The name “Force Majeure”, translated as “Unstoppable Force”, is an homage to the sea.  While the name refers to the sea, the boat itself was designed and built with long range blue water ocean travel in mind.  Charts in chart tubes on board speak to this – they document the second owner’s circumnavigation of the globe.

The boats design, well thought out with features such as its clipper bow, provides for the striking image one associates with schooners. Those familiar with Hershoff designs would recognize similarities.

Force Majeure has a smooth motion underway, comes about smartly, and is very comfortable in port or at anchor.  This is a sailing vessel that is geared to travel long distances (200 mile days) in safety and comfort, with a full complement of sails, and motoring capabilities when desired.

With a solid hull, stout masts and rigging, and with a responsive helm and sail options for light air to storm conditions, this schooner is up to the task. A six inch toe rail, rising to 12” at the bow, is a welcome practical feature that adds a good measure of safety.

You will be amazed at the storage capacity, made possible by a very well thought out interior layout. The on deck space is truly impressive on both fore-deck and raised aft deck. The huge amount of space really becomes evident when at dockside or on anchor. The interior space is well designed with the aft stateroom separated and set back from other living space by a hallway. The salon flows well into the kitchen area for a large communal space. The mid cabin has a “bigger than expected” feel that runs throughout the boat.  Forward cabin, forward bath, particularly the shower are all open and spacious.  A “form follows function” design has worked extremely well in this case.

Force Majeure (originally named Wind Rose) was professional built to high standards in a shipyard in Ventura, California. She was built to Samson Maine Design Enterprises Ltd. plans. John Samson, the name behind the Samson group, was considered a foremost expert in ferrocement boatbuilding , and published several books on the subject. The original plans remain onboard.

Ferro boats are noteworthy in several respects; they do not blister like fiberglass boats, do not rust like steel boats, and do not experience dry rot like wooden boats. They have a noticeable characteristic of being less prone to dampness and moisture forming inside. The exterior hull is essentially impervious to sea-water. While disparaged by some based on well publicized misadventures in do it yourself builds, ferrocement has been applied to boat building since the mid 1800’s.  As has been pointed out, you don’t drive your car across fiberglass bridges, and wooden bridges are becoming a thing of the past – if steel reinforced concrete is acceptable for bridges and massive building structures, properly applied it makes sense it works for boats. This is one of those boats where the more you understand the boat, the more you appreciate the people who thought it out, and built it right.

Force Majeure is sail ready, with the majority of what would be seen as larger ticket items in a refitting recently purchased and installed.
