They call these “forever boats”; you buy a boat like this and never need another one again. Whether you’re looking for a capable daysailing yacht that can handle the quick-changing conditions of Lake Michigan, or a long distance ocean cruiser that can take you to virtually any destination in the world, the Carl Alberg designed Cape Dory 36 checks all the marks. They are remarkably well built, with a fit and finish that is both pleasing to the eye and comforting when you’re miles from land. With her narrow beam, low freeboard and large overhangs, she’ll be as graceful idling against a mooring ball than rounding the Horn under triple-reefed main. Her brass fittings are both a homage to yachts of old and a testament to the care than went into her construction.
Verdandi has been lovingly cared for by her owners, and awaits her next adventure at the Larsen Marine Yard in Waukegan IL. Notable updates to her inventory list include a Vesper XB8000 AIS transponder with Wifi, new Group 27 deep cycle batteries last summer (with new wiring) and all teak work redone last fall. She’s also undergone such work as new sinks (2016), new cockpit table and wheel (2015), new cowl vents at the stern (2016), new gaskets on hatches (2016).
The owners are retiring from sailing and would like the yacht to go to a good home, be it Monroe Harbor or the Mediterranean. She’s available for inspection, on the hard, in Waukegan. Offers are encouraged.

Electronics & Navigation
The boat is equipped with a Vesper XB-8000 AIS transponder (2014) with built-in WiFi, NMEA 0183 and 2000 compatible, latest firmware update, and Vesper antennae splitter. There is also an ICOM 504 marine VHF radio that is NMEA 0183 compatible and has DSC. A Garmin NMEA 2000 starter kit is included as well. There is also a Jensen marine stereo in the cabin with two Clarion speakers.
The cockpit mounted instruments are all DMI. There is a Wind Meter (Speed, Direction, Apparent, etc.), Depth Sounder, Speed, Distance and Trip log, all in good working condition.
Battery system was completely updated late summer 2016. Two new West Marine Deep Cycle 90 amp hour, Group 27, lead acid marine batteries were installed. All battery cables were re-terminated at the battery end and the battery storage area was completely re-worked with new battery boxes and retention straps.
There are two marine shore power cords, 1-25 foot and 1-12 foot extension as well as two adapters, a 50-30 amp adapter and a standard 110V adapter.
There are two anchors, a 20lb CQR plow mounted at the bow on the anchor platform with a chain to three strand anchor rode that has length indicators, (there are two of these anchor rodes). There is a second larger Danforth type anchor stored in the aft lazerette. Each rode is stored in it's own locker accessible from the forward V-berth area. Six docklines and four large fenders.
In the cockpit is an Edson steering pedestal and pedestal guard with a folding teak table attached. The steering wheel is teak as well. The table and wheel were installed in 2015. A Ritche 6" steering compass is mounted at the helm.
The cowl vents at the stern of the boat were replaced as were the mounting rings in late summer 2016. At that time new crush proof ventilation hose was run from the cowl vents into the engine compartment.
The dorade boxes on the forward part of the boat were removed, sanded down to bare wood and finished with eleven coats of varnish in 2013. The cowl vents for the dorades were refinished at that time.
Gaskets on both Bowmar hatches were replaced this summer.
There is a complete set of closed cell foam cockpit cushions. There is also a cockpit awning that provides shade and some protection from the rain. It attaches to the boom cradle and backstay.
Included is a practically new bosun's chair.
The engine is a fresh water cooled Perkins 4-108. It starts reliably and is economical to run. Information provided by a previous owner states that the engine burns about 0.75 gallons per hour at 1800 RPM. At that RPM the boat makes between 7.5 and 8.0 MPH in good weather. This translates to a max range of about 430 miles or a little over 55 hours of run time.
The engine oil, oil filters, and fuel filters have been replaced once each year since 2010. The transmission fluid and impellor have been replaced every other year during that time period.
Sails & Rigging
There are three sails on the boat, a fully battened Main, a #1 Genoa, and a staysail. All sails are in fair to good condition. The Genoa is roller furled and has a UV Dacron protective strip on it to shield the sail when it is furled. This strip is in need of replacement. The Main is in good condition as is the Staysail. The staysail is self tending.
There are three Lewmar standard winches mounted on the aluminum, keel stepped mast. One each for the Main, Genoa and Staysail halyards. There are two Lewmar polished bronze, self- tailing winches in the cockpit. On the cabin top there are two Lewmar standard winches, one each for the main sheet and staysail sheet
The port and starboard genoa sheets were replaced in the summer of 2013.
With all three sails in use there is 902 square feet of sail area by actual measurement, 273 in the Main, 483 in the Genoa and 146 in the Staysail.
Cape Dory sailboats were designed by Carl Alberg to be comfortable, stable and safe boats for family cruising. Verdandi is an excellent example of the quality workmanship and construction for which Cape Dory's are famous.
In 2013 when the boat was being prepped for barrier coating and bottom paint, the yard noticed that there was cracking in the forward lower area of the keel. This was completely ground away and repaired, the barrier coat and bottom pain then applied – a 10K investment in the boat. It was important to do this as the lead ballast in the keel is completely encased in the fiberglass of the hull and not bolted on to the hull as in some newer designs.
At that time the port side of the stern rail and swim ladder where also replaced due to some damage caused by another boat.
Over the last two summers all exterior teal has been sanded to bare wood and varnished.
Verdandi is one of those rare older boats which have not been marred by the addition of a lot of "gadgets" nor has it been reconfigured by amateur boatwrights. Her interior and exterior layout are very much the same as she was when she left the Cape Dory factory. She is a timeless classic design, beautiful to look at and a joy to sail.
