electrical panels are located here.
The good design sense of Raymond Hunt & Associates is evident in the aft cabin. There is a roomy double berth, athwartships. The berth has enough headroom that even a claustrophobic sailor will feel at ease. Extensive custom teak cabinets offer terrific storage. There's a convenient bench where one can read or get dressed. It's rare to find such a usable aft cabin in a sailboat of less than 45 feet!
A great feature of the O'Day 40 is its engine access. The front and top of the Westerbeke are easily accessed by removing the companionway ladder. There are side panels in the aft cabin and the galley to access the sides of the engine. The back of the engine and transmission are accessed through a hatch under the aft cabin's bunk. A real convenience is that engine filters and dipstick are easy to access -- they are accessed through the panel in the aft cabin. This thoughtfulness makes daily checks a snap -- no need disassemble the companionway to check the oil level!
Powered by a well-maintained Westerbeke 46 HP engine, serviced regularly by a professional mechanic. The starter was replaced in 2013. Engine oil is changed regularly. There is a 110 amp alternator on this engine, and a 3 stage voltage regulator.
The engine hours meter has been replaced, so that total hours are uncertain. However, the hours are believed to be average for a boat of this age, and the engine has always been reliable.
"Cobalado" carries the tankage for extended cruising by a couple:
- 40 gals fuel.
- 107 gals water.
- 25 gals holding tank, connected to a Y valve for dockside pumpout or macerator discharge where legal.
This vessel carries a 20 lb propane tank in a proper propane locker in the transom.
The galley includes a two-burner LP range with oven, top-loading refrigerator, double sink with H/C water, and great storage for pots, pans, plates, glasses, and silverware. There is a microwave for added convenience.
