The Fisher 34 is the quintessential motor-sailer yacht, much imitated but rarely bettered. Arriving on the market in 1977, they were originally (as in this case) sold by Fairways Marine, but they have always been built by Northshore Yachts in the South of England, UK, where they are still produced. (Northshore are perhaps better known for the highly-regarded Southerly range of yachts).

The Fisher 34 is an excellent coastal cruiser, but also has ocean-going ability with many having sailed further afield. Of particular attraction is the full wheelhouse which makes sailing in the UK weather a completely different experience. While obviously any yacht of this type cannot be expected to sail upwind particularly well, the 34 is often said to have the best sailing ability of the Fisher range, making good progress once the wind is on or aft of the beam.

This yacht, Sea Lion is a 1977 model in quite original, un-molested condition. The wheelhouse is bright and spacious with good visibility even when seated. Down below, an aft cabin to starboard, full size saloon berths and a good-sized forepeak give her genuine 6-berth capacity. The saloon benefits from new upholstery last year. Galley to port is also well-proportioned and has a nearly-new stainless cooker with oven, and cool box with 12v refrigeration.

On deck she has the large stainless pulpit arrangement for anchor stowage which also carries the forestay further forward giving a larger fore-triangle. An inner forestay can also be rigged cutter-style if required. This along with the ketch-rig and roller-furling mainsail on the main mast make sail handling very easy and versatile even when short-handed. Other features on deck include a fitted solar panel on the wheelhouse roof and a 6-man hard-case liferaft. Power is provided by a 60hp Ford Mercraft diesel giving a good balance of power and economy.

In the current ownership since 2000, she was epoxy-treated for osmosis prevention immediately prior to his purchase, and relevant paperwork is still available. As with many boats of this age some on-going cosmetic work will enhance her appearance (some of this is in-hand currently), but all-in-all Sea Lion is a good example of the type, and is well worth checking out by anyone in the market for a quality motor-sailer.

Now lying ashore at Barcaldine for the winter, any inspection is welcomed and viewing can be arranged any time. The area has stunning scenery and many customers like to combine a weekend break with viewing a yacht - why not call now to discuss?
