February 2013 A CRUISING STORY
On Dec 23rd 2012 Bolero departed Gold Coast seaway in 12knt NE and remained on port tack for 365nm, arriving at Lord Howe Island on 26/12/12, total trip time of 66hrs. This was our 2nd fastest trip to the island in the past 8 years, (57hrs …av 6.5knts achieved in 2009). We attached to our mooring at Dawsons Point in the lagoon and enjoyed extraordinary fine weather over the subsequent 4 weeks.
Sailing activities around the island included trips towards Balls Pyramid, Admiralty Islets, and Gower Island. Bolero, having shoal draught, with silicon bronze centreboard, can be manoeuvred into various spots in the lagoon, including
Lovers Bay, where we stayed overnight and barbecued.
On Jan 17th, 2013, we departed LHI and set course for
Elizabeth and Middleton Reefs, having obtained relevant permits from the Marine Office(LHI Board). The remarkable stable weather conditions prevailed, necessitating motor sailing the 92nm to Elizabeth Reef. We generally depart at 1700hrs for this trip, thus ensuring a morning arrival, with optimal visibility etc for entering the lagoon passage. The solitary sandy cay has increased in size substantially since our trip in 2010.
The marine life within the lagoons is breathtaking, with vast schools of bluefish, silver trevally, and kingfish inquisitive enough to follow in the wake of the inflatable, as we conducted serial slow motoring and drift excursions of the crystal clear waters.
Many turtles and sharks present, including tiger sharks to 12ft. Outside the lagoon tuna, mahi mahi, and kingfish plentiful. We moved the 30nm north to Middleton Reef for another 2 day stint, which included excursions around the numerous ship wrecks. The anchorage at Middleton is superior, with a large sandy bight providing access to
further more shallow options deep within the protection of the lagoon.
Bolero feels like home in these unique isolated places…. She has the capability to withstand any conditions served up, and the capacity to provide comfort and safety for prolonged periods of serious sea mongering, particularly with the fuel and fresh water reserves and abundance
of space for 2 persons determined to savour the beauty and wrath the Tasman is notorious for. One of the highlights was cruising over the Derwent Hunter seamount, 120nm from LHI, and witnessing over 1000 dolphins conducting a roundup and banquet of mackerel.
No trip to Lord Howe is the same, but in terms of near perfect unlaboured sailing, this one rates the highest, the only negative being the greater than average fuel consumption due to the often balmy conditions.
Whilst on Lord Howe we met up with Jock and Mona and friends on the big cat, "Slipstream", out of Southport
Yacht Club. Let the pictures tell the real story!
SAILING DATA: Bolero averaged 6 knts for both legs, with periods of motorsailing(Perkins 120hp@1000rpm). 75%
furling yankee and main used day and night on autopilot. Day sailing at LHI we used MPS, mizzen staysail, and mizzen also. Tender: Gemini 3.2m with 8hp Yamaha.
