IN THE OWNERS WORDS: In 2008, after years of searching, we finally found our dream cruising boat - a Tayana 37. She was in beautiful condition, with very light usage, and had been lovingly maintained by her previous three owners. In the last four years Anam cara, as we named her, (Gaelic for "Soul Friend") has taken us safely throughout the Caribbean to paradises we never even dreamed of before setting off cruising.
The cruising life we chose, has been by far the most gratifying thing we have ever done! The boat is fully equipped for extensive cruising and ready to take a new owner to the destination of his or her dreams. Our plans have only changed due to an ageing and ailing parent that draws us back to the land.
Anam Cara had many pluses when we bought her in 2008: no teak decks (never had!), an excellently maintained Yanmar engine with low engine hours, beautiful interior woodwork, a heap of spares, a good RIB dinghy, recently removed and inspected chain plates, an offshore life-raft, monitor windvane, KISS windgenerator and much, much more. But to equip her for true blue water cruising, she needed some additional equipment and modifications, which we have added over the course of the four years we have owned her.
Below is a list of all the gear we have installed and the upgrades we have given her.
1. New full batten mainsail made by Doyle Sails with a stack-pack for ease of sail storage. This is a wonderful addition to the boat! We also added a strong track to the mast for ease of raising and lowering the mainsail.
2. New 95% jib with Profurl roller furling. The jib was also made by Doyle sails, and the roller furling makes it so easy to operate the jib!
3. Raymarine C-80 chartplotter interfaced with a new Raymarine radar. Wouldn't go cruising without it!
4. A satellite based communication system (SKYMATE) which allows us to send/receive emails aboard, send out position reports via email, and obtain weather information. It also has an emergency call system
5. New ablative bottom paint.
6. New yanmar engine mounts and a complete inspection of the engine by a yanmar specialist who told us that our yanmar was the best engine of its age he had ever seen! This has been stated independently by two other diesel mechanics in the last four years.
7. Replaced old drive shaft and cutlass bearing with a brand new one
8. New Balmar Regulator
9. New spreader lights
10. New temperature gauge, thermostat and engine hour meter.
1. New Mercury 9.9HP outboard engine
2. Installed dual racor fuel filter system with switch over valves
1. Four new AGM house batteries (Deka)
2. Replaced exhaust elbow in engine
3. New Danfoss fridge controller
4. New alternator
1. In 2012 we hauled Anam Cara in Cartagena, Colombia and had a major cosmetic overhaul done with the help of a wonderful crew of excellent boat painters.
2. Complete new gelcoat on hull - made Anam Cara look brand new!
3. New paint topsides and new anti-skid on deck.
4. New Hempel ablative bottom paint.
5. All bright work refinished.
6. All deck hardware removed and rebedded.
7. Regalvanized the anchor chain.
8. Polished fuel and cleaned fuel tank.
9. Rebuilt engine injectors.
10. Fitted new Standard Horizon GX2150 VHF with AIS interfaced to chart plotter – fabulous addition! Makes all our passages much less exciting!
11. New windgenerator blades.
12. Installed ready to go Dynema running back stays.
1. Reupholstered all settee cushions.
2. As our maintenance log will show any interested buyer, we have also diligently maintained Anam Cara, and added to our spares inventory and safety equipment along the way.
3. We have come to appreciate the Tayana 37 as a true blue water cruising boat, and on our travels, having seen many others, believe this to be one of the finest examples there is.
