Regardless of the hype you read about wing keels the only way to get good windward performance is draft ( be it a deep keel; a lift keel or a centerboard ). The Pearson 40 uses the centerboard method which also gives you another way of trimming the windward helm a sailboat develops as it heels over. With a 4 1/2 foot draft with the board up you can sneak into shallower areas with most 30 footers. Plenty of stability provided by 10,000 #'s of ballast.
