1978 Jarvis Newman 36 Flybridge Downeast
"Rachel B" is a fabulous classic fiberglass vessel which has true downeast roots and styling. Over the years she has received many upgrades including a 350hp Yanmar diesel a 5kw generator and dark green paint.
"Rachel B" was built by Jarvis Newman, the third Maine builder of wooden lobster boats to make the switch to fiberglass construction (1971). Newman's boats were initially built as work boats, and so he realized that if the commercial guys had confidence in his hulls, then so would yachtsmen.
In the early 90s, this Newman made the transformation from work to pleasure with a complete new interior and superstructure. Mac Pettigrew, another lobster boat bulder says "The Newman 36 is the most comfortable small fiberglass boat on the market."
As with all boats, the detail makes the difference and "Rachel B" has not only a practical layout, sheerline that is a knock-out and cabin design that is not only sensible but with a very well appointed interior. With her day head in the saloon, she makes a comfortable stay for 2 couples and an ideal cruising couple's Downeaster. She has green Awlgrip paint, a 350 Yanmar and a 6 KW Northern Lights Generator to compliment her restored interior.

Rachel B is the quintessential Sedan-styled Downeast trawler. With her new paint job throughout her entire exterior (08), she shines like a desert mirage. Cabin entry from the cockpit is gained through a sliding doorway. Once opened and the first step taken inside, her essence of maritime tradition is unmistaken. A day head is to port, across from a wet-locker and a built-in end table with drawers. To starboard is a straight settee that converts to a double across from teak folding chairs and a battened-down, removable dinette table with fold-down leafs. The entire wood interior is classic, varnished mahogany. The cabin sole is Marindeck's synthetic cork with traditional black caulking. The view out from the numerous windows (several side and forward center open) in the saloon is 360 degrees, except where the day head lies. The pop-up helmsman seat for the helm station is to starboard with access to side deck is through a sliding door. Interior includes new curtains. Forward and below lies the galley to port, head with separate shower stall to starboard and v-berths forward. All of it is in the finest style of Hereshoff. Bridge access is via the ladder in the cockpit. On the bridge to port Dorylike dinghy lies mounted to her chaulks and can be launched by a centerline mast and boom. Seats on the bridge swing to face forward or aft.
